If I recall correctly from last year, they got those results out fairly quickly after the lottery closed.  I think they use a computer now instead of ping pong balls like they did for years and years.

Good reminder about carcass movement restrictions in CWD management zones on the main page this week.

With so many CWD Management Zones popping up all over the state, it will be a huge pain-in-the-  :moon: for those hunters who live outside those zones to hunt within them if they can't take their meat home without first deboning it.

Depending on how our hunt goes in our respective areas, as I'm planning on staying up all week, I may try the 679 area as that's not far from us.

The DNR sent out an email, as I understand it for that area I could quarter it and tahe it out as long as I leave the head and spine??

It gets worse.  Read this on the DNR Website!

If you are in a surveillance, management, or control zone, sampling is mandatory opening weekend of the gun season.

In addition to getting your deer sampled, you will need to know the Public Land Survey (PLS) number of the location where you harvested the deer.  The DNR Website has instructions on how to get this from the MN DNR Website Recreation Compass.

So if you know where you plan to hunt, best figure out what this number is ahead of time.  The lines were extremely long and slow last time there was mandatory sampling.  Can you imagine how much longer this will take if everyone has to find their own PLS number?   :doah:

Here are the requirements for each CWD zone classification.

https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/cwd/surveillance-zone.html (https://www.dnr.state.mn.us/cwd/surveillance-zone.html)

:pouty:  so friggin confusing. I did an in-depth research mission this morning. I may hunt that 679 zone if everything works out. I got the impression after the first weekend I only would have to have it tested opening weekend after that it was voluntary. And that I could also take the whole carcass to talmoon but as far as I can see talmoon isn't even listed as a test station??
Title: Re: 2022 deer season
Post by: Steve-o on October 10/12/22, 01:19:41 PM
Talmoon looks to be right on the border between 169 and 679, yes?

679 is a Management Zone and 169 (west of Hwy 6) is a Surveillance zone - so it depends on where you are taking it.

Hunters are allowed to move whole deer carcasses in between contiguous management zone DPAs or from a control zone DPA into the management zone.

You can move a carcass between two Management Zones, but it doesn't say you can move it from a Management to Surveillance Zone.  So no going from 679 to 169 without first breaking it down and leaving the spine in 679.

I sure do hope the DNR has more testing sites than the ones currently listed on the website.

yes........its the northern, most western corner.

but it doesnt say i cant either. first i need to get a deer in that zone. my problem is talmoon isnt listed as a test sitr....not even the first weekend. the way i see it i'd have to take it to the forest service station in deer river to get it tested....... if there staffed there during the week and after dark????????/

my only other otion is to 1/4 it and then bring it back to the cabin.....it'll suck but doable. i usually pick the rib cage apart to but will need to leave it lay i guess!!1

i  jusr wonder exactly how close there going to watch this?????? i mean as i understand it they found 2 or 3 deer in the town of grand rapids with the CWD??????/

Probably just Saturday and Sunday.  That seems to be all that is required.

But much of the organization seems ad hoc.  It wouldn't surprise me either if stations were manned on Monday as well - depending on the volume of samples and staffing/volunteers.

i did read after that first weekend i could, if i did shoot a deer in the 679 zone i could transport the whole deer to talmoon so.......not sure.

so ithink i came up with a game plan. IF i do hunt inthat zone..........i'll more than likely have my 4 wheeler with. it has a wench, i'll just hang it from a tree......quater it and move along!!!!!!!

Yeah, I know it is a PITA, but there is something to be said for getting your deer tested.

A) we do need to know how the disease is spreading, and

B) since it is spreading, I'd like to know if MY deer has it or not.

It is only a matter of time until it is everywhere and it will become routine to have your deer sampled before you eat it.

My biggest problem with the DNR is all the draconian regulations regarding carcass transport.  It was unregulated live deer transport between deer farms that spread the disease in the first place.

i did talk to a buddy of mine last night that is really good friends with one of the wardens up there, and his neighbor......i got the impression that there not to gung ho on this testing/rules, especially along the border of this 679 zone!!!!!!

I got a PM last night from my brother that a nice buck walked right under my stand yesterday morning.  He knew I wasn't there and one of the others saw it but didn't want to shoot because he thought I might be in my stand.  Those bucks are smart.  Just my luck too.  They never walk anywhere near me when I am in my stand.  LOL!!!

OMG. You’d never guess it…I missed a nice buck. I saw one deer all day. A nice buck came out around 3:30 trotting through some thickets. Rushed the shot at 70 yards. Horrible feeling knowing that may be the only opportunity I get. Last time I missed was in 2005.

A lot more shooting today. I set up in a new area as I grid searched the bejeezus out of my other area.

