Mississippi River 5A Dam report 2/15

Well, the ice is still holding up, we have had a little cold streak this past week so the ice is still in the 12-15" range, with some places a little more and towards the main channel it will get in the 8-10" range.
The fishing has been slow at the first wingdam, off and on, at best.  The small cigar walleyes are still around, keeps you busy for a while and there are a few keepers (15+) still mixed in but they are rare these last few weeks.  The fish dont seem to be eating, they will come to the bait and watch it -- especially the jigs.  Set lines have been working for me the last couple of days, ive had a majority of my fish on them, or a still jig.
The fish dont like to chase a jig, they like the lures just sitting there, jigging usually scares them off. (Weird!), Anyways, the walleyes are pretty slow and when they do bite, it usually only once  
The Perch have moved down river a little bit, they are still hungry, but need some chasing.  Their schools are large and the fish are big, but they only come in the area for a little while and then they are off again.  They have been fished mostly off the hump "2nd wingdam" right off of Breezy Point landing - kind of under the power lines.  If you have a flasher and want to drill lots of holes, you can stay on the fish for most of the day.  There is sticking around the small areas of weeds and the rocky bottom.
Ive caught a few here in there in the 10-12"+ range, but most are in the 8-10".  I am releasing them since they have eggs in them, and I have enough filets in my freezer already.
Guys have been coming out to the 3rd wingdam, just off of the harbor, even with the point.  They come and leave at odd hours so im not sure how they are doing.  Rumor has it they have been doing alright catching catfish and some smaller saugers with a keeper here and there.
The Pike are around closer to the open water, but they dont seem to want to bite the set lines, they like to hit your jig and rip it off - but they are around but ive only seen one landed this year since most they time they are hiting the 4lb test (about 30"s).  :fishing2:
All in all, its been slow, but with the occasional big walleye seen on the cameras, its worth going out there. The best time for walleyes is in the early morning 6am-10am and around dusk anywhere from 4:30-5:30 is usually the most action.  The perch can bite all day, but they move into the heavy fished areas around noon and then again at 4 when the walleyes start biting!  Orange has been the color most prefered, either solid or mixed with some green and chartreusse!

I just got some "Jawbreaker" jigs from Scott (DDSSBYDAY), so I will be going out there often to try those babies out.

If the ice stays til March, I think the fishing will be pretty good when they start eating more!  If its gone, ill take out the boat

Went out again tonight, caught about 12 walleyes, only 2 were around 15" the others were smaller, between 6-10".  10 of the walleyes were caught on Scott's "Jawbreaker" Jigs.  I was trying to snap pictures with my phone, but they were flopping and it was kinda tough.
The bite was early today, i got out at 4:00 and had my first bite in about 10 minutes and they didnt stop until about 5:30.
They were loving the white "Jawbreaker" jig, it worked like a charm.  This was the first time in a few weeks I have caught a walleye in the 15" range!
