Hey everyone, I live in Nebraska and plan on doing a spring fishing trip to Minnesota this year (may/june) I was wondering what part of MN or what lake would be best? Last year we ended up going way north to a place called Hungry Jack Lake. It was decent place/lake but was looking for more. Whats a good lake that we wouldn't need a guide or is fairly small enough to locate fish? Were not picky on what we catch but would like to bring home some fish to keep. Also would like to stay on a lodge on the lake if possible. Any input would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

I would assume you are looking for Walleyes?!

I might recommend trying the different pool of the Mississippi... if you are into river fishing!  Pretty much any of the pools from Hastings down to LaCrosse are hot spots and hold some big walleyes.  You are able to cover alot of ground - but a preference to lakes can keep people away from the river.  You will get a mixture of walleyes, saugers, bass (small and largemouth), pike, pretty much anything!
Just a thought - there are alot of option here in MN, so its tough to decide on just one!

I would recommend the Whitefish chain in the Brainerd area.  Numerous lakes. Many resorts.  And plenty to do if you are not on the lake.

Two different areas that I would recommend considering.

1. There is a band of lakes that runs approximately from Alexandria to Detroit Lakes. Many excellent  lakes and resorts, and lakes that are a variety of sizes.

2. Voyageurs National park area. Kabetogama and Rainy lakes have a variety of resorts to choose from, and you may also want to consider a house boat trip. An "up north" woodsy rock and pine landscape versus the more open and flatter landscape in option 1.

Guess we need more information to really help you. A party of four buddies? Looking to rough it or do you needs hot showers and meals at the Lodge? May/June up here is not really considered spring but getting into summer. A lot of ma and pa resorts that you can get into a cabin and enjoy some good fishing if you spend a little time on the water. Ely area is a good starting point but we have a lot of water up here and going up the north shore of Lake Superior is another place to look at.

I know it sounds like it's a little to early to commit but time moves quickly. Many of the best resorts are 80% to 100% booked by mid March. :fishing:

ALL good suggestions. Thanks! We'll.. were not really the go getter type of outdoors-man type haha, would like a nice shower and decent housing. I guess when i was thinking mid may late may early june would be because its colder up in minnesota longer right? which means ice takes longer to thaw? you can tell im clueless about minnesota fishing. Anyways im going to take a look at all the places you guys told me about and do some research. And as a house boat adventure goes...I think we would be doing more drinking then fishing lol
