Title: NFL Stuff
Post by: LPS on June 06/07/21, 01:49:25 PM
I just read that since San Fran is so expensive to live in that the 49ers have a guy that helps players adjust to it.  Trey Lance from Marshall is learning that now  The average home price in Marshall is $198,000.  That will get you about a 2,000 sf home.  In San Fran the average price for an 1,800 sf home is $1.9 mil!!!

Back in the early 80’s I did business with a company located in th Bay Area. The company sold and the employees had a chance to move to Decatur, Georgia. They were all extremely unhappy- until they were able to sell their small bungalows on postage stamp lots for enough money to buy nice big houses with acreage, swimming pools, three car garages, and at least, in one case, a “stable”. And then they still had money left over.

Don't NFL teams have a guy or a "fixer" for everything?

A guy to tell rookies to save their money.
A guy to remind players to stay out of trouble.
A guy to drive players home when they've had a few too many.
A guy to bail them out of jail when they don't call the guy who should drive them home.

Looks like the saints will be looking for a new head coach. Payton announced today he is retiring. But woundnt rule out a return after 2022.

Another piece said if Erin does retire he won't pull a Farve and unretire.

Rumors are that Jerry Jones wants him for the Cowboys. He still has 2 years left on his contract. So He would have to be traded to the Cowboys. A bunch of draft picks I would guess. Will have to fire McCarthy. He could be the next Vikes coach. Knows the NFC North.

Just because everybody wanted him, doesn't mean he is going to make the all the right moves.

The Vikings needed a new Head Coach in 2006 and the "hot" name floating around in the "inside circles" that everybody wanted was...

Brad Childress!!!

Previous owner "Red" McCombs ran the team on the cheap, and his choice for head coach, Mike Tice, didn't demand top dollar.

New owner Zigi Wilf fired Tice and - wanting to be the best organization in football - went out to hire the best out there, and the consensus choice back then was Chili.  I remember it being said back then after they hired him, "We weren't going to let him leave the building without signing a contract."

Damn, I wish they would have let him interview with another team.   :doah:

G'Luck to 'da Bears  :blues brothers: and Poles.

Besides, Gronk has his own super model girlfriend and plenty of money.

Bills Rumors: Could Rob Gronkowski Land in Buffalo If Tom Brady Retires? (https://heavy.com/sports/buffalo-bills/rob-gronkowski-bucs-contract/)

Before Gronkowski re-signed with the Bucs last season, it was reported that the Bills, who were in the business of looking to sign a tight end, made an offer to the 6-foot-6 offensive stud. News 4 Buffalo reporter Matt Parrino tweeted on Saturday, January 29, “Now with Tom Brady retiring, interested to see if Rob Gronkowski considers playing with Josh Allen. He said Bills were in the mix last year.”

Doubtful, Gronk has enough money he will just go out with Brady and be happy. From what I've read he is pretty tight with his money and won't have to worry about that.

Yea dutchy heard that too. From what I read he lives off his endorsement money and stashes his football money.

Today's local paper had an article about a local cold spring, ROCORI, kid that played his college ball in ND. He's playing Saturday in a college all star game, sounds like he has a decent chance of playing in the NFL.  :happy1: the latest mock draft has him going to the Packers in the 4th round. Guess he's 6' 7 and 300 lbs and an offensive lineman.

IF he makes it he would be the 3rd ROCORI kid to make it to the NFL. Eric Decker, and Ricky Bell before him.

Packers' Aaron Rodgers named 2021 NFL MVP (https://www.foxnews.com/sports/packers-aaron-rodgers-2021-nfl-mvp)

Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers was named the NFL's most valuable player on Thursday night at the NFL Honors presentation in Los Angeles, becoming the fifth player in league history to earn the award in back-to-back seasons.

Rodgers, 38, edged out Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady with his stellar regular-season performance for his fourth MVP award, just one away from Peyton Manning's record five.

Upon hearing the announcement, Rodgers was quoted as saying, ":queen:"

I don't understand it.  SO Burrows takes his team to the Super Bowl in his second year, and Stafford gets his new team there in his first year with them.  I see them both as more deserving of MVP than K-aaron.  So what did he do?  Win the weakest division in the league.  Big deal.

You can't be considered a legit NFL TV option without first rate announcers. Thats what ESPN found out with their MNF crew, which costs them about 75 cents per game total. It's been a long time since i've watched a Monday night game with decent announcers. Yeah, the whole county seems over Covid - everyone 'cept the Biden's Administration of course.  ;)

It was never follow the science.  It was always follow the money and try to figure out which way the political wind was blowing.

Now that a 'UGE chunk of money has been made by Big Pharma and Biden finally realizes most Americans are sick of Draconian mandates, he says, "Get kids back in school."  Thanks for the leadership, chief.

But as far as the NFL was concerned, keeping all those testing regimes and isolation protocols in place was costing them money.  To them, testing players for weed and Covid is bad for business.   :rotflmao:

Seahawks agree to trade Russell Wilson to Broncos.

There is no way I would give up this much for Russell Wilson...

The Broncos have agreed to trade
- quarterback Drew Lock,
- tight end Noah Fant,
- defensive lineman Shelby Harris,
- two first-round picks,
- two second-round picks and
- a fifth-round pick
to the Seahawks for Wilson and a fourth-round pick, sources said.

The Broncos don't strike me as a team that is only one good quarterback away from a Superbowl title.

And if they aren't ready, they have mortgaged their ability to get better immediately by sending away so many high draft choices.  By the time they can improve the squad, Wilson will be that much older and likely will have diminished skills.  :doah:

I definitely like the Seahawks side of this deal.  :happy1:

So Aaron :queen: Rodgers gets to have his day.  He is the highest paid player in NFL league history.   :kingscourt:

That is until the next big time free agent QB signing knocks him off his thrown.  (They'll both be  :rotflmao: :rotflmao: all the way to the bank.)

I can't wait to hear Rodgers whine when the Packa's can't afford to keep Devante Adams.  Or maybe they pay Adams big bucks and A-Rog whines about them not being able to afford top notch offensive linemen.  Or b!tc#es when the defense can't stop anyone.

So he is sucking the life out of the Pack like Cousins is doing here.  How much money is enough?  So maybe you like getting nailed by big linemen and linebackers since you have taken up all of the money that would have provided protection.  AND k-aaron getting the player of they year is a joke too.  Just cuz they won one of the weakest divisions in football???   I don't get it. I would have loved to have Wilson here but at a reduced cost definitely not a spend the farm to get him deal.  I would be surprised if they even win their division now or the next few years too since they gave away those big draft picks.  Well good luck to them.

On first blush, the players thought the Franchise Tag was a good deal for them, so they agreed to it in collective bargaining.

