Title: retiring?????????????????
Post by: glenn57 on June 06/17/20, 11:47:36 AM
so, this morning in the good morning thread i mentioned i was in a pissy mood, well things havent changed!!!!!!

this COVID  thing really hit our Union hard, finanacially. i deal with shops so it hasnt affected those members much. our field construction has been devistated. most if not all field work was pushed out, delayed or cancelled. the outlook for next year is also really bleek.

with that being said yesterday i was having a conversation with the boss man. he then asked when i was planning on retiring, so i told him my plan. the plan was to retire sometime later on in 2021, hadnt decided if it was before hunting season, or before ice fishing or work through the uglier part of winter and retire spring of 22.

after a bit i got this feeling, so a flat out asked when he wanted me to retire. he said this september after my 63rd birthday. he wanted me to get an agreement up in grand rapids after this 6 year battle up there. this felt like i got hit between the eyes with a baseball bat, and i really got this i dont give a f___ attitude now.  eesententially he is looking to eliminate the shop rep position.

NOW, i totally get the why part and why financially why, the international is watching very, very closely all local lodge finances and actually consolidated a local in the same town the International HDQTRS are.

long story short......... this reality is hard to wrap my head around, as its not under my terms, or was in my longer term game plan!!!!!!!

ok i'll quit whining!!!!!!

I had planned on retiring when I hit 65.  You may remember my talking about it.  Well at work we got to talking about it one day.  I checked out my pensions and all was looking good.  It turned out that I was able to retire at 64 and go on my wife's insurance for a year.  I wasn't going to gain that much per month if I worked a year or two longer.  SO when I looked at my vacation time left I was done 6 weeks after we started looking into it.  Actually kind of a scary and quick change in my life.  Haven't regretted it for a minute.  With the Covid thing I have gotten a little lonely at times but can deal with it.  It is a big change not having the people to talk to each day like you do at work.  My wife still works so I am at home unsupervised every day.  SO it is all a matter of how the math works out for you.

the one thing he mentioned about maybe hiring me occasionally as a consultant.............but at this point in my life, i'm not sure i am willing to do that??

there isnt even a close comparision between the shop enviroment and field. its like comparing an elephant to an ant!!!!! i've poured my heart an soul into this job for over 13 years............it suxs big time.

well currently my thought process is if they think they can do without a shop rep..........let them figure it out.

Wow...IAM just reading this.  So sad in so many ways.  Luckily, I was ready to go and got a nice buyout.  You have worked hard doing you representation and this is a big let down.
Now, you have to look at it in several ways.  As disheartening as it is, you did your best and should be proud of that.
It is very emotional for sure and the consulting thing can ease the let down.  IAM sort of still active with our retirees club and helping the DL flight attendants organize, and that helps some.
Now, another way to look at it, it gives you more time to harass the members here and also to drown some crawlers or lose some crank baits to the big ones.
No more planning around work during deer season or any other season.
I hope you make the right decision.  Sad as it may appear, you will come to enjoy not going in or having to set the alarm anymore.
Good luck Big Guy.  IAM wishing you the best for sure.

My union brothers and sisters use that a lot in conversations on face book.  I know many retirees and we all share the same emotions.  Some days we miss the job, but most of the time find better things to do and move on.
You have some great friends here too and fishing buddies that will help you when things seem to be getting tough.
Hey, join face book......LOL!!!!!  Maybe you can help the Dumpsters campaign.   :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

glenn57, sorry to hear of your predicament.  Sounds like you do have a few options.  I assume you will check if it's better to be laid off than quit to retire.  If your laid off you may be able to collect unemployment for a year or so.  Also, being retired isn't all that bad.  :rotflmao:
I hear you about feeling like they just want you gone and don't give a rats patoot about what you have done but like Grandpa Tom said, its a common emotion.  I highly recommend retirement.  So far for me it's been great.  After 11.5 years I still haven't run out of things to do.  Of course now it takes me longer to do somethings that it did years ago.   :rotflmao:

Post by: glenn57 on June 06/17/20, 06:39:10 PM
Thanks deadeye. I don't believe a layoff is an option. I either retire of one day he says I'm done. I do have the option of going back to the shop I came from. I retain senority rights there. I guess if he tells me I'm done it could be a layoff. I,d get the max UI Of 740.00 but not an option in my mind when I'm eligible for full pension.

