Wasp Traps

HELP! My backyard has been overtaken by wasps and what appear to be yellow jackets - to the point we're not comfortable being outside. I looked everywhere, and can't find a nest. I've read about a wasp trap you can make at home using a 2-liter bottle (essentially cutting the top off and flipping it over like a funnel back into the base of the bottle and inserting some bait). Has anyone tried this with any success, or does anyone have any other solutions I should try?

I've never tried the bottle method, however I did buy some traps at Ace Hardware.  I put a cotton ball in it, then soaked it with some Kool-aid.  Works like a charm!  You can use jelly or anything sweet for "bait".  The little buzzzz-ards go in...but can't get out!

bottle trick works well, i use a 20oz bottle when wasps are bugging we at work, i am a carpenter and work outside around them more than i like some times.  just cut top off and flip it upside down in the bottom. pop, cool aid, sugar water all work great

Thanks mncowboy!  I found a picture to give folks an idea what this looks like.  (I wished I knew this before I spent money on my traps)


Things You’ll Need:
Scissors
1 (2 L) plastic soda bottle
Stapler and staples
Hole punch
String or wire
Bait (vodka and orange juice, melon rind, jelly, molasses, honey or soda)

Step1
Cut off the top of a 2 L plastic soda bottle just where the plastic straightens out into the body. Make sure to make an even cut, as you will need both pieces to make your wasp trap.
Step2
Flip over the cut off bottle top and place it inside of the lower half of the bottle like a funnel. Add four or five staples around the top of the bottle to hold the two pieces firmly together.
Step3
Use a hole punch to make two centered holes in the top of the wasp trap and then tie a piece of string or twist a piece of wire into the holes to hang your trap.
Step4
Add your wasp bait to the trap and hang near the problem area. For best results, use more than one trap spaced around your yard. Suitable bait includes vodka and orange juice, melon rind, jelly, molasses, honey or even soda. The wasps will then enter the trap, but will not be able to get out.