But now seeing the long term effects, none of those guys want to play on the Franchise Tag.  Yeah, they get "Top-5" money for one year, but if they get hurt, they might never get another contract - or at least another big contract.

They like as much money guaranteed up front as possible, and then it doesn't matter so much if they get hurt, or cut; if they win or if they lose.  They got paid.  And I'm not blaming them because that is how the system works.

Commanders offered high picks in the 2022, 2023, and 2024 for Wilson. But he had a no trade clause and didn't want to go to Washington. Plus the Seahawks wanted him to go to the AFC. AFC West is now loaded with QB's. Wilson, Mahommes, Carr, and Justin Herbert.

Here's to rubbing more salt in the old wound...

Herschel Walker to the Minnesota Vikings: The Best Trade in NFL History (https://bleacherreport.com/articles/140116-the-best-trade-in-nfl-history)

In 1989, at the peak of Walker's NFL career, the Cowboys sent Herschel Walker to the Vikings for five players and six draft picks.

The players were LB Jesse Solomon, DB Isiac Holt, RB Darrin Nelson, LB David Howard, and DE Alex Stewart.

The picks turned into players such as Emmitt Smith, Russell Maryland, Kevin Smith, and Darren Woodson.

Walker played (only) two years for the Vikings and NEVER surpassed 1,000 rushing yards.

The Billion dollar TV / Streaming deals the NFL is signing is just another blow to the fans. Yes there will be more exposure for those willing to pay for it. But winning will mean less and less as we go forward. They keep adding play-off teams so you don't really need to be that good to make the play-offs. Won't be long and the NFL will be like the college bowl scene, 5-6 record gets you a bowl.

TV bank accounts are full, stadiums are full, gambling is legal, people don't care about the moral compass on players. Congress closes their eyes. How can life be better as a NFL owner?

I see Garoppolo and Cousins as being interchangeable in general, but here are some differences that could be relevant here.

BUT, the Vikes could get out of that 2022 cap hit with Cousins' contract and sign an equivalent, middle-of-the-road QB with a more team-friendly deal, it would be tempting.

I don't know if he is any better but he has twice as many wins as losses.  I am ready for a change.  Kirk is 50-50 in wins and losses in his career and is a dud in the locker room.  I actually think being a dud in the locker room is a huge issue.  He is the exact opposite as Favre who threw 2 or 3 interceptions a game but had the  great attitude in the locker room and the whole team was behind him.  Kirk motivates noone.

The 44-year-old Brady led the NFL in yards passing (5,316), touchdowns (43), completions (485) and attempts (719) in 2021, but the Buccaneers lost at home to the Los Angeles Rams in the divisional round of the playoffs.

I don't think there was a better option out there, unless you want to take a chance on Deshaun Watson.

The Panther's wanted a QB bad, and they might have been willing to give up a lot to get Cousins, but the Vikes still would have needed to find a QB.

If they plug in a washed-up journeyman or start from scratch with an unproven rookie, I gotta believe Jefferson, Cook, and some other good offensive players nearing free agency are gone.  Then they would be completely starting from scratch.

I think this was their best move.  Cousins is good.  Maybe the new coaching staff can make him better.

And if Cousins turns out to be great, it will be really sad that the Vikes wasted 3 or 4 years of Cousins' career with a head coach who didn't trust him and wouldn't enable him.

I reckon so.  Couldn't they keep Mayfield until they find out how long the suspension will be?  But I suppose Mayfield's trade value is worth the most before the draft than after next season starts.

The NFL league office is in a tight spot now with Watson.  No criminal charges, only civil.  But those complaints are for sexual assault, which is a sore spot for the league.

And given the high price at least one team was willing to pay for his play, it clearly demonstrates that team owners and league officials are NOT on the same page when it comes to these things.

The Chiefs set a bad example when they sold the farm to move up and get Mahomes, but it paid off for them.  Now, in a copycat league, other teams are trying to catch that same lightening in a bottle.  Time will tell for the Browns.

So here is the kick in the :mooning: ...

Watson signs fully guaranteed five year $230 Millon contract that starts in 2023.  If (when) he gets suspended in 2022, his annual salary will be divided by 17 games per season, and he will lose that money for each game he is suspended.

But in 2022, he "only" makes $1,000,000.  Most guys would want to start earning that big money right away.  But now for each suspension game, he will only lose $58,000.     If he would have wanted to start making the big money right away, he stood to lose $2.7Million per game.   :undecided:

Deshaun Watson subject of lawsuit from 23rd woman alleging sexual misconduct (https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2022/jun/01/deshaun-watson-subject-of-lawsuit-from-23rd-woman-alleging-sexual-misconduct)

Watson has not spoken to the media since his introductory news conference on March 25. At that time, Watson said he has “never assaulted or disrespected or harassed any woman in my life.”

P.S.  The lawyer for the women says there will be a 24th case filed soon.  :doah:

Former Dallas Cowboys running back Marion Barber III was found dead in his home by Frisco Police, the Cowboys announced Wednesday. Barber's cause of death is unknown. He was 38 years old.

"We are heartbroken by the tragic death of Marion Barber III. Marion was an old-school, hard-nosed football player who ran with the will to win every down," The Cowboys said in a statement. "He had a passion for the game and love for his coaches and teammates. Our hearts go out to Marion's family and friends during this time."

Barber was drafted by Dallas in 2005, spending six of his seven seasons in the NFL with the Cowboys before retiring with the Chicago Bears. During the 2007 season, Barber earned a Pro-Bowl appearance.

The former Minnesota Golden Gopher rushed for 35 touchdowns during his standout collegiate career, and ranks fifth all-time in program history with 3,276 rushing yards. He also earned an All-Big Ten nod in 2003 as a redshirt sophomore.

One of the fun things about the NFL is you get to love the teams you love and hate the teams you hate  - for any reason you want.

Some teams like the Cowboys and Seahawks and the Saints (minus Drew Brees) have a seemingly unending list of reasons to hate them.

But over the years, the Broncos never really did anything to evoke those kinds of negative feelings.

The Browns did a 180.  From everyone finally noticing and liking them to despising them with the Watson pig on board.  I hope Mayfield does get to go to Carolina after the Browns mishandled this whole situation.
Title: Re: NFL Stuff

I hope the Browns have to come crawling back to Mayfield to ask him to be the starter next season while Watson is suspended.

However, I don't know if it would do any good for Mayfield to hold out for a trade in that scenario.

But I can obviously see why he would say, "I'm not risking my health anymore by playing for the Browns."

Baker is out with the Browns, they already signed a back-up for Watson when he is suspended.

This...

Baker Mayfield excused from Browns mandatory minicamp next week (https://www.nfl.com/news/baker-mayfield-excused-from-browns-mandatory-minicamp-next-week)

Baker Mayfield will be excused from the offseason workout sessions, a mutual decision between him and the team, coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed to reporters Wednesday.