I don't think I will have some much of an issue bring retired, it's just not on my terms is the hard part. I had an agenda from now till the day I retired

Well :pouty: I guess my first 3 months of retirement is already planned. my wife said your going up north for the first 3 months. I can only come home for a few days every now and then to go laundry and reload food. :doah:  I don't understand  I wasn't even getting under her skin.... Yet. :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

I told her to don't be threatening me with a good time. :super smiley: :laughroll: :laughroll:

glenn,
I did not retire on my terms either.  However, it did come to terms with retirement.  :rotflmao:
Actually I worked for the same company for 36 years and then one day I open my email (I was working from home before it became as popular as it is today) and there's an email from my boss (she lived in a different state).  To my surprise, the email was to notify me that I was laid off and that I need to send in my PC to the attached address.  From then on I was on my own regarding how to exit the company and start training for another job.  I never got around to the training part. LOL.

I got blindsided by a RA, resource action, even though I was planning on retiring soon it still sort of stung for a day or two.   But just remember that old saying about the hand in the bucket of water...

IAM.   We used to play ball in their parking lot on Cromwell Ave in St Paul.   International Association of Machinists.    It was great.  Just down the block and there were never any cars in the nice blacktop parking lot except an occasional evening when there was a meeting.
Now it is Highway 280 ...

Best of luck Glenn. You seem like someone with a lot of interests so I bet retirement will suit you well.I call my present job my "retirement job" since I only work 33 hours a week. I plan on another 5 years of it, retiring when I'm 70. I'm just finishing a week of fishing up near Orr and this not working stuff does have some appeal. Anyway, best wishes, it will all work out.

You will figure it out Glenn.I retired 13 years ago. Our retirement included an option of taking 25% of our total in a 1 time payment. Then figure out the monthly payment. I took it and we added it to our 401. Why not let us get the interest?

I love gardening, so I went and worked in a grocery store produce department. Put all that into a hunting a fishing account. That lasted until knee surgery. Couldn't stand for 8 hours a day.

I love being retired with lots of activities. You will to. We have traveled since then.....taking 6 cruises and a 21 day bus ride around Europe. With this Covid 19 thing won't be doing any of that till their is a vaccine.

Retire...... :happy1: :happy1:  :happy1:

Like I said on the other site, retirement is easier than people think if a person is somewhat financially responsible. I thought unions sold themselves as providing job security from knee jerk bad bosses among other things. How can this happen?

it was a financial decision based on the Hall's finance. I represent the shops. They don't bring the revenue in like field construction. Shops pay monthly dues, the field pays monthly dues plus field dues of 4 1/4% of there gross when working. Our field took a real smack when this COVID hit. Most jobs got cancelled or delayed, pushed out to unknown dates, and next year doesn't look good either.

Simple math, my wages, benifits, car and expenses don't add up. I retain senority rights at my former employer and could go back there if I choose, but more than likely won't. I may dabble in something part-time in town, we shall see.

so this kinda forced retirement thing has had me running a whole spectrum of emotions, from being totally pissed to well, maybe its time and a good thing. so this past 4-5 days I've read and heard things that kinda teed me off.

one of the things that transpired was the International assigning our shops to an International Rep that actually came from a shop. I decided to give him a call!!!!! a half hour phone conversation with him was quite interesting to say the least. I know the guy well, and we talk.

lets just say my attitude towards retiring has changed and its down the path of I think its going to be a good time to retire, and NO I will not go back and be this so called consultant or help. I walk out the door that last day i'm DONE!!

that IR made some comment they may invite me down to the ISO conference in vegas the next time they have it. that be cool. to me that means some of those international people do or did appreciate the job I did the past 13 years. :happy1: :happy1:

oh I hear what your saying, thing is they'll only call when there in a pickle. I could get into helping organize a new shop.

But hear is my thought process, if they feel they don't need me, or can do without me for just 1 more year... Let them figure it out.

I feel bad for my shop members because I truly believe they will not be properly represented.

Glenn,I tried retiring last april wilst being furload as non essential,i'm a crabby single old fart that can't survive on my SS income but the unemployment + extra $600 sure helped until july 26th,now my company called me back, but truth be known I need the income, but learning my trade all over again sucks.

Goodluck Glenn if you retire,do it before hunting season, enjoy what you can today as long as you're healthy now, things might change by december for ya.Life is full of surprises.

