2800 pounds of salad? from 4 companies and 4 retail chains? What's that, a bag per store? Gotta be something in error in the story.
And throwing in the California Hepatitis A outbreak of last year? That came from the homeless not washing their hands and not properly disposing of their waste products. Had absolutely nothing to do with food products.
Who writes this stuff?
-
Those Fake News guys? Actually, it would work out to 11.42 bags per store... I'm still leery after being bunghole bob for a week after Fareway's chicken salad debacle. :doah:
Gotta have the hype in all facets of life, though....Go get 'em, Del. :happy1:

well, there are 474 trader joes, and 479 whole foods, and a whole lot more wally worlds. So, one salad per store?

Honey Smacks returns to shelves with new recipe after recall
October 23, 2018
NATIONAL NEWS FROM THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. (AP) — Kellogg’s Honey Smacks is returning to shelves following a voluntarily recall after salmonella infected 100 people in 33 states.
The company announced on Monday the cereal will return next month in limited quantities with “a simpler, updated recipe.” The company says production was moved to a “trusted and tested Kellogg-owned facility that has been reliably producing cereal for decades.”
The recall was issued in June. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said at least 30 of the people infected in the outbreak were hospitalized.
Salmonella usually causes fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

Ya really Rebs. SO it wasn't made in a trusted and tested facility previous to this issue.....

"McCain Foods USA’s last embarrassing recall moments came in April 2017 when it took certain Roundy’s, Harris Teeter, and Southern Style hash browns off the market for containing “extraneous golf ball materials.” It seems golf balls were “inadvertently harvested” with the potatoes used to make the hash browns. The result was a choking hazard that gave McCain more unwanted publicity than most recalls do."

I could see how it could happen. We used to get hay in big squares that came from a field by the golf course. Every year we'd find a few golf balls in the bales. With sheep it was no big deal but with cattle it could be more problematic. In spuds it would likely be tough to get them all sorted out.
-
When I worked at the butcher shop when I was a pupster, we'd grind 40 lb frozen blocks of trim to add to the ground beef to get it to specified fat percentage. Often found nails, chunks of wire....and bullets in the meat. Ya, bullet slugs..!

That's actually the reason I've never bought ground poultry. Too much chance of things like that with the process. Learned and saw that while I worked at the butcher shop many moons ago.

I dunno....I get their Email news and newsletter, and they honestly have more recalls than anyone I've ever heard of. I was just there last week; I love the place. Have good snackie things. I think they get a lot of their stuff from funky little providers...like Carlotta's Cabbage Farm and Juan's Eggplant Emporium.....

I know they carry a lot of the same type stuff but not sure  if they have the same brands at the same time or not as I've never been in a Trader Joe's. The only 1 I get near in my travels is the 1 by Reb & Del. The Aldi's (4) that I we go to seem to vary a little from store to store, I suppose according to what sells in that area.
-
Never been to an Aldi but am curious to see one. Been to Trader Joes once and it was fun.

They have such great cheeses. Their creamy Danish Havarti is heaven. Gotta get the jars of Pumpkin Butter in the fall....and I picked up a jar of their smoky peach salsa and blue corn chips last week, and some frozen chicken enchilada verde's and beefsteak burrito's, along with a jar of their green chile verde sauce........ahh num num num.....

So far as I can tell, Aldis and Trader Joes are independent chains, regardless of any family connection. We have two Aldis and a TJ here in Rochester.
The TJ has an attached liquor store (MN stupid law) and is well known for their reasonable wine prices, including the "two buck chuck" which in MN is "three buck chuck" line of Charles Shaw wine that is very drinkable and only costs like 3 bucks a bottle.
Personally not a big fan of Aldis but like TJ

There's one in Owatonna that I should check out sometime. Produce is one of the areas the local store struggles on due to limited space. That and all the Norwegians and Swedes refuse to eat anything remotely vegetative!

Officials: Multistate hepatitis A cases traced to berries
November 20, 2019
LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Nebraska and federal health officials say a hepatitis A outbreak that includes Nebraska, Indiana and Wisconsin has been traced to blackberries sold in Fresh Thyme grocery stores.
The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services says in a news release Wednesday that the outbreak began several week ago in Nebraska. The department says it, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are investigating and have confirmed 11 cases. Six of those cases are in Nebraska.
A phone message left Wednesday with Illinois-based Fresh Thyme was not returned.
The FDA is urging consumers in Nebraska, Indiana, Wisconsin and eight other states not to eat any fresh blackberries bought from Fresh Thyme between Sept. 9 and Sept. 30. The other states are Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Minnesota, Ohio and Pennsylvania.
Hepatitis A is a virus that infects the liver and can cause mild, flu-like symptoms for several weeks.