"We felt like that was the best decision for both sides," Stefanski said, declining to discuss further his communication with Mayfield.

All players are subject to more than $90,000 in team fines if they are not present during all three days of mandatory minicamp, but Mayfield's excused absence means Cleveland will not penalize the quarterback.

Still, Mayfield remains on Cleveland's roster, as the team has so far failed to locate a trade partner for the quarterback. Carolina and Seattle remain potential landing spots for Mayfield, as their QB situations remain unresolved, but no move is imminent.

Right...  And since Watson is "only" going to make $2 Million next year, even if Goodell suspends him for 8 games to start the season, he'll "only" lose $1 Million bucks.

BUT...  The plaintiff laywer's knows Watson is getting $230 Million guaranteed in the years following.

So...  I reckon those ladies that settled their suits got just "a wee bit more" than what the NFL could fine him for.  :sleazy:

He had to make some kind of offensive move for himself.  Anything for him to do now is better than nothing.  He needs all of our forgiveness too.   SO he better be working at it.  I can't think of him ever having my respect.  OR: Could he be such a dumbazz that these women know they can play him because there was sexual harassment going on.  Even if they sort of enjoyed it, and I am sure some did.  But what a way to put yourself out there when you are a pervert.  It bit him in the ass and I'm glad it did.  One of us would be in jail.

Justice would be a 40 game suspension not including preseason or play-off games.

Watson going to the Browns. 3 number 1's and 2 number 2's. Baker Mayfield wants to go to the Colts. Now what will the NFL do about Watson?......Suspend him for some games?
So here is the kick in the :mooning: ...

Watson signs fully guaranteed five year $230 Millon contract that starts in 2023.  If (when) he gets suspended in 2022, his annual salary will be divided by 17 games per season, and he will lose that money for each game he is suspended.

But in 2022, he "only" makes $1,000,000.  Most guys would want to start earning that big money right away.  But now for each suspension game, he will only lose $58,000.     If he would have wanted to start making the big money right away, he stood to lose $2.7Million per game.   :undecided:

This just in...   :Photography:    Deshaun Watson's punishment increased from a 6 game suspension with $0 fine to 11 games with a $5M fine (the largest ever levied against an NFL player).

Cleveland Browns QB Deshaun Watson suspended 11 games, fined $5 million after settlement between NFL, NFLPA (https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/34412381/source-cleveland-browns-qb-deshaun-watson-suspended-11-games-fined-5m-settlement-nfl-nflpa)

The NFL and the NFL Players Association on Thursday reached a settlement in the Deshaun Watson disciplinary matter, agreeing that the Cleveland Browns quarterback will serve an 11-game suspension without pay after he was accused by more than two dozen women of sexual misconduct during massage sessions.

Watson will also pay a fine of $5 million and undergo mandatory evaluation by behavioral experts and follow their suggested treatment program.

Yet because Cleveland structured his contract to include a 2022 base salary of only $1.035 million, Watson was going to lose only $57,500 per game suspended, without the $5 million fine imposed in the settlement. Watson's total lost pay this season will be $632,500.

Then again...  we don't know how much he had to spend to settle all those cases out of court.   :doah:

Just saw this, I hope it pastes ok.  Kirk is getting more affordable it seems. Five NFL quarterbacks -- Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers ($50.2 million), Russell Wilson of the Denver Broncos ($49 million), Kyler Murray of the Arizona Cardinals ($46.1 million), Deshaun Watson of the Cleveland Browns ($46 million), and Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs ($45 million) -- are currently being paid more than $45 million annually, while Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen averages $43 million per year, but can make up to $48 million annually with incentives. Several other young quarterbacks -- including Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals, Justin Herbert of the Los Angeles Chargers, Jalen Hurts of the Philadelphia Eagles and Lamar Jackson of the Baltimore Ravens -- could all potentially get deals exceeding $45 million.

If he's the 9th best QB in the league, pay him like the 9th best QB in the league.

The Vikes overpaid for Cousins to get him to come.  I see no reason to overpay him now.  Best case scenario is it will take two years to rebuild the defense to be middle-of-the-pack.  And they can't do that if they overpay Kirk.  It ain't like the proverbial "Superbowl Window" is open for them in the foreseeable future.

If Kirk thinks he's goona get a better deal elsewhere, God bless him.  He might make more money, but his best chance for success ...

Wait.  Scratch that.  I was about to say his best chance for success is with the Vikings.     I can't go there.  :doah:

Lets face it, until a better QB falls in the Vike's lap or Kirk's performance drops off the chart, he is the devil they know - and I think they gotta ride it out.  But it cuts both ways and something tells me Kirk knows that too.   :coffee:

We saw what happened to Denver when they were desperate for Wilson.  We'll see what happens to Oakland Vegas after they cut Carr.

The discussion shouldn't be about Kirk. If should be about what does Jefferson do if Cousins signs or doesn't sign. No matter what the result Cousins is short term. Whereas Jefferson is a long term concern.

Cousins doesn't pass until someone is wide open till he started just tossing it to JJ even when not open.  Worked for most of the year but the last two or three games Kirk went back to not passing to JJ since he wasn't wide open.

 If JJ has no one that can get him the ball, he won't stay either IMO, no matter what his new deal says. He'll force a trade & I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him end up playing with his buddy, Diggs, as he knows Allen throws into double & triple coverage a lot.

That's what I was thinking.  They have their franchise QB under a rookie deal.  They just got a haul from trading the #1 draft pick.  They are set if they make the right moves.  They could be dominant and scary for the next 5 years - while the Vikes are basically starting over from scratch with just one stand-out wide receiver.

Like I said...  Da Bears still gotta make the right moves.   :blues brothers:  But they have a hellova lot more to work with than the Vikes.  Heck, they STILL get the Panthers #9 pick in this year's draft plus a lot more:  starting WR D.J. Moore, a 2nd round 2023 pick (#61 overall), ANOTHER 1st round pick in 2024, and a 2nd round pick in 2025!   Plus all their other regular draft picks.  I'd say that was a good move to start with.  :happy1:

The best pick the Bears got was the #1 next year. They then can draft the franchise quarterback because I don't think Fields is it. But hell, Lions, Vikings & Peckers don't have one either so maybe it's a toss-up. I do agree though, the Bears fleeced Carolina who also didn't have a franchise quarterback.

Yeah, but it took quite a few years for 'doze Cheeseheads to forgive him.  Remember, as a Vike, Favre spanked 'der :moon:'s pretty hard a couple of times.  They eventually got over it, but it took some time.  And I'll bet some diehard Packers "stockholders" still aren't over it.

Some more details.

Adam Thielen’s new contract with Panthers puts Vikings request for pay cut to shame (https://vikingswire.usatoday.com/2023/03/19/adam-thielens-new-contract-with-panthers-puts-vikings-request-for-pay-cut-to-shame/)

When the Minnesota Vikings asked wide receiver Adam Thielen to take a pay cut earlier in the offseason, he made the best possible decision for himself by politely declining to lower his $11.8 million base salary. After less than a week on the free agency market, Thielen signed a massive three-year $25 million contract with the Carolina Panthers

I absolutely disagree with the article headline.  I don't know how much of a pay cut the Vikings were asking him to take, but the Carolina contract is ALSO less than his $11.8 million base salary with the Vikings.  He took a pretty team-friendly deal with the Panthers.

Spotrac.com:  Adam Thielen Contract History (https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/carolina-panthers/adam-thielen-13071/)

3 years, $25M, $14M GUARTENTEED.  Annual base salary average = $8.3M.   There is an 'out' after two years for the team, which only has to take a $5M dead cap hit.

I don't know if the Vikings could have offered him as much as the Panthers given their financial constraints, but the way I look at it, Thielen definitely accepted a reduced contract and gave the Panthers team-friendly terms.

The good news is...  It looks like Thielen still has two good years left in him.   :happy1:

Title: Re: NFL Stuff

I think they are just throwing stuff up on the wall hoping something will stick...

2023 NFL free agency matchmaker: Lamar Jackson to the Lions, Odell Beckham Jr. to the Vikings, other scenarios (https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/2023-nfl-free-agency-matchmaker-lamar-jackson-to-the-lions-odell-beckham-jr-to-the-vikings-other-scenarios/)

Aaron Rodgers might want Odell in New York once he officially lands with the Jets, but a bigger opportunity could await OBJ back in Rodgers' longtime division. After parting with Adam Thielen, Minnesota is still in need of a running mate for Justin Jefferson, whose celebrity dynamism is similar to that of a younger Beckham. On a one- or two-year flyer, he makes a lot of sense as a proven route-runner opposite Jefferson's speed, especially with Kirk Cousins entering a make-or-break year.

No thanks.   :coffee:   Some team will get 6 or 7 good games from Beckham and he'll be hurt or pouting for the rest of the time.

Besides, don't need OBJ pi$$ing in JJ's ear.

:doah: I'll believe that when I see it, he turned down a $250 mil/5-year deal at the beginning of last season because there wasn't enough guaranteed money. Rumor has it that the guaranteed $ was ~ 120-130 mil then. He has come out & said since that he wants a fully guaranteed contract.

“Lamar Jackson was offered a deal — that he turned down — that included, at the time it was offered, $133 million due at signing — $133 million guaranteed. The contract also had injury guarantees that brought the total guarantees up to $175 million,” Schefter said. “And it then had a springing guarantee that could have brought the value of the contract, the guaranteed money in the contract, [up] to $200 million guaranteed. Those guarantees were way more than Kyler Murray got from Arizona and way more than Russell Wilson got from the Denver Broncos. Yes, those were the actual numbers and that was the situation.”

"The most talked-about move of the 2023 offseason has finally been completed, just days before the 2023 NFL draft: The Packers have traded Rodgers to the Jets."   :happy1: :happy1: :happy1: :happy1:

The compensation, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN, is the two teams swapping their first-round picks on Thursday night (the 13th pick to the Packers for the 15th pick to the Jets), the Packers getting a conditional 2024 pick that will be a first-rounder if Rodgers plays 65 percent of snaps and will otherwise be a second rounder, the Packers getting the 42nd and 207th pick in the 2023 draft, and the Jets getting the 170th pick in the 2023 draft.

Won't see him again except in the Super Bowl. Don't play the Jets for 4 more years. By then he should be toast.

The Lions are still the Lions.  :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :rotflmao: :bonk:

Lions' stunning pick of Alabama's Jahmyr Gibbs sends social media into frenzy (https://www.foxnews.com/sports/lions-stunning-pick-alabamas-jahmyr-gibbs-sends-social-media-frenzy)  :doah:

In recent seasons, teams have not been inclined to select running backs in the first round because of the upside other players have shown going later in the draft. But with the selection of Gibbs, two running backs went in the Top 12 with Bijan Robinson going to the Atlanta Falcons at No. 8 overall.

But that really wasn’t the reason why confusion was found on social media.

The Lions already have two veteran running backs on their roster in D’Andre Swift and free-agent signee David Montgomery
They have 5 picks in the first 60 or 70 overall draft selections and they burn their first one on a running back? When they already have two veteran RBs

Anybody who claims to know what the Vikings will do right now is just fooling themselves. They haven't played a game yet. Starters haven't played. Whoever named Flores as a great coach hasn't been proven right.
The distance from being a top team in the NFC and a bottom dweller for the Vikings is a injury to Cousins or Jefferson.

Only 4 carries for 7 yds yday, plus he had a fumble that they didn't get back. It's 13 for 33 yds for the season, he does have 3 catches for 26 yds. Breece Hall, their #1 RB, did have 127 yds on 10 carries on week 1 though.

Title: Re: NFL Stuff
Post by: Steve-o on September 09/18/23, 08:37:12 AM
I figure you need three things for a good run game.

#1 - Dominating offensive line.
#2 - A skilled running back.
#3 - A legitimate passing attack that defenses have to respect.

Sometimes an explosive running back can make up for what's lacking in the O line, turning small holes into huge gains.  Dalvin did that for a few seasons for the Vikes when he was healthy, but his explosiveness might be behind him.  So far Mattison hasn't demonstrated that ability either.

Those running plays must look great on paper, where any ol' back should be able to hit the holes, but if the line don't execute the blocks, ain't nothing goona happen.
Title: Re: NFL Stuff

Mattison hasn't gotten much of a chance yet this season either. So far this season he's only carried the ball 19 times for 62 yds along with 6 catches for 21 yds. He had a lost fumble in the Eagles game too, but they didn't get any points off it. Check the Fantasy Home section near the bottom of the page. https://www.espn.com/nfl/player/_/id/4048244/alexander-mattison

Some others had the same bet, but their odds were no-where near what FanDuel's were.  https://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2023/sep/19/fanduel-sportsbook-takes-20-million-wash-prop-bet-/

Sucks to be fanduel and lose on a bet like that, but just think about all the folks that are going to see that article and look to start on-line gambling.  Somethin' tell me it will all work out for them in the end.

If they paid out $20M, they took in $100K on the bet.  If they took in $100K on a silly prop bet about field goals, just think what the cashflow is for everything else.  The amount of money that must be flowing on-line thru those gambling apps must be staggering.

Bad News, Bears   :blues brothers:

Chicago Bears’ defensive coordinator Alan Williams is stepping down.

Per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Williams announced his resignation as the Bears’ DC “effective and immediately”, earlier this morning. In a statement that Rapoport shared, Williams said that he was stepping away to focus on his health and family.

