Heres a technique I came up with last year by accident that helped to catch quite a few crappies that were hanging out just off the bottom.  I was sick of my line running slowly through my bobber so I took a took pick and made the hole bigger.  In my haste to make the hole bigger I made it too big and the bobber stop could slide through.  However, I found that if I set the line down gently after jigging I could get the bobber stop to sit just on the edge of the hole and hold the line up off the bottom.  I then added a little more weight to the line so the bobber would sink down a few inches under the water level. When a fish came and took the bait, the bobber stop would pull through the bobber and when the bobber came to the top of the water I knew a fish was on.

The tricky part of this is trying to get your weight to just sink the bobber below the water line.  I used this method quite a bit last year and was constantly outfishing my buddy.

Blazer, that sounds absolutely retarded....but if it works, COUNT ME IN!! ;D

you would figure they have to have thought of everything by now, but remember the old factor, we learn more by accident, than by design.

Jigglestick:

I agree that it sounds retarded, but I think it works because if you are dealing with light biting fish they do not feet any resistance from the bobber as they take the bait.  I plan on doing a little more tweaking to the system this winter.  I'll post my results.
