Kabetogama/Namakan Fishing Report May 3, 2009

Here at Kabetogama our wishes were answered, the ice was off the lake for all intent and purposes on May 1st, that's unofficial, but who cares the ice is gone.

Early reports on May 2nd from crappie enthusiasts was not encouraging, few bites, but now steady action.

Water temperatures a steady 40 degrees on the main lake, after today, Sunday, I suspect temps to be low 40's, that equals spawning time.

Water levels on Kabetogama are at a good average, all docks useable, looks like a good opener forecast.

Expect to find walleyes in shallow water, somewhere between 5-12', jig and minnow tossed into the shallows with a slow retrieve is a good start.

If shiners are available you might also try jig and minnow around 25-30' deep outside some of the shallow bays or shorelines.

Wind direction will be important where bait fish pile up, expect to find hungry walleyes in those waters.

On the west end of Kabetogama try the ever popular Tom Cod Bay, Sucker Creek, Clyde Creek and each side of the Sugarbush channel depending on wind.

Please be careful while handling spawning females they are the lakes future and Good Luck To All,

See you later this week,
 Phil and Ellen Hart
