Anybody shoot any grouse this weekend?

 The boys(Charlie and Nolan) each bagged a bird yesterday afternoon.

 I'll try for a walk later today and see if I can show'em how it's done

Anybody shoot any birds so far?

Heading up to Grand Rapids on Friday afternoon, hopefully have that first bird on teh grill for dinner that night.  My uncle got one out of 7 last weekend.  Said it was tough due to the leaves and the wind. 

Me thinks they were just wating for the sharp shooter to arrive... ME 

I was 4 - 4 last year in my 1st year!!!

Saw about 10 - 12 between all of us last weekend but could never get a good shot becasue of too many leaves and the birds being very skiddish (except when you didn't have the gun).   ::)

Next weekend should be better.

My eldest boy and I are heading out bright and early tomorrow. I hope to get him on a few grouse. This will be his first grouse hunting trip carrying his new gun. Although he's not to excited about the early start, he can't wait to get in the woods. I'm hearing some mixed reports. Hopefully we'll hit a good pocket or two.

 The grouse hunting is picking up as we get into Oct and as the leaves fall off the under-brush.

 As the food that the grouse are eating changes, their need for sand and gravel to grind the seeds and buds? increases.

 Lots more birds comming out to the trails and roads for that gravel.

 also look for a good water source with Alders, young Birch and Poplar tree's.

 If you shoot a bird? check it's craw to see what it's been eating..then find that food source.

 The grouse move from each areas food source as the source changes.

 Just because you found birds there this weekend. That may not be true a week or two later, as the food source may be gone or new and better seeds and buds may have ripened.

 Get out and enjoy these Indian Summer Days! Take a kid to the woods and show him/her the fun and enjoyment that come from hunting and a day spent with father, mother, grandpa or other family and friends.
