Lest we forget, 1991.  The only year in over 40 years we could not get in by truck.  Had to go in with snowmobiles.

We have had some years with too much snow on opener.  Never did well when that happens.  I like a inch or so but no more.  good luck.

Snow can be good.  Two years ago we had snow on the 2017 opener. Turned out to be a pretty good season.

View from my stand shortly after the shot.

This one loved making tracks in the snow.  Up to a point.

Hey there's my old Rupp!   :happy1:

1991, was that the great Halloween blizzard?  My old jacked up Harvester Scout got us back in the woods that week.

I see someone brought their Chapparal up to their camp by Waskish on our way to Bemidji the other day.  Haven't seen one of them for years.

Yes, that's a Rupp 440 narrow track.  Went really fast on trails and hard pack but would get stuck in soft snow.  Loud as hell with the carb and motor between your legs.  I also had an early 70's Yamaha 440 wide track.  Funny how I remember the details of this hunt. The last Saturday on the 91 season my two sons and I went in with both sleds and a toboggan hauling in all our supplies.  I shot a big doe about a quarter mile out across a swamp.  The Yamaha wouldn't start (remember those days) so it took the Rupp knowing full well that I would get stuck if I stopped forward motion in the swamp.  When I arrived at the kill site I road past the deer and made several large loops to make a packed trail.  I was able to get going and made it back to "camp".  Camp was an old 4x4 fish house.  I knew getting out was going to be a challenge so picture this.  First in line was our one running machine the Rupp.  Tied to that was the non running Yamaha, and trailing behind that was the toboggan loaded with the deer and all our gear.  We positioned this caravan on a down hill slope to help us get moving.  Now think of a 4 man bob sled start.  My youngest son on one side and me on the other side of the Running Rupp, and my older son beside the dead Yamaha. With the Rupp throwing snow at full throttle and all of use pushing the train started to move.  Soon we reached a speed where we had to jump on and hang on.  The Rupp barked like hell and I hoped nothing bad happened behind me because I wasn't going to slow down.  It was a wild mile and a half ride out to the road but we make it without losing anybody or any equipment.  AHHH, the good old days.

Back in the 80s and 90s I remember there was snow - at least a trace - for the first weekend of deer season up north every year except one or two.  Recently it has been the opposite.

There was another season - after '91, I think - when there was lots of snow and bitter cold - zero degree temps the first weekend of November.  No one was in a hurry to get to their stands 30 minutes before sun up.  Anyone remember when this was?

I remember about then there was a season like that.  Was so much snow and then got so cold that they ended up allowing another weekend of hunting.  That was in SW MN.  I think it was 11" of snow or something like that.  We were so tired from walking through drifts of snow..  I'm thinking late 80's.

Wow, Deadeye that was quite a story.  I think the last time we had some deeper snow was two years ago up where we hunt north of Duluth.  I really dont like a lot of snow for deer hunting.  One or two inches is fine for tracking.  Deer don't seem to move at all after a fresh snow fall.  good luck.
