 Why some deer urine is blue :deer:

Now we know why some deer urine is blue
Posted on February 23, 2011 by Sam Cook
In recent days, E. Brucette Zirn posted a comment here with a question:

“What do you know about bright blue urine on deer trails – I have 3 spots in my yard definitely coming from deer?” Zirn wrote.

I called Glenn Del Guidice, a deer research biologist with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources at Grand Rapids. That bluish (to purple) urine along deer trails does come from from deer, Del Guidice said.

“We see it every year,” he said. “It’s a metabolite of a chemical in some vegetation the deer are eating.”

He was not sure where the chemical comes from, but from some form of woody browse that deer eat in the winter. It’s harmless, Del Guidice said.

Hunting is not life and death. It is more important than that.
