Early bow season.1/4 mile across thick wet swamp behind you and a field in front of you. Doe comes out of the swamp and detects you in your stand 20 yards away. She turns back towards the swamp and presents you with this shot. Do you shoot or not?

a quartering away shot i will absolutely take. wont shoot until she looks away though. cause if she knows your there, there might be a chance of her jumping the arrow.

At 20 yards she is showing alot of vitals in that shot If she can navigate the swamp it cannot be that bad and the grass doesn't look that tall to me. Done deer for me unless the cattails in front of her are six feet or better. If that is the case she walks away. You can't even find yourself in the big catts.

:offtopic: (slightly) Is it possible to "instantly" kill a deer with a bow? I mean can you drop it where it stands with a bow? If so it shouldn't be that hard to find it.  :archery:

I would shoot.  There isn't snow on the ground and it looks warm.  I'm not made of sugar and not afraid of getting wet.  A good shot and there wouldn't be much trouble tracking in the big swamp.  If it were cold and the swamp wasn't frozen solid I might think a little bit if I didn't have waders in  the truck.

drummer you can drop a deer with a bow, but it dont always happen. its very unlikely.

i also agree with kenhuntin if theres lots of tall cattails forget it. had a duck fall in cattails one time and i thought i had a good mark on it, everything looks the same in them, you get lost.

im with dakids, nothing wrong with getting a little wet.

From your description it sounds like the swamp is behind you.  Her looking back usually indcates something following here. Being it's early bow season, I suspect it's her fawn and not a buck.  If you shoot her in this position she will most likely take of straight ahead into the field.  I doubt she would double back to the swamp.

If it had horns I'd take the shot.  Sorry but the little ladies get a free pass in my book.

I'd pass...early bow season, she knows something's up. Let her go for now, and be still. May pop back out in the field proper, seen it before.

I would drop her. Thats what bonus tags are for. Never leave home with out two. I am all for getting wet and taking a good doe  any time of season. Just as long as it is a good shot.

I would have to wait and see if she will turn and give me a broadside shot or at least a less severe quartering away shot. If she didn't then she gets to walk.

Throw one in the breadbasket and she's not going far.

Man, only a few weeks to go to legally hammer one of these tag fillers!