I did see a massive fisher. Very cool to see…almost thought it was a cub at first. HUGE.

was one of the worst years we've had for deer hunting i can ever remember. 5 guys.......2 hunt one direction 3 go another. between the 5 of us i was the only one to see a deer...and it was a fawn and i didnt shoot it.

neither one of our groups never seen a deer going to the area we hunt in the morning or evening driving back. that wind sunday sent me out of the woods early.......it was damn dangerous with trees crashing. even knocked out power to the cabin.

CWD detected near Bemidji.

With preliminary test results indicating the first suspected case of chronic wasting disease in the Bemidji area, hunters who harvest deer in deer permit areas 184 and the western portions 110, 169 and 197 are encouraged to use the self-service sampling stations listed below so their deer can be tested for CWD.

The adult male was harvested opening weekend of the firearms season about ten miles south of Bemidji in deer permit area 184. Final test results are expected later this week.

Great, another zone they can rope off and start the slaughter next year cuz a deer had the sniffles!  :bonk:

Technically, two months from now will be "next year," but it sounds like said slaughter could be coming sooner than you think.   ;)

This quote also from that same linked page...

If the preliminary test is confirmed, the DNR will take additional management actions per the department's CWD response plan, which may include late special season hunting and targeted culling.

How come the woofs don't get CWD from eating infected deer?     Wait...

How about a comprehensive state-wide study to look for incidents of CWD in wolves.

Well first evening in. Took a drive to see what I might encounter in the morning. 4 sets of fresh tracks after I drove in. :pouty: seen one of them, a fawn. Thinking I will be dealing with nocturnal deer,

You seein' any other tracks, poop, beds?  This is a great time to hunt with just a few days of snow on the ground.

I like to walk around and see where they've been.  Plus, it is easier to see 'em further in the distance against the white background if you jump 'em.

But when all that snow is stickin to the branches, and the brush is thick, it can make it harder to spot deer in the distance.

They are sure nocturnal up here. I have one daytime picture of a deer on my trailcams. All the rest are in the dark.

Steveo since I'm up here by myself I tend not to go venturing far from my normal paths. I don't want to have to physically drag a deer real far that I can't get my wheeler to.espcially when I'm alone. I've got 2 sets of tracks 10 steps from my stand.

I'm seeing tracks and I'm certain they are made at night. Just based on what I've seen the past 24 hours.

Just got to my stand.  Looks like the deer have had a party around my stand.  It's an oak ridge next to a cedar swamp.  Going to sit until dark unless my son shoots one out of the barn.

Seen 5 this afternoon all does and fawns and all after dark and not in my permit zone.

There talking wind chill below zero tomorrow. Currently enjoying a vodka and OJ contemplating my strategy that may include heading home.

Beautiful buck!!!!!! Nice picture.   Find a nice background today and get a few great daylight pictures.  Have the photographer try to take pictures upward.  Try a lot of different angles.  Take lots of pictures.  Easy to delete later.

Just talked to my wife. I guess my BIL got lucky Friday night!! And neither of the lucky you guys might think

Apparently he shot at a deer with the muzzleloader, grazed it, reshoot at it and from what I understand the gun kicked back,. He ended up in the ER. HAD a broken nose fractured cheek bone and 2 black eyes.

talked to a buddy that got out there shortly after the BIL got back from the hospital......yep he scoped himself. guess he shot at a deer, it dropped, then got up so he quick shot again, he figured he didnt get the gun properly up against the shoulder and popped himself pretty good. buddy figures at least one black eye maybe 2. i got the impression he tore up his nose pretty good.

i got my answer..........interesting to say the least. along with alot of garbly goop about how to improve the deer herds......

in 2021 175 adult female were taken in permit area 169. in 197, which is the leech lake reservation, that we share with the tribe  :surrender: 171 adult females where taken.

so far in 2022 with muzzy and archery still open, both 169 and 197 both had 173 adult females taken!!!!!
Title: Re: 2022 deer season
Post by: Steve-o on December 12/07/22, 08:50:00 AM
There were 500 antlerless permits in 197 and only 250 for 169 - 750 total.

If there were only 173 antlerless taken, that is only a 23% success rate - for DOES during RIFLE season!   :embarrassed:

(That number is probably pretty close, because if they explicitly told you 173 adult females were tagged, there could have been more tagged that were male or female fawns - I think they track those separately.  And some of the does might have been archery or muzzy kills, which do not require an antlerless permit, but those numbers are usually pretty low to negligible up there.)

That is a lot of land area to only harvest 173 adult female deer.  It is only 1 doe take for every 11 square miles!!!  :doah:  (And that is subtracting off the area for Leech Lake.)

I think the take-away is, there ain't many deer up there to shoot.
