    • Fishing & Hunting South Dakota's Lake Oahe and Lake Sharpe
Just finished guiding a super bunch repeat customers from mostly around central Nebraska. Gordy Sorensen from Cairo NE (Roberts Pump) put together the trip. We fished in big wind two out of three days but put well over 250 walleye in freezer bags for them to take home. We fished Lake Oahe two days then moved down on Sharpe on day three catching limits of walleye in all 4 boats drifting with either minnow bouncer rigs or night crawler/spinner combos in mostly 15 fow or less. 30 to 40 mph winds forced drifting in sheltered area's both on Oahe and Sharpe as the main presentation. Pulling flicker shad plugs also produced fish. We had a lot of little fish on Oahe but also had as good a balance of bigger fish as you could expect with the weather factored in. The fishing is excellent on both Oahe and Sharpe but we have had a wet windy spring making for a lot harder fishing on some days. I have always said that on our lakes the months of July, August and September are the best months both for weather and fishing and this spring sure bears that out. The fishing is great in May and June but you better cross your fingers when you plan trips in these months because mother nature can step on many fishing days making earning limits necessary. Maybe this pattern all thru the Midwest will straighten up as we get into the summer months. Most fishermen are getting northern, smallmouth and a few crappie as bonus fish in their catches. Salmon fishing is spotty.

Good report Hutch,Thanx.

Maybe put up a few pics next time, fishing along the breaks out there sure is beautiful, most folks around here have'nt a clue how beautiful it is.

Gary Allen from chamberlain still around?Had some good hunts with Gary on the rez over the years.

He usually fishes south of your area tho,so maybe you guyz don't bump into each other?

I'm trying to figure how you have 250 walleye to go home when the possession limit is 8 per person and you are fishing with four boats, that comes out to eight fishermen per boat, must be very good friends  :coffee: or maybe it is 250 fillets and sixteen guys   :happy1: that must be it..

Bobby,

I think SoDak has a different meaning of possession limits like NoDak and a few other states unlike Mn,meaning  you take your daily limit and freeze them for every day your are there, its called a freezer limit, folks from nodak get pinched all the time when they come here, they forget we have different regs or just don't care, either way they get busted here, some are blantent as well and double trip or triple trip when the bite is on.But yeah 250 walleyes is a mess of fish.

Yes Gary Allen is still down at Chamberlain and he is a good friend. He was actually the first guy to ever write me a check for guiding back in the 70's. We cross paths once occasionally down on Sharpe. I will try to take a few pictures of the bluffs and put them on my web site www.fishinghutch.com.