In a stunning development on Wednesday, it was reported that FBI agents had raided Williams’ home and Halas Hall, though other reports indicated that the latter location was not raided.
Details about the reason behind the raiding of Williams’ home haven’t been revealed yet, but we’ll be sure to share more details as they become available.

Bears Cut Ties with QB Amid Dramatic Day for Organization (https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nfl/bears-cut-ties-with-qb-amid-dramatic-day-for-organization/ar-AA1h16Gk?ocid=entnewsntp&pc=U531&cvid=e09ce7d2e8ff438fa95d805855634e9c&ei=41)

Nathan Peterman is no longer a member of the organization after Chicago decided to cut ties with the third-string quarterback on Wednesday, September 20.  Peterman is now the second reserve quarterback with whom the Bears have parted ways in as many months.

Later, starting quarterback Justin Fields blamed the offensive coaching staff for his “robotic” and unsuccessful play to start the season before ultimately walking those comments back.

The Chicago Bears are trying to track down equipment that was stolen earlier this week at Soldier Field.  A Soldier Field manager said someone stole equipment, including gators and lawn mowers, from a parking structure at the NFL stadium.   The estimated loss is over $100,000.  It happened sometime overnight on Wednesday.  Staff said the thieves tore down a security fence to drive the equipment out of the garage.

I hope this isn't a trend...  NFL going "Hollywood."  I'm afraid it is bound to go that way.

NFL Fans React To What Patrick Mahomes Said About Taylor Swift (https://www.msn.com/en-us/sports/nfl/nfl-fans-react-to-what-patrick-mahomes-said-about-taylor-swift/ar-AA1hcsJ3?ocid=entnewsntp&cvid=c788b661c7cf409681e3e1e7fb7bb04f&ei=8#image=2)

Following the game, Mahomes was asked by Erin Andrews about Swift's appearance.  "I heard that she was in the house," Mahomes said. "I felt a little bit of pressure, I knew I had to get it to (Travis)...I think he wanted to get in the end zone just as much as all of the Swifties wanted him to."

NFL fans love the honesty.

"Andddd we're all in high school again," one fan wrote.  "I’m literally sitting here crying laughing what is going on I love it," one fan added.  "Idk if he’s the greatest QB of all time yet but he’s definitely the greatest bro of all-time," one fan added.

You don't think that Taylor Swift is aware that the cameras are on her 100% of the time.  Isn't that cute... Budding love...   :puke:

I don't think you could get local tribe leaders to agree either.   Just look at what the article says.  The claims made by the crack-pot Indian "leader" don't make sense.  He's just trying to get publicity and make a buck.

The Native American Guardians Association (NAGA) accuses the NFL franchise and new owner Josh Harris of defamation, civil conspiracy and civil rights violations for their role in suppressing Native American history, in a complaint filed in the United States District Court of North Dakota.

NAGA led a viral petition this summer demanding that the organization reclaim its traditional Redskins identity.

"Commanders is a fitting name for oppressors," the suit stated.

The group seeks $1.6 million in damages and "a seat at the table to share Native American history."

The new owner didn't oppress ANYONE.  He kowtowed to the woke mob, which wasn't the right thing to do according to this guy, and so now he is stirring the pot some more and trying to cash in.   :doah:

Lions could be legit.  They beat GB and the Vikes and continue to roll.

For years we've been saying "the Lions are the Lions and they always find a way to screw it up," BUT how many seasons do we find that the Vikings still split wins/losses with the Lions.  We should be kicking their butts, but always seem to play down to them.

NOW, the Lions do look legit, or certainly better than anyone else in the NFC North.

The Vikes might not be as bad as an 0-3 team this year, but last year they weren't as good as a 13-4 team last year either.

I'm callin' it...  The Lions WILL make the playoffs, the Vikings won't.  (Yeah, bold prediction now that the Lions are 3-1 and the Vikes are 0-3  :undecided:)

Cut out the news and do something useful with the time, I did.  Life's to short to listen everyday to things like city crime and what our mumbling president said today, that you can't do anything about.  When I see the mushroom clouds from my deer stand, ill figure it's over, if the good lord hasnt taken me by then :coffee:

Raiders are a dumpster fire.  Josh McDaniels is now a two-time loser as HC and the only non-interim coach to be fired TWICE before the end of his SECOND season.     Instead of taking a promising playoff team to the next level, those guys figured out how to derail the train - and now they are both gone.

Davante Adams trade rumors were running rampant, but he didn't get traded.  I don't have any clue if that is good or bad - just that they don't seem to be getting much out of him this year and he isn't happy.

They shipped his college buddy, Derek Carr, off to NO & now they don't have anyone that can get him the ball. Garoppolo is really stinkin it up this year, he was 10/21 on Monday night & got sacked 6 times.  Pretty sure he just lost the QB1 job too.

Jimmy G has 9 INTs & only 7 TDs & Adams has only 14 catches in his last 4 games. Not good for a guy who signed a 5yr/$140 million deal in 2022.

There are some QBs that just transcend...  make everyone around them better where ever they go.

But for most QBs, I'm starting to think that perceived success or failure has as much to do with coaching, scheme, game plan, and protection as it does with the QBs individual talent.  You put a good guy in a poor spot and his performance will suffer.  Football is the ultimate team game.

NFL Injuries: Daniel Jones 20th Player Sidelined Amid Debate Over Turf (https://www.forbes.com/sites/maryroeloffs/2023/11/06/nfl-injuries-daniel-jones-20th-player-sidelined-amid-debate-over-turf/?sh=5ce55f27261d)

New York Giants quarterback Daniel Jones became the latest NFL player to suffer a leg injury this season — after a likely season-ending Achilles tear for Aaron Rodgers and dramatic injuries to Nick Chubb and Kirk Cousins — as players and the league debate the safety of artificial turf.

I don't think they have a turf problem.  They have a shoe problem.  The players are going to wear the shoes that give them the maximum grip so they can continue to make their amazing athletic moves.  Maybe if they used some shoes that had a little slip in them, they wouldn't be quite as electric, but they might not sustain as many injuries either.  The NFL and the players all talk about safety, but the bottom line is, the better the players perform, the more money everyone makes.

It kind of reminds me of today's bigger, stronger golfers overpowering historic courses.  The PGA will do anything to "Tiger-proof" courses except regulate the technology of the ball - there is too much money in selling those balls to the public to NOT have the pros playing the same equipment.

Seems like only a few week back all the talking heads were saying how the Vikings had such an easy schedule the rest of the way.  Now that website says the Vikes have the 2nd hardest remaining schedule!!!

I know things change - which is the fun of the NFL - but the Vikes basically went .500 thru the easy part (losing very winnable games) and now it gets tough again.

