Hey Yo,
Only a couple of weeks to go for the big day!  Could it be that we will actually have some nice weather on opening day!

Water temps are in the low 50's, and it all looks well for a fantastic Walleye opener here on Vermilion.

I expect the fish to be active and ready to bite.  They may be out on the main basin flats rather than back in the shallow spawning bays, however they will be bitting.

I'll be starting the day using a jig and minniow combination.
I'll also have a slip bobber and a lindy rig ready to go, just to have all the base covered.  It may be different than it has is recent years, however I don't expect them to be to hard to find.

See ya out there!

Hey Cody,
I have never really found it necessary to use them on the opener, however I know there are some that do.  Chubs and rainbows, are the local favorites.

Cody,
Sorry I almost forgot about the water clarity.

The water is stained to the color of tea.  It is even darker in some of the bays on the east end.  The west end has a much lighter stain and can be relatively clear early in the season.

Ace, do you have any jig and lure color preferences in that dark water.

Hey DD,
Jig color preference can change from day to day however, multi colored jigs have always out produced all others, at least for me.

Firetiger, pink/white, blue/white, chart/green and some other very bizzar combinations, have always been a good choice.  On the west end, many of the guides use black jigs or purple, when fishing that clearer water.

Hey DD,

The weather was fabulous and the fishing was different.  All of our fish were caught in 24ft or deeper, except for just a few fish that we caught in the evening on slip bobbers.

The traffic on Vermilion was at record levels for the fishing opener.  There were at least in the neighborhood of 200 or so boats in Pike bay on Saturday morning.  Unfortunately for them they outnumbered the fish by a good margin. :bonk:

It wasn't the best of days, but our group did catch a number of fish, including 8 or 9 in the slot.  We caught some big Smallies and my grandson was almost pulled out of the back of the boat by a Muskie, while we were Smallmouth fishing on Sunday.

Jigs and minnows caught all of the daytime fish.  We caught a number of fish on slip bobbers in the evening.  They all hit a plain red hook and a minnow.
We did try some lindy rigging with minnows and even with a crawler.  That presentation was not very successful for any of us.

Heading out this morning to do some trolling.  The fish are very scattered so we are going to go cover some water and get on some active Walleyes.

Looks like it's going to be another beautiful day on the Big V! :dancinred:

I really can't help you there other than some second hand information.  I don't guide for pan fish and seldome fish for them.  Afterall it's Walleye and Smallmouth season, who needs to catch those little fish anyway?? :rotflmao:
