Moose Lake State Park hosts open house weekend July 17-18

Moose Lake State Park will hold an open house on July 17-18, in conjunction with Moose Lake’s Agate Days celebration. Local residents and visitors can visit the park’s Agate and Geological Center, with its gem and mineral displays.  Entrance to the park and the Agate Center is free on both days.


The park also offers a variety of outdoor activities like hiking, biking, swimming and picnicking. Visitors can try their hand at fishing and bird watching or checkout activity kits at the park office. Boat, canoe and kayak rentals are also available.

Park naturalists will be on hand to provide special programming throughout this weekend event.

Moose Lake State Park is located 1/4 miles east of I-35 at the Moose Lake exit #214. The park entrance is off County Road 137. Take the Moose Lake exit off I-35. Then go east on County Road 137, the park signs are about 1/2 mile down the road.

 NATURALIST PROGRAMS:

Saturday - 10 a.m.-1 p.m. (Ongoing- meet outside of Agate and Geological Center)

·        Fish Printing - Creative craft using rubber fish. Make own artwork centered on the Japanese art of fish printing.

·        Butterfly Life Cycles - Explore the transformation from egg to caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly at this nature cart. Activities include puzzles, sort and counts and stacking blocks.

  ·        Fishing on the Pier - 3-5 p.m. (Ongoing - will be stationed on the pier). Learn fishing techniques and don’t worry about equipment since poles and bait are provided. Minnesota residents do not need a fishing license to participate.

Sunday - 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. (Ongoing - meet outside Agate and Geological Center)

·        Flashy Fish Catcher - Learn how to attract fish with a lure then design and create a decorative lure.

·        Skulls and Bones - Stop by this nature cart and explore the skulls and bones of different animals. See how they look underneath all the fur and feathers we normally see. normally see.

·        Aquatic Habitat Study – 2-4 p.m. (Ongoing - meet down by the beach).  Visit the lake and discover the animals that call the beach their home
