Title: new scopes
Post by: glenn57 on January 01/05/21, 01:50:55 PM
ok, so i am getting into seriously thinking about new scope purchases. i WILL be replacing the scope on my 30-06. i'm pretty set on either a vortex diamondback or the crossfire II. or a leapold 3 x 9 x 40. i've been told those scopes are close in quality but vortex right now has the best warrranty in the market right now.

for various reasons i am almost certain i will be purchasing these at the Cabelas in rogers. i have a cabelas gift card and several visa gift cards.

my main concern is a decent scope for my little 22. its a browning lever action. any ideas on what brand, kind i should be looking at.?????

I am happy with my Nikon Prostaff Rimfire II on a Ruger 10/22.  It is a more than adequate for the paper punching I do with it.

I also see that it Nikon seems to have gotten out of the scope business.  I don't remember when this happened.  Does anyone else know what happened here?

Update:  Gun control: Nikon withdrawing from the rifle scope business (https://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/nikon-is-exiting-the-rifle-scope-business/)

All I could find is that they decided to get out of a competitive market in 2019, which is too bad, because I did liked the glass in their scopes (and cameras).  Still it makes me wonder if the real reason was because some muckety-muck decided that guns were evil.

I took off a 3x9x50 Nikon pro staff, and replaced it with a vortex 3x12x56 crossfire. I didn't care for the clarity of the Nikon with no eye relief adjustment.

I literally just put it on tonight. I like the optics a lot. This weekend will be the sight in, and see how it performs. This on my new ar, and is rated for the gun.... so we'll see.

Good to know.  Like I said, I don't demand too much from that paper punching plinker.

I know *real* riflemen will want to spend as much or more on a scope as they do the rifle, but that long range, last minute of daylight, F-class competition, sub-sub MOA is not what I'm looking for based on how I hunt in MN.

I like to start here.  Field and Steam posts an updated article on "best scopes" every few years.  I reckon they are as objective as you can be and it is good to read about which high end features are now being offered at lower prices.

Field and Stream:  10 Best Budget Riflescopes (https://www.fieldandstream.com/10-best-budget-riflescopes/)

P.S.  Outdoor Life recently had some articles too...

You can't go wrong with a Leopold, but it is a very competitive market and it is fun to see what else is out there.

I got my Leopold VariX II 2.5x7 umpteen years ago (40?).  The tech has improved dramatically, but that scope still aims straighter than I shoot.

So next week, after Valentine's, I'm headed towards the big city. Plan is to hit cabela's for my new scopes. My question is what is Cabela's store policy, if anyone knows, about bringing guns into the store?? I already know cased and not loaded. Do I need to check them in at the service counter or can I just Walz back to the gun/ scope dept.??
Title: Re: new scopes
Post by: Steve-o on February 02/08/21, 03:14:27 PM
I see what you did there.   :bonk:

I can't help you with Cabela's, but when you go down to Ahlman's Gun Shop in Morristown, MN, they have big signs as you walk up the stairs telling you all guns should be uncased with the actions open when you walk in.

Its kinda weird the first time - when you are so used to keeping everything cased everywhere - to pull 'em out and open 'em up.

I asked them why they did things their way.  They said they want to see your gun is unloaded when you walk in the door, not when the pull it out of the case on the bench.  They said way to many loaded guns made it into the store when the guns were cased with closed actions.

(Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that Ahlman's method would be appropriate for Cabelas.)

Cabela's -Best option is to have it in the case and come to the front door. Let the first person you see know that you have one to take to the gun counter. They will direct you where to go.

OK, you sharpshooters, snipers.  :rotflmao: got the 22 zeroed in. :happy1: my 30-06, bore sited, my azz. long story short I went to 50 yards roughly. Right and left is  :happy1:. My high/ low is still 8-9 inches low and I had to have turned it up at least 11/2 rounds.

I had this issue with a scope I put on a 30-30 but don't recall how many rotations I moved it up before I got it zeroed in.

So my question is, just how many rotations on the up/down can I go before I guy needs to maybe shim the scope? Is this normal on occasions?

1/4 inch. Per click. So I'm assuming 1/4 inch per hundred yards.

I've never "shimmed" a scope in my life...
Scope not tight enough?
Are these see through scope rings?
Did you buy a crappy cheap scope?

Yeah...bore sighting " might" get you on the paper. I usually will crack a couple off at 50' with a 36"X 36" piece of cardboard just to see what to expect. Then adjust from there.

Just when glenn started this thread all was well with my vortec scope on my .22,then friday the cross hairs started to break, this is the second time in 5 years, looking thru the scope was like looking through a kaleidoscope but dead center was spot on,so the good news the vortec scope is a dandy when its functioning with a lifetime warrenty,so  dropped the scope off at my local sport shop to let them send it in and wouldn't ya know when I got home the neighborhood squrriels were having a meeting at my feeders, fixed em with wd40 on the feeder pole.very amusing.

When I bought my .243 a few years ago it was supposed to be bore sighted at the factory.  When I went and shot it the scope wasn't even tightened up.  I had a guy bore sight my Ithaca Deer Slayer about 30 years ago when I bought it.  I had to force him to take $5.  Still to this day it is right on the mark.  And it isn't babied neither.  I want to get one of those lazer bore sighters too.  I just looked on Amazon and there are countless models for under $30.  They come with multiple calibers of sight in things.  I am ordering one.

Ok Glenn now you are costing me some money.  I got that Lazer sight in thing today.  I haven't felt good about my .22 scope for some time.  I can't seem to get it sighted in.  I am getting a complex thinking it is me but no that can't be.  LOL  The thing is cool as heck.  Green light.  Well when I was trying to turn my scope to match the lazer I couldn't even turn my up and down enough to get there.  So I got it very close but not perfect and went and shot at a box about 30 yards away.  Hit 4" to the right and 2" high no matter where I turned knobs.  My scope has expired.  It is a Bushnell Sportview and about 20 years old.  SO I think I need to get a new scope.  I got some Vortex binocs a couple of years ago and can't believe how clear they are every time I look through them.  I can get a Vortex Diamond back scope for $189.  It's 7 x 35.  It will be for short distance.

I bought my Remington Fieldmaster pump .22 in about 2000.  Love the gun.  Got it with a Bushnell Sportview 3 x 9 scope on it.  I just looked at Bushnell's warranty.  Guaranteed for life on a riflescope means 30 years.  SO it is under warranty.  I entered my info and they gave me a case number to send it in.  Each scope has a number on it so they can trace the age etc.  I sent it in today.  We shall see.

Never lived there.  Been through before.  I just read that Waite Park is the #1 city in MN with the most serious crimes per capita.  Murder, rape, armed robbery etc.  Guess what town is #2 in that category?  Bemidji!   This has nothing to do with scopes unless you use one committing a crime or maybe self defense so I am still on topic.   :happy1:

Just saw on the news today.  2 Native males shooting guns at cars and hit a business or two???   Still looking for them.  Once a week there are alerts looking for someone.  Usually young people.  Unreal!

Went to school at Collegeville. I still got some good friends up that way. Lots of nice little pothole lakes north of Richmond. I worked part time at a small liquor store in Waite Park, Coborn brothers owned it.

I heard the demographics of the Cloud area are changing rapidly.  I don't have any evidence to back that up.

I just received a brand new scope from Bushnell the other day.  It's a basic no fancy one but it is on my .22 so not so critical.  Good to know the lifetime warranty is worth something though.  It is a Banner Dusk to Dawn 3-9 x 40.
