Anyone use a confidence decoy?  I keep wondering if it's worth the $$$ to purchase an egret or heron?

I never will.  These birds see more than we can even imagine.  I personally think some kind of movement will get there attention more than an egret or a heron stick figure.  I am amazed that if a couple of mallards drop in the rice 200 yards from us every group after  will drop down 400ft and dive bomb into the live mallards in the rice without giving us  a 2nd look.   I will take wind, rain, and low light over any type of decoy.  We have had flocks of coots hanging out by the dekes all day.  The ducks will go to the  mallards every time.   That rice I am talking about is so thick you can barely get a canoe through it.   I have no confidence in confidence dekes!!   Give me a couple of hen mallards swimming around in my dekes and I will be pulling out some extra shells. ;D ;D    I really like the wind driven spinning wing decoys.  I always set them where I want to shoot.  They are also legal in WLMAs.

What if I invested in Coot dekes versus an Egret?  Think I would have better luck?

My best duck hunting advice for investments.

               1.  Learning to use a duck call.  Once you learn use it sparingly.
               2.  Buy a wind driven spinning wing deke.  With no wind the ducks still key on it.
               3.  Jerk strings work.   Tie 3 dekes in tandom and give the a pull.  Make ripples.
               4.  Don't be the guy that works the call and the jerk string.  It is like song.  If you sing it right everyone else gets to shoot. ;D ;D

I forgot one thing.  Learning how to shoot helps too.  I am posting a pic of one of my children on the internet.  I know it is not a good idea but I feel comfortable that this site is safe.  This kid can shoot.  He spent around 2000 $ on a video game while he was at Mankato State  getting his engineering degree.   I wish I could say I taught him.  I also wish I could spend 2 grand and be able to shoot like him.  I have to go back to the fishing forum.  I am starting to lose focus. :bonk: :bonk:

I will not ever use a confidence decoy. I believe Herons or the like are detrimental because their presence signals there are fish in the shallows. I have never seen or heard of them bringing in Mallards. But once in my life I saw Woodducks swimming about 20 feet from coots.

I have'nt huinted water in many years, but when I did we always had honker floaters along the shorline, seemed to draw the far off groups alot better, usually 6 honker dekes did the trick.

What are you thoughts on putting the geese dekes within 5 yards of the blind?  Safe call as long as you're concealed well I would assume.

$2000 on a video game?  Just image how big the bar tab was when playing that game and honing his skills.

At the same time, it takes one correctly placed pellet to get em' down.  Kudos to your boy on that degree!!!!!

Red,its best to put the attenion getters where the birds can see'em from a distance, either group them away from the blind or split them up with low weed cover on shore that way they will stand out better, some up shore, some down shore with the puddlers in the middle, divers further out, plus hunting water with the dekes near the blind you best be concealed really good, any little movement and your busted, most ofetn the biggest mistake hunters make is gun movement, how many times do you see guys grab there shotgun when the birds commit over a 100yds out? The birds can see that black barrel against the tan or brown background waving like a flag from a mile away (i.e. DDS pic of his boy,his camo is good but look at the gun barrel, and sunglass refection),so unlike field hunting keep the spread away from your blind, maybe create a hole right in front of the blind for the puddlers to land if its windy, say 10-20yds wide works to.
