TURKEY TIME . TIME TO APPLY FOR SPRING TURKEY AND START PRACTICING THOSE CALLS. WHERE DO YOU HUNT/ WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CALL? RUN AND GUN, POP UP BLIND OR BRUSHED IN BLIND?

I just started Turkey hunting last year - so Im finally getting the hang of things.  I use a brushed in blind on the edge of a field.  The birds normally roost about 1/4 mile behind me and fly into the field to start their journey to our willows and river bottom.
(That is my plan for this year, atleast)  Last year I tried a few different things, and saw birds, just didnt get them close enough to shoot.  I had the best luck in the fall, just didnt close on a bird.

MY SON AND I HAVE GONE OUT THE LAST 3 YEARS, FIRST YEAR IT WAS ALL NEW TO US WE USED A BRUSH BLIND AND HUNTED PRIVATE LAND WITH A SIMPLE PUSH BUTTON CALL. THIS LAST YEAR WE WHEN OVER TO WHITE WATER AND HUNTED/FISHED TROUT FOR 4 DAYS IT WAS GREAT. POP UP BLIND, MOUTH CALLS, GREAT WEATHER, AND TIME WITH MY SONS. THIS YEAR WE WILL PUT IN FOR 2 SEASONS AND HUNT THEM TOGEATHER.

2013 will be my first turkey hunt in a very long time.

While deer hunting last weekend, I found a spot where the turkeys seem to congregate.

I crested the hill, heard one gobble, and the sky turned black.

Plan of attack will be to approach that hill from the west instead of from the south and lie in wait.

The best thrill for me is hunting from the ground against a tree with a small camo fence to hide my movement. One of the best experiences I had was when I had 12 jakes come in to my love calls and watched them for a little while motionless and then gave a little purr on my slate which enticed two of them to walk right up to the 2' fence at my feet and peer over the edge looking for the hen they thought was in there. Their heads cocked back and forth and side to side for what seemed like 10 minutes but was probably only about 1. The tent blind which can be effective is not always the way to go because it limits your mobility. Nothing like facing those royal birds face to face. (with a mask on of course) You do not want them to ever discover your true identity.

Although I have successfully stalked to within range (once with gun and once with bow) I have not shot one this way.  Note: each time I did this I didn't have a license.  The most successful method for us has been the pop up blind.  I put it out around the begining of the season and several of us use it throughout the spring seasons.  It's on a pinch point in a long narrow field and it seems that most turkey in the area make there way past it at some time or another.
