I bought a 870 Wingmaster that had camo tape on it for about 10 years. I got all the tape off but the adhesive is nasty. I've tried soap & water, goo gone and WD40. It doesn't seem to penetrate it. Anyone know how to get it off without really messing up the blue. There is some pitting here and there so it's not like it's perfect, but I would like to salvage the looks as best as I can.
I bought it right and knew the downside. The wood is still nice and cleans up well.

i would try paint thinner aka mineral spirits, worse case you could
try a 3M product called adhesive and decal remover. it is available
at auto parts stores. but it will ruin plastic material.

if you do manage to get it off and mess up the blueing just get some blueing remover and reblue it your self.

Use goof off. It is in a yellow can or bottle. Small 4oz. cans are carded and available at Menards. If you are already pitted you can't really harm anything with this. Just keep her oiled well after. And of course test in a small area. THE

methyl chloride paint stripper. Sold as Zip-Strip at pain shoppe, otherwise Wal-Mart sold as "Aircraft Remover" Double check in the mazagine tube beneathe the forearm to ake sure safe on bluing. We us this on the Cessna 182 to take pain off to bare metal. You could try 3M safety stripper, but water based and works slow. Otherwise, I have 0000 pure bronze wool which I squirt Flitz polish from Germany upon and rub out damned near anything off a blue job.

Thank you all for the advice. I'll try beginning with goof off and thinner and work my way up if needed. I'll post the results when I finish about what worked best for me.

Thanks again

I finally worked on this gun for a bit. I had a can of Goof-Off so I used it. It worked pretty well. I had to cover the same areas a few times to get thru to the metal. It didn't seem to bother the finish. I started on the barrel and have it about done. There are pitted areas from being covered in tape so I'll just have a good brush gun that I wont have to fuss over. I'll probably pick one of the other suggestions above when I resume and report the results. I'd rate Goof-Off about a 7 out of 10.
Thanks again.
