Does anybody else find the map useful?

I used to use these maps and data when I was a rookie Pheasant hunter, so I do believe that they are useful to some. Now I know where to go from experience......

I know of one spot in a supposedly very poor area, I returned to it this year, and finally got one. 

I was starting to wonder how reliable the road counts were.  Unless they were all done at the same time and same whether, I guess not very reliable.

I dug into the road counts a while back and they are accurate to to an extent but not a 100% good judge of the numbers because the elements can play a huge role.

They are done at the same time, date etc. and the routes are the same. When Sharon Geotz oversaw this I e-mailed her a bunch and got the raw counts.

The maps do reflect the road counts but just because a county is in the brown (good) does not mean that the whole county is good. There may just be two routes that were very good. The county I spend most of my time in is all brown but the is only small pods that are truly good. A lot of people do not like to road hunt but I like to in the mornings and in the evenings. This is a good time to be on the move because you will see where the birds are moving. This is your chance to see 20 roosters sitting on the side of a corn field coming out to roost. That right there tells you there are a lot of birds in the area dn maybe you should try and get permission or find a close wma. I love pheasant hunting!

Its just like the drumming counts for ruffed grouse, its a method that gives ya a general # to compare past years #'s to get a rough comparison, but as with grouse drumming counts, which are basically using #'s of male grouse (they are the ones that drum...) to get a average population estimation, it doesnt tell ya anything about how the springs hatch made out, and ya dont really find out till the next year when you see if there is more drumming than the last year/more #'s of pheasnts in the ditches... kind of like politcal polls, they're polling a very small slice of the population and you wonder where and who is getting polled, and how the pollers are deciding who gets polled.... but with the birds, its a barometer to compare to, from season to season....

Attached you will find county-level pheasant information.  Please understand that the survey was designed at the regional level and was never meant to act as an index of pheasant populations at the county-level.  Sample size (1-4 routes per county) is too small to capture adequate information by county.  Please interpret the data with caution.