One thing about retirement for me anyways.  The list never gets done.  I get a little stressed cuz I think I have everything done and then up pops a few more things and I try to hurry up and get them done.  Sometimes I just say the heck with it and take a day off and do fun stuff.  I need to do that more often.  The wife is wonderful and tells me to don't worry about it.  Like you tell me she says.  Just wait and do it tomorrow.  LOL  The retirement slogan you remember.  I try to just relax and go with the flow and try to get something done each day even if it is a small thing.  At least I crossed something off the list.

I respectively say BS on the Roony.  My Dad retired about 25 years ago and I remember him and my uncle saying the exact same thing.  We have paid in and we need to make the wacko politicians remember that we paid into it.  It is not an entitlement it is a savings fund.  Anyone that thinks different is the enemy!  Don't forget that and I won't neither.

I don't recall any Busy raiding it. I know Bush 2 tried to make it that the money you put in went in under your name and then it would be yours and yours alone. But the Dems threw a hissy fit over that.

Just last week the president signed an executive order that, in fact, defunded SS and Medicare. He also said that if he were reelected he would make those cuts permanent.

If you live long enough you will draw back more than you put in!  You can create an account nf a few minutes and keep looking at it whenever you want to.  Can enter when you may retire and click the deal and will pop up with your numbers. You can play with the numbers to see how it works out for you.

:surrender:  every so often I get a statement from S.S. My estimate was $2900.09 per month. I'm sure taxes have to be taken also. I till I turn 65 I'm pretty much covered by the union plan.

LPS, is right do the math. I'd have to live till I'm 77 before it matters.

Same with my pension. I need to draw for 4  1/2 years maybe 4 based on my numbers then it's actually been all paid out what I have put in.

It's easy to start an online account & I had 1 long before I was ready to draw. By putting in my different retirement dates it was easy for me to see that I'd be 75  before I would make up the difference between drawing at 62 or waiting 'til I was 65. So I choose 62

I still get a statement at the end of the year ,Boober. Now instead of showing my earnings for the previous year, it now shows me how much I can make without it effecting my SSA. Being that you'll still be workin, I think  you should still get a statement every year with what they have for your earnings that year & how it effects what you'll be able to draw.

It was your buddy LBJ.   He put it on budget to cover up the deficits from the Democrats war in Vietnam.

And sorry to say, it is indeed an entitlement, and we have no legal recourse if Congress were to cut or abolish it.   But a lot of us vote...

It is too bad that health insurance is such a huge financial burden on us, actually dictating when we can retire.  I remember when I was about 16 and my Dad and Uncle were talking about how now they had a few dollars taken out of their checks to help fund their health care.  I remember them saying how it may even go up next year and eventually they could be paying $100 a month for a family policy.
Title: Re: retiring?????????????????
Post by: LPS on August 08/16/20, 09:35:41 AM
Now that I rethought that last comment I think what they were saying is that a family policy could cost as much as $100.  With it being that much money their employers may have to start taking some money out of their checks to help pay for it.

If you wait until full retirement age there is no wacking of benefits. If you retire early, they cut your benefits if you earn over a certain amount. That is one reason to consider waiting until full retirement age which varies with your date of birth.
Title: Re: retiring?????????????????
Post by: LPS on August 08/16/20, 02:31:11 PM
In my case I could make $17,000 or so a year which is about $1,400 a month.  If you make more than that in a month and you let them know right away you just don't get your SS benefit that month.  If you don't tell them and they find out later there are repercussions and I don't know what they are.  The year you turn 65 you can earn about $40,000 a year.  Once you enter the year of turning 66 you can earn as much as you want.  This is pretty accurate but double check it.
Title: Re: retiring?????????????????
Post by: LPS on August 08/16/20, 02:37:05 PM
I retired when I was 64 so that $17,000 a year applied to me at that point.  That is not take home it is the gross amount you make as W-2 income.  Interest income or rental income doesn't count.  Only if you receive a W-2 for that income.  So they told me it is best to shoot for $1,300 cuz it is a shame if you lost your SS monthly benefit cuz you earned $50 too much that month. I called the Bemidji office since it is closest to me.  They were so helpful every time I called.  If you contact them they will send you a schedule letting you know how much you will make and you can look years in advance to see what you will get.  Or like we said just make an acct. and keep in touch there.  Takes 5 minutes.  You will look at it frequently.