Ya, that's what it said and was all about, Del.....
because the lettuce may be contaminated with a strain of E. coli.
-
Barry, you ever thought of indoor pot lettuce growing?
-
I tried it last winter in two 4" diameter pots. Kept forgetting to water them. I need an actual nice big box in the basement with grow lights to make it work. Was fun as heck and easy to grow once it got started outside last summer. Even got into green smoothies just to use it up. They were good too.

Maybe I shoulda said lettuce IN a pot... :rotflmao:

US officials: Don’t eat romaine grown in Salinas, California
November 22, 2019
NATIONAL NEWS FROM THE ASSOCIATED PRESS, TOP STORIES
NEW YORK (AP) — U.S. health officials are telling people to avoid romaine lettuce grown in Salinas, California, as they investigate a food poisoning outbreak.
They also say not to eat the leafy green if the label doesn’t say where it was grown.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is investigating an E. coli outbreak that has sickened 40 people in more than a dozen states.
Romaine has been tied to repeated food poisoning outbreaks, including one right before Thanksgiving last year. It’s not clear exactly why romaine keeps sickening people, but food safety experts note the difficulty of eliminating risk for produce grown in open fields and eaten raw.
The FDA says its inquiry has led investigators to farms in Salinas and that they are looking for the contamination source.
###
Cuz Juan and Carlos know romaine leaves make good toilet paper. Beware of Salinas. On lettuce leave they wipe their P______.
-
:rotflmao: :rotflmao:
-
It sure seems like a water thing to me. Or maybe fertilizer.
-
Wonder if they ever check those irrigation pipes inside that track across the fields?
-
Your reference to people and human waste may not be too far off Rebs. What else is discharged into these canals even miles away? After dark!
-
Well, someone out in the fields all day has to take a whiz...or a poop...what do ya think they're gonna do? Then it rains that nite...
Contamination can occur on the farm when birds make frequent flights overhead or low-lying fields flood with contaminated water. E. coli can also be spread by farmworkers who don’t wash their hands or via farm equipment that has manure on it.
Once the greens are picked, they move to a packaging plant, where they are exposed to more workers and more equipment. Product from multiple farms is often bagged in the same facility, which further increases the odds of cross-contamination.
While packers frequently rinse lettuce with a chlorine wash to kill pathogens, studies have shown those sprays are only partly effective. The same is true of washing fruits and vegetables at home, Tauxe said, because pathogens “cling” to the surface of produce and can enter the inside of a leaf or fruit after they have been cut open.
There’s no “kill step” that destroys pathogens for foods eaten raw, as there is for a well-done burger or a glass of pasteurized milk.
“This is why it’s so important that the people who grow food do everything they can to minimize contamination,” said Sandra Eskin, who heads the food-safety project at the Pew Charitable Trusts. “Lettuce grows in the dirt. It’s eaten raw. There’s no opportunity to cook it to kill bacteria.”
It can be difficult to identify an exact source of the E. coli, a bacteria transmitted from human or animal feces. Because of the time it takes for symptoms to show and testing to be conducted, weeks can pass between when a person is exposed and when the case is reported. By then, the contaminated lettuce may be long gone.
-
I lived in Salinas lo many years ago. Even then, porta potties were supplied for the workers in the field. The irrigation was in trenches in between the rows.
My guess is that the contamination occurred during the harvest, since the produce is washed and packed in the field.
But I really don't have any way of telling and neither do you guys. This is a big operation. Last year it was Yuma Az. This year Salinas. These incidents happen all the time. Maybe the Chinese had the right idea. Everything got cooked or seared before being eaten.

This gets into a discussion about the Orientals' centuries old practice of using human excrement as fertilizer. Another potion for disaster so might have something to do with their cooking everything. Even here where municipal sewage is injected, the canning companies won't allow it on fields for direct human consumption, things like peas, string beans and sweet corn. Potential heavy metal contamination becomes part of the equation here as well. Use of livestock manure seems to be OK altho few do it as it isn't the best on sweet corn for consistently supplying nitrogen and unnecessary to use that much N,P, and K on peas. Better utilized after peas for regular dent corn.

To a large extent that is true. We're all well aware of recalls due to fecal contamination in hamburger coming from cattle. And as sheep producers we're not big cat fans as they can carry toxoplasmosis, a neat little organism that is shed as oocytes in their feces. Not only can it cause abortions in sheep, pregnant women are also advised to stay away from cat litter boxes. Salmonella and coccidiosis can get into these turkey barns via sparrow and starling feces. According to a dear late friend who worked for Jerome's & Jenny O, they were constantly battling to keep them out, especially in the older barns. Hog manure too has it's little issues. Some of the diseases (remember swine flu?) cross over from swine to humans and with most of the swine production being confinement with pits under the buildings full of swine sewage, it's another potential human health issue. When we've had clients bring us liquid swine manure samples to send in for analysis, I am always very cautious. More than once after handling the samples I've come down with some sort of respiratory ailment. Trying to get people to freeze the stuff and double bag it before bringing it in helps but some catch on pretty slowly as to why that's important. Another thing that was common several years back was to have showers and bathrooms in the hog buildings that emptied directly into the pit with the swine manure. That got the kibosh pretty quickly once word got out. Not a real brilliant idea.
It's pretty easy to see how a micro organism can spread too once it gets onto plants within a field. I still remember plant path class. One of the labs involved a demonstration of splash dissemination. A 5 gal. bucket of water was placed in the middle of a moisture sensitive paper with a radius of about 10'. The guy climbed up on a stepladder and from about 8' up dribbled about 100 ml of water slowly out of a beaker into the bucket. Amazing how many droplets could be found on the outer edges of the paper. Just think about what would happen with subsequent rainfall events in a field.