Man, its lucky the Vikings ONLY needed to score 3 points to win that last game.   :puke:

Its easy for everyone to jump on the Manion bandwagon - especially those who wanted to dump Dobbs, but I think winning the next 4 games is going to be more complicated than just playing a new quarterback who has something to prove.

It all starts with blocking and a competent rush game, and it seems like guys got hurt last night in 3 of the 4 parts of the offense:  line, running back, and JJ hurt again.

That is a good way to look at it, and don't forget their 0-3 start.  I remember hearing that teams with bad starts like that only make the playoffs 2.5% of the time (since 1990).

It will be interesting to see what happens.  His best days are past him, but you never know what a man can do with a fresh start.

I heard that about a trade too.  It has been done before.  Brady made Bellichek.
Brady is a generational player who makes everyone better around him.  Bellichek benefited from that - no doubt.  And Bellichek was a good coach, but like all coaches, they have a shelf life in the NFL.  For whatever reason, their act wears thin and changes get made.  Bellichek had a longer run AND more success because of Brady for sure.

Even look at Mike Tomlinson in Pittsburg.  Everyone acknowledges his greatness as a coach, but that doesn't quell the grumblings of a losing season.  Rumors have him getting sacked, but who else would they get that would be better?

Tony Dungy did it best.  He got out while he was still on top.  :happy1:  Well done.

This is the best defense they have had in a real long time too, too bad so many on the other side of the ball have gotten hurt this season. Last year it seemed like it was just the opposite, as everybody in the secondary was on the IL at least a couple times.

I was running up and down the radio dial the other night and landed on KFAN.  They were doing a Vikings installment of Skol Stories where they were talking to some ex-Vikings defensive line coach, who I didn't recognize.  He was coach for Millard, Doleman, Randall et al.  He had talented guys AND he did a good job.

He said he was never happier than when he was coaching the defense.  When he got his crack at Head Coach (I don't know where) he said it didn't work out so good.  He was better at coaching football than managing everyone else's problems.  Its too bad more folks don't figure that out sooner.

In football, they take great coordinators and make them into average head coaches.
In industry, I've seen too many cases where they take good engineers and turn them into lousy managers.

Time will tell if Flores is a better coordinator or head coach.  But the NFL is a place where egos run high.

Due to the immense popularity and importance of this Gopher game I need to ask......is it 1 am or pm?

 I see where the officiating crew that did the Detroit/Dallas game are really catching some heat for blowing the 2 pt conversion call that could've gave Detroit the W. I read where they won't be doing any playoff games this season now. https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/columnist/bell/2023/12/31/nfl-refs-detroit-lions-penalty-brad-allen/72071819007/ They didn't do a very good job last night either IMO, not like that would've changed anything.

It was by mutual agreement, in fact he waived some of his contract so it was easier & cheaper for the Jets to let him go is what I read. He's hoping 1 of the playoff teams will pick him up on waivers. https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/dalvin-cook-jets-part-ways-top-five-landing-spots-as-four-time-pro-bowl-rb-could-join-playoff-contender/

Title: Re: NFL Stuff
Post by: Gunner55 on January 01/05/24, 02:10:08 PM
:tut: I know they're probably eveybodies SB favorite but I wouldn't bet the house on Ravens winning it all. They have playing really good & have won 6 in a row but they still have 4 more to play. So, that would be 10 in a row, which doesn't happen very often in today's NFL. Jackson runs 9 times a game too but it only takes 1 of those to go bad to ruin their season. :doah:
Title: Re: NFL Stuff
Post by: KEN W on January 01/05/24, 02:45:31 PM
Jackson won't play on Sunday. They have the No. 1 seed locked up. So they may not win.

Post by: Gunner55 on January 01/05/24, 06:02:10 PM
I agree Ken, but they're playing the Steelers & they hate the Steelers. Plus they have already lost to Tomlin once this year & they can end any hope the Steelers have of making the playoffs. If the Ravens can stop the run & score a few points it'll probably a long day for Pittsburgh IMO.

:tut: We are in the NFC North & they are in the AFC North. The Steelers have won 6 of the last 7 from the Ravens & 3 in a row in Baltimore. So, I think the Ravens will want to put an end to that & make sure there's no chance of 'em having to play the Steelers again in the playoffs.

 “Considering cord-cutting and the soft TV ad-sales market, I think they have no choice but to pursue streaming because that’s where the growth is gonna be," John Kosner, the president of digital media and sports consultancy Kosner Media, told USA TODAY Sports. "That’s where media companies are investing.”

NBC Sports president Rick Cordella said the window was presented as a streaming-only game as part of the new media rights deal that went into effect prior to this season. NBCUniversal put together a pitch for the Saturday night game to air on Peacock. That, plus a reported $110 million, was all it took for Peacock to score rights to a matchup that resulted in the No. 3 Kansas City Chiefs — "Swifties," meet "The Office" — and No. 6 Dolphins.

:scratch:Saturday night's Wild Card Round matchup between the Miami Dolphins and the Kansas City Chiefs, which streamed exclusively on Peacock, garnered historic viewing numbers.

The game was the most streamed event in U.S. history, drawing an audience of 23 million viewers.According to The Athletic's Mark Puleo and Richard Deitsch, last November's matchup between the Dallas Cowboys and Seattle Seahawks on Prime Video held the previous record for the most streamed NFL game at 15.26 million viewers.

Unfortunately for viewers, the game didn't offer much excitement after the first half. The Chiefs held a 16-7 lead heading into the half and piled on in the second half to win the game 26-7.
Sunday Night Football, which is typically on NBC, also streamed on Peacock this season, but Saturday's game marked the first playoff game exclusively on a streaming network.

Seeing how well the game did for Peacock, it may not be the last streaming-exclusive playoff game.  :pouty:

Title: Re: NFL Stuff

Sure it was a success...  for the NFL.  They got important data.  They might have not had the maximum number of viewers, but now they know how many they lost.  And if they do it again next year, they'll know if that number is trending up or down.

The other thing is, it isn't just the NFL.  Its also NBC/Peacock - as a network they are also trying to maximize the monetization of their broadcast channel plus streaming service.  And since they are partnered with the NFL, they're all motivated to make as much money as possible - even if it means impinging on 'free' access to viewers.

I don't think they'll ever stop tinkering to make more money:  streaming service access, over seas games, yadda, yadda, yadda.

The last game that was only available by streaming only had roughly 15.2 million viewers, which was then a record. So NBC/Peacock can look at it say, look the # of viewers is up. What they won't tell you is that the earlier game wasn't a playoff game. https://bleacherreport.com/articles/10105095-dolphins-chiefs-nfl-playoff-game-draws-23m-viewers-most-streamed-event-in-us-history

The problem is...  Right now the NFL is seemingly bullet proof as a money printing machine.

