i have got an 04 16.6 fish hawk with a 75 merc. 4 stork and a 9.9 merc. kicker with the gear reduction and a minkaota trolling motor on it

so here is the problem i love to going trolling now when you are trolling you spend a lot of time in waves but at low speeds like trolling i can now keep the boat going strat the wind just blows the bow around if i use the kicker but if i try te big motor i can not get to go as slow as i would like

so here are my options

1 use the kicker but do the drift sock over the bow and under the boat to slow me down to my speed that i want but i have never tried that and am now sure how to rig that up

2 use the kicker and lock it in going straight and use the trolling motor to steer but someone told me that it is not good on the trolling motor to leave it down when you are not using it to drive you

3 back trolling my back end sets really low in the water because of the 2 4 stroks hanging off the back of it and i already have splash gards on it ....it dose not steer very good in back words

4 idk ?

any ideas would be nice and thanks for your help and Pdogg if I could get a Warrior I would !lol

#2 is my cure for this situation.  I don't see why that would hurt the trolling motor?

Get a trolling plate for your 75 hp Merc.  That will slow it down.

well pdog the person told me that if you are not using the trolling motor to drive you it will spin when it is not running and he said that was not good for it ....i don't think he knows a lot about trolling motors that why i ?s it

and jeff i thought a tolling plat was just for back trolling ? .....and i would like to use to kicker take time off the big motor and save gas but idk ....

I'm confused, do you go to fast with the kicker or with the big motor. 9.9 you should be able to troll it down well enough to maintain a slow speed. Doing this I don't see why you couldn't just do that. I don't know why it would affect the trolling motor to stear the boat, contact tha manufactuer and ask them. What size trolling motor do you have? I have a 24 volt and it handles my 16.6' Alumacraft pretty good. If there's a lot of waves or current, then I use my 75 HP with a drift sock on the front and that slows me down pretty well.
Friends are like buttcheeks..........crap might separate them, but they come together in the end.

getting it to go the right speed is not the problem  but the wind will really blow it around the little kicker dose not move enough water in wind to really steer it good  even with the big motor down ......so the big thing is just keeping the boat going the same way when it is windy ..... but with the the 75 gos to fast ......so steering it is the real problem ....let me add that i troll really slow ...i like to pull spinners a lot i like to go slow ...... :fishing2:.....well some times fast to lol depends

using the front trolling motor to steer the boat and using the kicker to power the boat at the same time is a good option. if it is a cable drive trolling motor, this will not work, you need a auto pilot type unit to do that. if you want to use the big motor to troll, you can use 2 small trolling bags off each side of the boat or do what i do, i use 2 5gal buckets off of each side. they work great, and when you forget to bring them back in the boat when you hit the throttle, the handles pull out and the buckets flote. you just pick them up and reattach the handles.

Mike if you are pulling spinners y would you not just use the trolling motor and not mess with the motors? if you know anything about catching fish concistantly with spinners you are rarely over 1.5 mph ! It's a 16 foot boat aluminum , so not very heavy. that trolling motor should work just fine ! And should last all day!

its not aluminuim and it is very heavy  ofr its size .....sometimes i pull spiners at 2.5 or so depends on what the fish like that day ....but like you said for spiners most of the time i do use the trolling motor
