Title: 2020 Twins
Post by: Gunner55 on January 01/15/20, 09:18:45 AM
Big FA signing for the Twins, Josh Donaldson former Braves 3rd basemen. Contract is for 4yrs/$84 mil with a $8 mil buyout, it looks like Sano will be playin a lot more 1st this season.

Defense improves.  Offense improves.
Then, if they are in contention before the trade deadline they can look at the pitching market again.

A lot of $ for a guy who is 34 & missed a lot of time 2 of the last 3 seasons. All the good FA pitchers signed deals closer $200+ mil / 30 + mil a year.

Good to see the trade for more pitching especially with Pineda suspension 'til mid - May & the other 2 they signed coming off injuries, out to start the season too. Price too high? maybe but Maeda contract is pretty team friendly, $3 mil/per through 2023. :happy1:

It's tough to see us give up Graterol for Maeda. I know Kenta Maeda is more proven, but Graterol throw 100 mph and is 21 yrs old. We may regret this for years to come but probably not for this year.

Never know on guys that throw that hard. It seems that if the mechanics aren't perfect & / or they are used too much that they need rotator cuff or Tommy John surgery at least once before they learn to really pitch. :pouty:

I see where the trade is on hold now after the Red Sox got a look at Graterol medical records. Seems he had Tommy John surgery when he was 16 along with him missing 2 months last season with shoulder issues & they didn't know it.  :doah:  :doofus: Guess  they really wanted to unload that nearly $60 mil in Betts & Price's contracts  pretty bad. :tut:
Title: Re: 2020 Twins

If they're askin for someone else in the deal in addition to Graterol because of his medical history, I hope they tell them to pack sand.  Then we'll find out how bad the Sox want to get rid of Betts and Price $$$s.

Just look how much the Timber Woofies were willing to give up to get rid of Wiggins.

Minnesota sports fans have a history of frustration, but how come our teams always find a way to "Buy High and Sell Low?"  :doah:

Yeah, Wiggins hasn't done c**p since he got that new contract. Bet they've been pedaling him around for a year, maybe 2, but the $ was too high without some good draft picks to go with.

You hit the nail on the head, Steve-o, as the Twins backed out of the deal when they started askin for another top prospect. :happy1:  Heard too that their front office was gettin so much heat from the fans for tradin Betts that they're just using the medical staff to cover their :moon:. :tut:

Wish I had FSN to see how they cover the game with no fans.

And its hard to imagine what a radio broadcast will be like without the din of the crowd noise in the background or the eruption of excitement when the Twinkies do something good.  I guess I'll have to tune in to see how it goes.

I have never been a big baseball fan.  I have a buddy who is and my 2 brothers are too.  SO this year my brothers and I did what we do for the Vikes.  We each pick how many wins.  Brother 1 says 41, Brother 2 says 37, I said 34.  This is for a bottle of brandy.  Maybe it will instill more Twins baseball enjoyment in me.

They lost 4-3, Bailey the new starter didn't look sharp & neither was Donaldson, our big FA signing. I wanted to see some of the new guys so......................................it was pretty strange with the stands being empty.

Think I still have my YouTube TV subscription so may have to tune it in. Afraid like some of you tho it's going to be hard for me to get up for games with no fans in the stands. Maybe they'll come up with something like a laugh track as they have on TV shows.

I was right, Dotch, heard 'em say before the NYY/WSH game last night that they ARE pipin in crowd noise. At the LAD/SF game last night they had cardboard cutouts of the fans in the stands too.  :doah:

A little recap for those who didn't/couldn't tune in. Kepler homered on the 1st pitch & again to lead off the 2nd inning. They had 3 others with key hits with 2 out for most of the rest of the RBI's. Berrios wasn't sharp but the bullpen was for a 10-5 win. Today's game is scheduled for 1:10

I haven't looked at the box scores from around the league.  Are other teams scoring at a high rate too?  The guys talking during the first game were wondering if hitting was further along than pitching this season.  If so, that will bode well for the Twins and their ability to outscore opponents when they need to.