Damn, looking back a few years I can't imagine why I'm still alive. Back on the farm we had several shallow, muddy ponds. This is where the cows went to drink poop and pee. In summer along with the floating cow pies, they were often covered in green/blue algae. I can't even imagine all the contaminants and bugs that were in that water. Yes, we did use it for our pool. Swimming, rafting and no doubt swallowing a good amount of it. Never once gave a thought about e coli, Naegleria fowleri, blue-green algae poisoning, Nile Virus, or any of todays identified issues with pond water. I guess it was all the un pasteurized milk straight from the cows that help prevent my slow agonizing death from drinking contaminated pond water.

I hear you delcecchi. My grandfather died in 1956 from blood poisoning after cutting himself while building my dads barn and then tying a dirty rag on his leg to cover the wound. As odd as it may sound, his father (my great grandfather) suffered a similar fate in 1905 when he cut himself on the leg with a draw knife and subsequently died from blood poising.
St. Peter's Bote, Nov.30, 1905
+Heinrich Gerwing
But, alas! While adjusting some small thing, he cut himself in his right leg with his pocketknife. When it bled profusely he tied a blue piece of cloth around it. He paid no attention to the wound at first and kept on working. But by evening his leg pained him very much. He got blood poison from the blue cloth. For three weeks he stayed in his house, his leg getting worse day by day. Even then he did not want to consult a doctor. Finally he gave in and had someone bring out Dr. Neely. Dr. Neely has a hospital in Humboldt to which Gerwing was taken. He lay in the hospital for a week at which time Re. P. Rudolph gave him the Holy Sacraments. After that he was alive for only a day and gradually passed into eternity. Only his wife was there when he died, his sons arriving two hours too late.

Ya I don't get it Reb. These recalls are always after the fact. Folks already are eating the stuff or in the freezer. They have federal inspectors in every plant. One thing about recalls, the stores hear about it right away before the media does and it gets pulled on the spot. So you should not ever see a recalled item in any store. good luck.

well to answer both questions on one shot, further processing plants, no slaughter, has inspection on a random basis.. in other words that person covers 3 or 4 plants.. and they can be 50 miles apart to boot... I have been close to 100 miles between plants at times, before I retired.. Rh the state inspects the stores, how often do you see them?? that is how how it works.. FDA come around 1 or 2 times a year..

Well, that makes sense! :happy1:

Mike the stores here like Cub and Walmart for example have a company that's called Ecolab that sends inspectors once a month but they have nothing to do with food production. They just inspect the sanitary conditions in the stores. The state inspectors may come a couple of times a year and they also have nothing to do with production. Way back in the days when I worked in a meat market they sold retail and some wholesale. There we had a federal inspector who was there often. Had to have a little desk space for the guy. He only checked mainly for sanitary conditions and labeling of products. When I first started I worked at Ambassador Sausage Co. in MPLS. They had a federal inspector also who was there often. He checked production, packaging, and sanitary conditions. So as far as this recall, the inspections should have taken place at the plant where this product was made. They also took samples of ground beef to test for the correct lean/fat ratio. Don't really know if the inspectors can catch things like small rocks in random boxes of the product on a production line. Probably like hitting the lottery. Seems like it's the consumers who complain and then action is taken. good luck.

you are right on over all Rh... yes Ecolab is not food related, per say.. and yes something like that would be real hard to find... so that is why all plants work with HACCP plans.. hazard analysis critical control points... so in other words a paper trail... and also SSOP, standard sanitation operating procedures... sure glad I'm not chasing that around any more either!1

Didn't know you were a inspector. I got to know some of them over the years , especially Ecolab. Nice guys and so where the feds. Funny how some of them always picked on one item, and with the Ecolab guy it's always the saw which he goes over well but with the rest of the room he gives it a good visual scan LOL. We go his number down well LOL. We had one fed inspector just look at our brine containers for some reason so that was cared for good. I did most of the cleaning back then since I was the rookie. good luck.

Ecolab is pretty much a fixture at Mayo.....a ton of areas/cafeterias/food rooms to inspect. Saw those guys daily.
