I know what they are & what they are for...They have been around for thousands of years....
Using them increases the "leverage" in throwing. Much like a lever to pry something open..I'm not going to go into the "dynamics" here, since many folks have no idea what you are talking about....

I am amused, since you brought this up....Since there isn't any "defined" use for them in hunting in The U.S. as far as I know...

 Feel free to be a "trend-setter" & start a new sport. ;)

For those than don't know what an Atlatl is:

http://www.atlatl.com/

There is pictures and video showing how to use one.

It wasn't too long ago there was a show on one the "man channels" (Discovery, History, National Geographic) about Atlatls...pretty cool to say the least!

It is real simple just hang out in a tree with a GOOD trail under it when a deer walks under me just drop out of tree with my vary sharp knife. Can't call it new and dont know if I will live throught it. Life hasnt killed me yet!

if im not mistaken........ATLATLS ....were outlawed in minnesota several years ago..and the reason........a guy made one out of aluminum tent poles and a sharpened boat prop.....and actually speared a black bear from a platform stand just outside brimson minnesota during the bear season with a valid bear tag over a bait pile......but i seem to recall the mn dnr threw a dagger in this spearing big game concept.........