My last year end statement told me of this years increase in monthly benefits & went on to say that I could earn either $17,800 or $18,800  this year without it effecting my monthly amount. I'm not sure  if I read it on that statement or if it was online but I did read that if I made over that amount I would lose $1 of monthly benefits for every $2 over the 17.8-18.8 K I earned.
Title: Re: retiring?????????????????
Post by: delcecchi on August 08/17/20, 09:22:44 AM
The good news, as I understand it, is that if you happen to make too much to get a benefit some month, your benefit gets refigured as if you started a month later, or something like that.   And I don't think you need to contact them if you are going to be working, they take care of it automatically.

nope not at all. I've actually had some good email conversations with Reb.

And for the record, dew2 quit coming here because of your posts and opinions on mille lacs lake.

With that being said, unless it's actually retirement conversations I'm done with this type of conversation. Like Mike said it's history.

so last nite at the membership meeting the members approved me being able to keep my phone and laptop!!!!! :happy1: :happy1:

then the car. when i looked at kelly blue book they valued it at 3818.00 to 4200.00. we need to actually sell it to the dealership then he sells to me. he said on the lot it would value at 8 grand. both myself and da boss disagreed and said that was way to much. so he swung it by the executive board and agreed to sell it to me for 5500.00. little more then what i wanted to pay but i'm not gonna argue. he did let me put new tires on it. along with an oil change that bill was close to 12oo bucks. it'll be about 6 grand with tax and title transfer.

so you guys think thats an OK deal?????? it'll have a 163,000 mile on it, had a new tranny put in it a year ago and has no dings in it, or rust. whadda think????????

also the furlough thing is going to continue through spet. so my last day of actual being on payroll  will be friday sept 25th. furlough that last 3 days. i cant wait now. he also said its probably going to get worse as inthe rest of the staff will be furloughed a month at a time through the end of the year..........so its a good time to be retiring in my opinion. he wasnt to optomistict for 2021 at this point either.

Being it is all hwy miles helps too.  It didn't stop at every stop sign in town for all of those miles.  And the doors weren't slammed every 10 miles at the end of a short trip like most family cars.

LPS,your insight is spot on,my learning curve for retirement was lacking, leaned " by gosh and by golly" but your info is accurate

thanx,

oh,none essential employee started for me last april,UE beifits helped to pad my SS income,I sniffed around for some part time gig but not seriously looking, nothing for a hard ,beat up old fart...So spent many afternoons after morning workouts at white bear lake public boat access, amussing myself watching folks trying to launch boats, cheap humor, its amazing how unaware folks are at this access,no concern about other folks, just pull in,block the access for other folks with they're shete together rigs ready to launch or trailer out.these folks are clueless the circus starts, take the tarp off, unload vehicle and load boat etc.,folks fuming behind, some voice up,then the trailers afraid of the water....classic. last month they had a shooting one affernoon...little extreme just to put in.

I did a little checkin, glenn, it's got the 3.6L/6 cyl right? Couldn't get a quote from Edmunds without the VIN   so I gave KBB a look. Is it the LS, LT, or the Premier model? I'm bettin it's the LS, for that year, in your zip code, in very good condition, & those miles the value for trade in is between $5400-$6900. So I'd say they're tryin to treat you right.

OK gents,  it's my last full day at work today. I have a short exiting meeting tomorrow morning with HR and have NO plans on staying after that. So officailly (my spelling sucks) it has been 36 years and 41 days at this job. Hell of a run. My only plans after tomorrow are to clean out both of the garages and toss the crap in them I should have done 20 years ago. After that I may try to see if I still know how to shoot a grouse or two. Maybe a duck and goose too. Get ready for deer hunting, have coffee and breakfast with the dog. Maybe throw a few smart remarks at glenn on here.
Looking like it's getting a bit busier than I thought. Oh well, can't wait to get started with my new chapter of life. Have a great day everyone, I will. :happy1: :happy1: :happy1:

Now that you will be on a fixed income. You may want to have a big garage sale and sell all the crap your going to throw.  Little more gas money to go grouse hunting.   :happy1:
That's my plan in 2 years.  Sell everything and move out of Brooklyn Center up north where there's less gun fire going on!   :police: :police:  :surrender:

Thought about that leech. Not sure if any of my crap is worth anything, I'll find out next week when I tear into my little garage and get started on it. That's when I'll see exactly what is in there. I desperately need the room with the latest addition of the side by side. If all works out I hope to build pole barn next Summer. 36' x 56'. Then I'll have some room for "stuff". I do know there's a hitch to attach to a car and pull it behind a motorhome, if anyone is interested the first C-note takes it. I think it's a $300.00 hitch. Have a great day all.  :happy1: :happy1:

