Lake's Oahe/Sharpe Pierre area fishing report for June 10th and 11th 2013

I along with guide Brad Garrett guided repeat customer's Dana, Lori, Vandyke and son Logan and Dave Walters, Diane and daughter Megan from Kearney/Lincoln Ne. to possession limits of walleye some bass, catfish and some Northern Pike. We fished both days on Lake Oahe with one day of real nice weather and one day of 30 mph wind. Day one we put 48 walleye in the boat by around one o'clock so we decided to run to the back of the creek and catch some catfish. We got 12 in the boat in less than an hour so we in bounded to the ramp to take pictures and clean fish. Day two the wind blew but we put all their limits in the boat with over 20 inch fish both days all their over 15 inch fish and all of their under 15 inch bonus fish plus some more bass/northern. We caught most of the walleye in around 10 fow to 20 fow and caught the catfish in 3 fow. We caught these fish on both crawlers and minnows on bottom/bouncer rigs. You might think the catfish catch is amusing but I can tell you they are very good eating on our lake (channel cat) great fun to catch and with no limit on Oahe you can take home some real weight if you want. I have always used this as a way to beat the big winds we sometimes get and usually you catch some big northern pike as bonus fish. Just get as far back in any creek that has running water and put out a slip bobber rig or just about any rig with some dead smelt or crawlers/ dead minnows and if you are in the right place you will get instant action with a nice 3 to 4 lb. avg. size catfish. A great way to get some bonus fish in the May & June months however as the summer warms it can get very hot in the back of these creeks and bugs/fly's etc. take the fun away. I actually run by request as many as a half a dozen trips a year just for catfish now with customer's just like the Vandyke's. On previous trips when the wind blew we fished for them so now any chance they get to get some extra catfish to take home they ask me to go catch some. These family's are as nice a customers as you can get and I look forward to taking them every year. The fishing on Sharpe is still very good all down at the big bend and around Pierre but there is a lot of muddy water from Antelope Creek down to the Joe Creek area making fishing harder in that area. Oahe remains excellent for numbers of smaller fish but because of the numbers of these fish some days finding bigger fish can be challenging.
