The first one I ever got was a zebco..... caught many a fish with those things.
I had a pocket fisherman, that was a piece of junk.

Beautiful! :happy1: Don't forget the Horrocks- Ibbotson Valiant spincast, or the Shakespeare wonder reel with star drag! Both work great! From 1960-1963.

Mr Tom apparently meant ''Little guy", and crazy is the norm.

Zebco's were the cool thing when we were kids.
-
Plus, they came with like 200 lb test on 'em, ya could pull that limb right off the tree before ya lost yer hook and red & white bobber to it. :rotflmao:

Hey that's right. Used that same line for the life of the reel.

Nah, he has always been known as the "BIG" guy to me. But, I can relate to the crazy part.

Zebco was it for me in my younger days but I remember when my grandpa got 1 of the Shakespeares with the star drag that Reb was talking about when he retired from Hormel, man was that a nice unit. Not so sure it's not still out in the fish cleanin house

had many Zebco reels, so easy to work with and keep going!!!
-
Yup. Still have a 600 & the wife's 202 someplace. My Dad had both a 66 and a 33 like in the ad. The 66 was missing the eyelet on the front cover so it cut the line frequently.
-
cripes you guys are old suckers!!!!!!!!!!!! :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

Still have the never used 33's, and a couple of 202's laying around, in addition the that new one on the matched rod in the case. Two piece rod that breaks down and goes in a white vinyl zippered case. Didja know Zebco stands for the "Zero Hour Bomb Co., out of Tulsa? Brunswick took them over in the 70's, I think. Just didn't fudge 'em up as bad as the Harley's they took over when they were AMF/Brunswick. I used to repair a lot of 'em when I was doing reel repair. Usually the biggest prob was all the sand in 'em and lack of oiling.

Dad's 33 is mounted on an old GEP steel rod. Mom bought the rod for him as a surprise birthday present. My oldest brother told Dad when he grew up, he wanted a rod just like the one Mom was getting him for his birthday. Surprise! :bonk:

Everyone in my family uses open face spin cast except my mom. I taught my kids to retrieve left-handed from the very beginning.
I was always told to keep an old Johnson closed face ready with fresh line in case my mom ever wanted to go out again.
She is still around, but her fishing days are probably past. But I still keep that reel ready - just in case.
-
Yer talking "spinning" reel, right Steve? No, I 'm not picking at ya....there's spinning, spincasts, and baitcasters....also with the "schooley" type called everything from open spinning to spool spinning to open reel to inline reel, some guys are even tagging them "Black Betty's" after the fish13 hot reel four of five years ago. I have one, and it;s just a high end standard Schooley, IMO. Great for short jigging. :doofus:

I stand corrected. Ma used a spincast; everyone else used spinning...

Ah! The good ol' Mitchell 300 spinning staple! Tank of the spinning reels. :happy1:
Who didn't grow up using those? Spinning reels are all I've ever really used. My buddy can't use one without a tangles mono ball every time...how in the he** he manages that, I have NO clue. That's why he uses bait casters...and he can cast and put it down on a dime. Never seen a backlash on his when doing that. Now me with one of those.....looks like the main ingredient for "birds nest" soup...