Thought about that leech. Not sure if any of my crap is worth anything, I'll find out next week when I tear into my little garage and get started on it. That's when I'll see exactly what is in there. I desperately need the room with the latest addition of the side by side. If all works out I hope to build pole barn next Summer. 36' x 56'. Then I'll have some room for "stuff". I do know there's a hitch to attach to a car and pull it behind a motorhome, if anyone is interested the first C-note takes it. I think it's a $300.00 hitch. Have a great day all.  :happy1: :happy1:

Better hurry. Likely to get exciting in November and December and I ain't talking deer hunting

The Mrs. and I stopped in to see Glenn on our way home.   He wasn't home but the neighbors said they saw him riding off into the sunset yesterday and fell off his house twice trying to get there.   Maybe next time little buddy.

FINALLY, after playing phone tag for the past 3 weeks with the social security guy, we connected this afternoon. He said I'll start getting checks in Nov and payday is the 3rx week of the month. :happy1: :happy1:

So, to get this right, he said "checks in the mail"   :rotflmao:
I assume things will go right for you.  There was mass confusion a number of years ago.  If I spoke to three people and ask the same question I would get at least two different answers.

glenn,, I was told it will take three months to get your first check from social security. The bad news for me is I just turned 61 yesterday and have to wait another year before I can draw. Don't worry, it will be Saturday ever day real soon. :happy1: :happy1:

yea that is what i was told also..........but i did start this process with SS back in August filling it out online so the 3 months is about correct.

i also must of filled it out correctly because that phone call was simply to verify if it was really me. but them buggers are sneaky. :tut: :tut: :tut: good thing i have lotz of practice catching management people trying to slip things by me. :tut: :doah: :rotflmao:

he threw out a couple questions like pushing my retirement date to 2021, about when i started working........ he didnt fool me. :rotflmao: :rotflmao:

glenn, I did the math collecting SS starting at 62, a lesser amount, and then at 66 and 10 months which is max. It will take me until age 87 for the both of them to add up to the same amount. It was a "no-brainer" decision for me.  :happy1: :happy1:

:happy1: yep pretty much how I looked at it too!!!

I started paying into Ss when I was 16. Time to collect. One of his questions was when I started working, I had to think quick and hard about what year I started to pay taxes and SS. :rotflmao:

It is a big moment Glenn.  You will handle it just fine.  There is a learning curve though.  It has been 2 years for me and I am still learning to relax and enjoy it.  Gets better all of the time.

It is a kinda unique position to be in, ain't it glenn? Am on the threshold of it here and while it will likely be a more gradual transition than yours, I can empathize with what it'll be like. Hard to believe a person has worked as many years as you have sometimes. My congratulations to you! May you come to enjoy the finer things in life, such as tomatoes and cottage cheese!  :rotflmao:

Not there yet, but It seems like when your not retired you have to much to do and not enough time. Look back and do all those things you said you would do or wanted to do the last 40 years, If you were Retired. And do them.  :happy1: :happy1:

There's a retired guy on another forum I really admire. This guy builds all kinds of Ice fishing camera panning motors, locator cable winders and gizmo's and even built his own small snowmobile for ice fishing out of an old ones.  His only problem with retirement is running out of time before ideas!  :happy1: :happy1:

But, you could be like my father in Law. Watch movie videos and read books until you punch life's clock one last time.   Either way do what you like.

I'm sure my wife and kids are going to say at my funeral after I die on the Ice, on my ATV or fall out on my tree stand!  " he died doing what he wanted to do"   :rotflmao:

Winter months are the worse, especially now with the virus keeping us almost shut in, and living here in the cities where ice fishing is not the best, makes it even rougher.
At least the better half and I play some cribbage and I do some computer games, but that is about it.

I have been retired for two years.  It is great but does take some getting used to.  I like to fish and just be in the boat so that kills a lot of time.  But there is a learning curve with what to do with all of the extra time.  Slowly my daily routine evolved into what I do now.  I do read a lot when I am bored and that helps.  I do most of the cooking and cleaning the kitchen up too now.  You will find your routine in time.  Just relax and enjoy it.

It's the winter months that I think will be the issue. I don't ice fish, ski, snowmobile, hike. Nothing. Just sitting around. Read 17 books since Oct.

Once the snow & ice go away the boat will be out and on Rainy.

The straightening Glenn out sounds like to much work. Heck i'd rather jump out in front of one of these logging trucks then spend a hour a day working on him. Much like the Vikings winning a Super Bowl some things just can't be done.
