      Slow melt means threat for significant flooding is low

First 70 degree day of the season may arrive Wednesday

Warm temperatures are finally making a remarkable dent in the snowpack.

After a rough winter, one of the coldest in modern memory for the lowest average temperature, it finally feels like spring.

Temperatures reached 59 degrees in Brainerd late Monday. The forecast calls for the first 70 degrees of the season on Wednesday, about 20 degrees warmer than normal for this time of year.

While melting has continued at night, the National Weather Service in Duluth reported having temperatures in the low 30s helps.

“The threat of significant flooding is low because daily overnight low temperatures will primarily be near or below freezing, which will help slow the melt process overnight,” the National Weather Service in Duluth reported. “Fog and light rain is possible this morning as a cool front moves into the region.”

There is a chance Wednesday night may bring isolated thunder. The weather service reported a cold front will move through the Northland bringing rain showers and isolated thunder.

“Another system could bring rain showers early this weekend,” the weather service reported.

The forecast includes a chance of rain on Friday. Saturday looks to be the better day of the weekend with clouds but a warm 60 degrees. That high may drop by 20 degrees for Sunday.

Sunday should provide sun but a high of 42 is expected along with a chance for rain and snow.

Monday continues a chance of snow, albeit slight, and promises to continue the cooler air at 43 degrees. Still fresh memories of enduring cold should make the 40s welcome.