No matter what they do to it, they just seem to get more out of it.  And the more money they get out of it, the more they want to tweak it to get more.

Remember when prize fight boxing was one of the most popular sports; when all the biggest fights were free on network TV?  They F-ed it up when they switched to pay per view.  Now, mostly no one cares about boxing (even before MMA came along).

However, NFL has so much momentum (and times and technology have changed) that flirting with steaming services isn't going to amount to more than a dent in sports popularity or their revenue streams.

And in the end...  they WILL be making more money.

 Straight from a recent MSN article:While it's impossible to know what the NFL eventually will do, at some point the NFL will jeopardize its broadcast antitrust exemption if it puts too many playoff games on pay-only platforms.

Already, New York congressman Pat Ryan has suggested that House of Representatives explore the law that allows the league's teams to sell their TV rights collectively, based on the decision to stream a playoff game.

The NFL's push to streaming began in 2022, when the NFL moved Thursday Night Football from free on Fox to prime on Amazon. There wasn't much of an outcry over that. But this is a playoff game; for many, it represents the first step in something that could expand to more postseason contests.

That's up to the league. But the league should tread lightly. Without the broadcast antitrust exemption, the NFL would face significant liability if it forces networks that would prefer to purchase the right to televise only Cowboys home games to also take home games from all teams. Eventually, every team would do its own deal. And it would become very hard to hold the league together if one team is making $1 billion per year and another team is making $50 million per yea

I was thinking the same thing.  Sounds like something Jerry Jones and his buddies would be pushing for.

Maybe the NFL isn't bullet proof after all - is someone gets too greedy.

 It's an old case (2015) but there's been a recent ruling in another lawsuit on the NFL's broadcast rights. Jan 12 (Reuters) - The National Football League must face a multibillion-dollar trial in February over the distribution of its exclusive “Sunday Ticket” telecast package of games, after a U.S. judge on Thursday declined to throw out the class-action case.
Los Angeles-based U.S. District Judge Philip Gutierrez ruled, opens new tab that a nationwide class of residential and commercial Sunday Ticket subscribers can move ahead with claims that the NFL long has curbed competition for the sale of game telecasts.Sunday Ticket, previously available on DirecTV but now carried by Google’s YouTube TV, provides out-of-market games that are not otherwise available for free in local markets on CBS or Fox networks. Google and DirecTV are not defendants.
The plaintiffs contend that the NFL's business deal for distributing the package has artificially inflated its price, in violation of U.S. antitrust law.
Gutierrez’s ruling rejecting the NFL's bid for summary judgment paves the way for a Feb. 22 trial, where alleged damages have been estimated at $6 billion. The commercial plaintiffs include bars, hotels and restaurants.

Lots of chirping by the Packer fans again after not being able to find them prior to week 15 with a search team of St. Bernards. They closed the season well but despite that weren't they like 10-9 for the whole year? Last year the Vikings had a good record and the wheels fell off this year for them. If Cousins stays with the Vikings the Packers are no closer to the Belichick Super Bowl Trophy than the Vikings.

As a final thought on this post... weren't the Green Bush fans calling for the head coach & d-coordinator to be fired DURING the season?

It's hard not to like how he plays but he his new deal was right there with Mahomes' when he signed it back in August of 2021. Not sure he could've got that here. Josh Allen and the Bills have agreed to a six-year contract extension through 2028, the team announced Friday.

The total value of the deal is $258 million, according to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, who reported on Inside Training Camp Live that it will average $43 million per year, with more than 50% of the money guaranteed. Allen receives $150 million in total guarantees and $100 million fully guaranteed upon signing, which are each the highest in NFL history.
With all the incentives it could be worth $288 mil.

As a fan, I like to see the GM have as much flexibility with contracts and salary cap as possible to be able to make the team better.

No agent involved in Lamar Jackson's new $260 mil/5 yr deal as he's never had 1 & the Ravens are most people's pick to win it all. They have been very good in the draft though as 1/2 their starters have came since the 2020 draft.

My point was I haven't read anything from the Vikings or Wilfs that they expect a hometown discount. As far as I can tell it's just the fans that think Cousins should take a hometown discount. Again, I don't expect him to give one nor do I think he should. I think he should be paid whatever the market will bare.

He was never going to get that kind of money or a 4-year deal here. :tut:
It looks like he got $140M of that $180M guaranteed in the first two years.  That is a big chunk of change.

I'm trying to figure all that out, how they must be converting salary into signing bonus.
-so he averages $45M/season = $180M
-first two seasons fully guaranteed $45M + $45M = $90M
-$50M signing bonus
-90 + 50 = $140M
-$180M - $140M = $40M

So does that mean Kapt. Kirk will "only" be making $20M per season in the last two years of the deal?   He still gets paid a pile and won't lose much if his performance falls of and they cut him in year 3 or 4.

Not that it matters a hill of beans to anyone except Cousins and the Falcons and now their fans.   :coffee:

Kirk might not have won a superbowl, but he keeps on betting on himself and winning.

If you look at the highest career earnings for a QB, only Aaron Rodgers tops Kapt. Kirk.

Rodgers = $342.5M
Cousins = $331.5M
Stafford = $328M
Wilson = $256.4M

The only fools are the players who don't invest their salaries wisely.

Everyone else is making life-changing money hand-over-fist and smiling all they way to the bank - especially the owners.

So, in your opinion, there is no reasonable limit to what they pay a player?
Title: Re: NFL Stuff
Post by: Steve-o on March 03/11/24, 08:46:13 PM
My point is, the reasonable limit, agreed to by the owners and players association, is the salary cap.  And it is up to teams and player's agent to figure out how much of the pie each player gets.

So what if a GM overpays a guy who underperforms.  It happens all the time.  Bad contracts eventually expire.  Dead cap space money eventually comes off the books.  Owner makes money every year.  Players get all the money they were able to negotiate for.  18 teams don't make the playoffs.  31 teams don't win the Superbowl.  A few players, coaches or team managers retire on their own terms, but most of them eventually get cut or fired.

All I see is billionaire owners and millionaire players all enjoying the "American Way", earning live-changing Monopoly money paid for by the fans, advertising contracts, most recently - gambling partnerships, and government subsidized stadiums.

So, who are the fools and their money?

I'm just glad the Vikes didn't chase Fields as their bridge QB.

And I can't say I'm any more pleased about the Darnold signing, but at the same time, they've been ignoring the QB2 position for years.  Maybe Darnold turns into that if they can draft a new hotshot who is ready to play.
Title: Re: NFL Stuff

Couldn't agree more on both counts.  I just didn't have any interest in Fields.  I also am curious to see what KOC can do with Darnold.  I may have already have said this but some sports guys were talking about Darnold and said that the worst thing that could have happened was to go to the Jets.  Said the trainers and coaches did nothing to help his QB education.  He came into the league young too.  SO he is only 26 and has a few years of being around.  That may work in his favor too.