Your right Dotch as I heard on the drive home that they have 4 more test positive so that means they have 7 total & that they've cancelled their home opener tonight because of it. That will put some stress on the already short condensed season & could easily spell doom for MLB.  Kind of waiting/thinking that same shoe might be about ready drop on the NBA as well. Saw the game last nite on youtubetv. Don't ask me how I remembered any of the hocus pocus to get on there again. Nice to see them win the game. Didn't see the national anthem kneeling but the Black Lives Matter & George Floyd stuff chaps my hide. It's turning me off as a fan. Fortunately they also still did God Bless America. I made damn sure I watched until the 7th to see if they would. If they hadn't I would've been done watching for the season. As it is the game itself was just sorta blah. Finding it difficult to get fired up about tuning in another one.

Twins offense is ranked #3 in all of baseball. Barring injuries and Covid they will knock the ball around pretty good. As the bullpens get worn out we should see some real softball scores. Hitters might be a tad bit ahead of the pitchers at this point but we are in the heat of the summer when the ball always flys anyway. That and they likely are still using the juiced balls of last year.

Twins are off to a good start.

:happy1: I'll say, before the start of last nights game they were nearly averaging a run/inning. Tonights game against Cleveland is on FOX @ 6. For those who no longer get FSN ;) & haven't got a look at the Twins yet. You can tonight if you wish. Berrios gets the ball & he wasn't sharp in his 1st start.

Another lead off HR by Kepler & a 2 R double by Rosario in the 1st were pretty much the difference along with some good work by Dobnak & the bullpen last night. Avilia did have a HR in the 2nd too. :happy1:

Solo HR's by Sano(2) & Rosario accounted for all their runs & a stellar outing by Maeda who went 6 innings, giving up only 1 hit while havin 6 K's led to the 3-0 win last night.

They were behind 4-0 last I looked, bottom of the 5th, last night only to come back & tie it in the 6th. Cruz had the key hit(2B) in the top of the 9th to drive in Polanco for the winning run. Cruz & Kepler had 6 of their 7 hits. Thorpe opened the game & struggled but the bullpen was once again up to the job.

The game was a absolute gift from the putrid Pirates. 5 walks and either a wild pitch or passed ball along with a hit scored the 4 runs to tie it.

Twinks were ready to lay down until the Pirates refused to let them.   :surrender:

I'm new here so maybe I don't know the ropes here. If thats the case I'll get the boot soon enough.

All i've seen you do is piss & moan about rioters, BLM, athletes ect.
I have no problem with anybody (including you) voicing a opinion. However when you don't allow the same people you rail about to have a opinion I find that a joke. Your stating you are done with pro sports because the "athletes" disrespect the flag or country or your ideals or whatever I find laughable. 1 game, whats one game? Do they work for you? Believe it's Bert's last telecast tonite on a Twin's game. Sad day. Watched him pitch when I was a youngster in 1970 at the Met. The VFW treated all of us who worked as crossing guards during the school year. Have always appreciated his humor and knowledge of the game.  :happy1:

Did ya know Bert gave up 50 hr's one season?  ;)

Always liked the guy as a player and the early years of his broadcasting career. The stories and beliefs are getting old and I'm ready for a change. He can ride off into the sunset and enjoy all that comes with being a HOFer.

My faves were alwasy Herb Carneal and Jim Kaat.

I could listen to Herb read the phone book and Jim was one of the best story tellers in baseball.

The streak ended at 5 yday as a result of the bullpen having a terrible day, the 1st in a long time. The offense woke up though as everyone was smackin the ball around.

Maeda pitched a great game Friday, got some help(HR's) from Buxton & Jeffers Friday night. The ball was flying out of the park last night as they blasted 5 over the fence. :happy1: Would be nice to get today's game & sweep 'em. Start 4 games with the CWS on Monday & that should go a long ways towards determining who win the AL Central.

