Here are a few things that can make boating a few slabs this spring easier Just my take after a few years of targeting these fish

Feel free to add to this list !!!!

A black crappie will typically have seven or eight spines

A white crappie will typically have five or six spiny rays in the dorsal fin.

Spawning occurs as the water temps range from 64 degrees to 68 degrees F. In Minnesota this is around May or June but can vary depending on the lake and weather.
Darker water warm faster than clear waters

Most crappie spawn in 2'-10' of water . Bigger fish tend to spawn first and in deeper water than smaller fish

They will begin to move shallow when water temps get around 58 degrees

Bigger fish tend to spawn first and in deeper water than smaller fish

A Cold front will stop the spawn or shallow water migration. Look to the first break to catch these fish

Crappies prefer gravel bottoms but will spawn on mud or clay bottoms

Dark muddy bottoms are the first protected bays to warm up. Deep water in these bays make them more attractive

Downsizing bait size is important during cold fronts. Keep the ice jigs handy

Jigging (with ice fishing spoons) is still an effective way to fish from a boat during the pre spawn phase. This can be an effective way to target the fish at the first break line