My personal opinion is there no quarterbacks including Williams in this years draft that will be ready to start this year. Teams that are drafting high all are losing teams who have many holes to fill. Why have your quarterback get gun shy and learn bad habits trying not to get killed the first year? Let them sit, get use to the speed of the game, watch & learn. Losing the year for contract reasons doesn't matter......Fields is proof of that. If the kid isn't ready after 5 years trade him or cut him loose.

Thats why, for all of those reasons and more, finding your starting QB in the first round of the draft has always been a 50-50 proposition.
Title: Re: NFL Stuff
Post by: LPS on March 03/17/24, 03:28:57 PM
And 50 -50 is pretty good odds actually.  Remember Stafford his first few years with Detroit?  He got the ever living snot beat out of him.  Every game with us he just got destroyed.  I actually felt bad for him and didn't think he would make it 5 years.  Well he hung in there and deserved to win a Super Bowl.  Not many people will put up with a beating like that but he did.  NOT the way to bring a kid into the NFL.  WE need to be vastly improving our Oline too.  Watched a comparison of McCarthy to Mayes.  McCarthy was much better under pressure.  They graded both and Mayes was a little better when not under pressure.   My vote is for McCarthy cuz there will be pressure.  LOL

I agree, db, it is almost always best if the rookie QB can sit for the 1st year. But look what C. J. Stroud did this year & not many thought he would jump right in & start, either. To be fair to Fields, having 2 different head coaches & 2 different offensive coordinators in his 3 seasons with the Bears did little to help him improve as well. The change of scenery may be all he needs, we shall see.

I agree with Fields. Backing up Wilson will be the best thing to happen to him if he buys in. However, it won't change my opinion of him as a quarterback. I just don't think he is that good. I think he was just surrounded by so much talent at Ohio State. We will see what happens.

 I did find this: Prior to getting traded to the Steelers, a number of teams were reported to have made inquiries about Fields, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport.
However, Fields did not want to go to any of those teams, and he was only interested in being traded to the Steelers.

There are no official reports at this time about the specific teams that asked about Fields, but there are several teams that are not thrilled with their quarterback situations. Those teams include the New England Patriots, New York Giants and Las Vegas Raiders. Additionally, the Eagles traded for Kenny Pickett shortly after the Steelers signed Russell Wilson, so Philadelphia could have been interested in Fields prior to making that deal.

I didn't realize that underwhelming QBs still on their rookie deal could call their own shots.

But putting my inherent cynicism aside...  I'm just glad Fields will get another opportunity.  In the end you just want to see people succeed - in all the various ways that is measured.  So often a player perceived productivity is a function of his circumstances.  Football is - after all - the ultimate team game.

NFL owners mulling over new Kick off rules today.....

The kicker would continue to kick from the 35-yard line, but the other 10 players would line up at the receiving team's 40-yard line. At least nine members of the return team would line up in a "setup zone" between the 35- and 30-yard line. Up to two returners can line up in a "landing zone" between the goal line and the 20-yard line. No one other than the kicker and returner(s) can move until the ball hits the ground or a player inside the landing zone. Touchbacks would be marked at the 35-yard line, and no fair catches would be allowed.

In the event a team wants to attempt an onside kick, it would have to inform officials of its intent and would then be allowed to use the NFL's traditional formation. No surprise onside kicks would be allowed.

Also    could be new this coming season.....

Meanwhile, the committee's attempt to eliminate the hip-drop tackles -- a dangerous technique that often results in lower body injuries -- requires officials to note two actions: If a defender "grabs the runner with both hands or wraps the runner with both arms," according to the wording of the proposal and also "unweights himself by swiveling and dropping his hips and/or lower body, landing on and trapping the runner's leg(s) at or below the knee."

The kickoff proposal would be the most significant on-field rule change for the NFL in years and is designed to reverse more than a decade of declining return rates while also lowering concussion rates. In essence, the committee's proposal would move the majority of the kicking and return teams downfield to minimize high-speed collisions.

Sounds like a very good idea. Basically just moving the blocking and tackling players closer together. :happy1:

Get rid of the kick-offs altogether. Let the offense start at the 20 yard line. Lets give the game some semblance of defense. Also mover the goal post closer together. Make extra points and field goals a bit tougher.
Title: Re: NFL Stuff

Interesting idea of moving the goal posts closer together to make kicks more difficult. Would probably have coaches going for it on 4th down more often instead of trying a 50+ yd field goal. :happy1:
Title: Re: NFL Stuff

NFL likes offense, but offense means points.

Metrics are already telling coaches to go on 4th more often, I don't think you need to move the posts to achieve that.  Moving posts would take points off the board, and I don't think they want to do that.

Football is a physical sport. Let's keep it that way. Unfortunately sometimes in a physical sport players get injured. Just the way it is. The more the NFL pussifies the game the less I want to watch it. Might have to start watching rugby where the actually hit each other. Maybe the new kick off rule will create more returns. New NFL Rules Require Opposing Teams To Just Hug It Out TheBee (https://babylonbee.com/news/new-nfl-rules-require-opposing-teams-to-just-hug-it-out)  ;)

NEW YORK, NY — Football fans were left confused and frustrated after news broke that new NFL rules will require opposing teams to just hug it out rather than engage in hitting, tackling, or playing football.

The new rules, officially approved and adopted by the league this week, will limit physical contact between opposing players to gentle, caring hugs in an effort to eliminate any risk of injury.

"This is the future of the game," said NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell. "It has been our mission for many years now to reduce the chances of our players suffering physical injuries. That long journey has now led us to this historic moment. Loving, compassionate hugs will now be the cornerstone of the National Football League."

Early reactions from players were mixed. "I don't know," said Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones. "I got into football for the physicality, not for hugs. We'll see how much it changes the game, I guess." Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, however, expressed support for the changes. "I'm all for it," he said. "Now, whenever I get sacked, it'll be nice to be gently laid down in someone's warm embrace instead of being violently slammed to the ground by a 300-pound man. Maybe now I can make it through a season without getting hurt."

At publishing time, despite disappointment expressed by fans nationwide, analysts predicted that every NFL player would now get to experience the same type of football Tom Brady enjoyed for so long, with minimal physical contact allowed.

Right now looks like Williams will go number 1 to Da Bears.

Next three are McCarthy, Maye, and Daniels. No one knows in what order.

Bears, Commanders, and Patriots all need QB"s.

Next are the Cardinals and then the Chargers. They don't need QB's so will one of them trade down to let another move up to get the 1 that is still left???That's where the Vikings will most likely trade up to. But other teams like Denver want a QB also.

Not much info is leaking out as to what will happen. Talking heads are just guessing.
