shoot or dont shoot

this is always fun. you call the shot. you are 200 yards away from this buck there is a strong 30+mph wind. slightly quartering to you when the wind shifts and he stops in his tracks and knows somethings up. what do you do. do you shoot or watch him turn around and run away. explain your answer


me personally i would take the shot. i shoot at 200 yards more then i do 100 yards. the only problem i have is it could be to tight of a angle for a shot.

Shoot allowing for windage and drop. Personally, a 200yd shot with a scope should be something that a seasoned hunter should be able to make. The wind is the only thing to worry about here and I would just allow for the push across and squeeze the trigger.

If he's 200 yds away and detects you when the wind shifts, I'm guessing the wind would not be a factor as it would be blowing towards the deer.  I would take the shot, but have some concerns about the background.

30-06 zeroed 2'' high at 100 will put me dead on at 200.
I would allow for up to 3'' wind drift depending on wind angle.
I know what is beyond because I have been where the deer is.
Hold for impact low on shoulder/elbow area.
Of course the rifle is steadied on the shelf of the stand.

The real question is how confident are you in your own abilities?  As FireRanger mentioned, a seasoned hunter should be able to make a 200 yard shot.  I actually had a scenario like this in '09 only the deer was going over a ridge and walking directly away from me.  I'd say it was slightly closer than 200 but easily over 180.  Only shot I had was to the back of the head/neck.