This was the first season that my wife and I became Twins fans and watched most of the games.  I can't imagine a 160 game season.  That is a lot of games.  I was surprised how many errors occurred.  And I was also surprised how far out of the zone some of the strikes were.  But it was fun and we will watch next year too.  I heard them say that the strike zone will be a lazer computer thing within five years so it is more accurate.  Purists won't like this but wouldn't bother me I don't think.  Oh well now the Vikes, Gophers, Bison will be the focus.    And South Dakota State in Brookings too.  Have had a few family members go there.

The playoff format changed, but the nightmare continues for Minnesota Twins fans.

After being swept in their 2020 wild-card series by the Houston Astros, the Twins extended their MLB playoffs losing streak to a record 18 games. Minnesota has been outscored 107-48 in that stretch.

Must be a subliminal message in that attachment you posted Grandpa Tom. When I first read it I thought it said "Have a Crown, Keep Calm & Wait For the Next Year!!!"

It was a disappointing end to the season although with the crappy TV coverage, BLM nonsense, goofed up season and oddball playoff format I hadn't invested an awful lot of emotional capital. They certainly had the pieces in place. A few too many injuries and that's the way the cookie crumbles.

The good news is the Indians and White Sux also are out. The crappy division put 3 teams into the play-offs and all are done.   :happy1:

Yankees & Tampa Bay will be a great series. They don't like each other much and neither Boone or Cash are beyond having their team play some old country hardball.

I wish ol' #14 - Kent Hrbek - could have hung on a bit longer.  He retired at the age of 34.

You wonder what he could have done if he would have had access to modern training and diet methods and theories.

Still, I ain't ripping the guy.  He gave the Twins and their fans 14 outstanding years.

I've still been watching most of the time but Kirilloff's injury is nothing new as he had the same thing in '19. He's having surgery in the next couple days. Where Arraez slipped & hurt his knee in the outfield must be a bad spot on that field as Larnach slipped last night in the same spot, luckily he didn't get hurt. Lots of injuries everywhere this year & most are blaming the CV-19 shortened 2020 season along with the changes required to Spring Training this year for much of it. Been hard to watch sometimes :pouty:, the pitching especially, but they're starting to score some runs now. Getting swept by Detroit really hurt.

I'm not a doctor, but ...

It seems all sports have been dealing with more and more injuries.  Athletes try to blame changes to team practice (too many preseason games for football athletes vs. not enough spring training for baseball) and game schedules (too many back-to-back games) for much of this.  However, to me, these amount to no more than labor/management disputes.  Today's athletes seem to prefer less organized practice and easier travel schedules.

Athletes in decades past had tougher practices, similar travel schedules, less accommodating accommodations, and more playing time with fewer days off - AND seemingly had fewer injuries.  (Either that or they played hurt.)

But if there actually are more injuries today, it ain't because of the practice and game schedules.  I think it simply because athletes are bigger, stronger, faster.  There are more frequent and bigger bursts of speed and power, which result strains, tears, or bigger collisions that cause more injury.

Done deal. And I don't care anymore. This from a former fan who started watching the Twins from his high chair back in the early 60's. Can't get the games live. Watch some of the replays at noon if having lunch at The Willows. Not missing anything apparently. SSDD. Invested my emotional & spare time capital elsewhere.

Your last paragraph hit it. In addition some of these guys are juicing still and it breaks things down. You also have over training. These guys are specializing in their sport from the time they are in high school. These joints and muscles never have time to heal & rest. Blame it on the money.

:tut: They need pitching bad & 6 of the 7 players they got at the trade deadline were pitchers, the other was a guy they wanted to draft but Toronto took him 1st. Not much pitching in the minors either as any that are close to ready have played in the majors this season. Seen 1 report where they thought that the 2 guys they got for Cruz from TB could both pitch for the Twins next year already. Berrios had 1 year left on his deal & they've been trying to sign him to an extension all season but the 2 sides were not even close on the terms. Besides Berrios had come out & said recently he wanted to try free agency. So he was gone anyway, with nothin in return.  :bs:
