I think my dad set the record for the single most amount of money lost down the hole last week.  We were up in the fish house and getting settled in for bed... he took out his hearing aids, glasses and watch and put them in a foam cup next to the lower bunk.  then he thought, maybe they are too close to the hole, incase a rattle reel goes off... so he pushed the cup further under the bunk...  right into another hole back there.  it all went down.

the next morning, I put my camera down and saw the glasses half sticking out of the sand.  and caught a glimpse of the watch.  no sign of the hearing aids.
we managed to retrieve the glasses after drilling, I think 5 holes in a cluster, and catching one pearch on a big treble hook spoon... (why the pearch bit on that??)
So grand total, 2 hearing aids- approx $4000($2000 each), glasses $200 and watch $40.  so we got the glasses back, only out $4040 bucks.  that equates to roughly $155 per walleye fillet.

can anyone top that amount?
BTW, my buddy in the next house lost his rod and reel down the hole, that only took about 3 holes drilled and a couple of tries to snag it.
If a gun kills people then I can blame a pen for my misspells?

I thought it was bad when I kicked the bottle of blackberry brandy down the hole.  Now, I don't feel so bad.

Tough break for your dad!

Can't top that , but I did loose a new set of Gerber multi tool.

Was rigging up a new jig to try had the tool on my lad inside my trap.

Buddy let out his "I got one " hoot so I flipped the top open and stood up to see his big fish he was hooting about.

After seeing his crappie I went back to rigging, only to realize the tool went down the hole.

Lost the bit off an auger once as well.

I hear Russ dropped his cell phone today.
The cell phone itself doesn't cost that much.
But not having it, could cost HIM plenty  :o

you would think he would have a spare phone. this could be ugly :-\

then again maybe it is all part of the big plan. what is the problem with most relations ships....yes, communication.
the relationship between man and crappie should be no different?
maybe he is trying a new strategy. a direct communication link between the fishermen of red lake and the gaurdian fish! EGAD!
WHY DIDNT i THINK OF THAT??
anybody want the number ? $$$$$$$ 8)

One night years ago, a buddy and me were ice fishing about 5 miles from home on the same lake I lived on.

It was about 25 below zero, 1 o clock in the morning and we were about 1 piece or wood from being out for the stove.

He said, I'll go start the car and let it warm up

He picked up his jacket and I heard Ploop..he said%$##@

 I said what

He said you aint going to believe this poop

 What?

The car keys fell out of his pocket and never even hit the floor or the ice...right down the hole.

Great, we are out of wood, it's 1 o clock in the morning, we are 5 miles from home and it's 25 below zero

 any other good news????

We sat thinking for a few Min.

we knew our chances of seeing anybody else at that time of the night/morning were slim.

Just then, I heard the ice popping and the water was going up and down in our holes.

I said to him, somebodies driving close by.

I ran out and flagged a guy in a mini pickup down and told him our fix

He said he would run us within a 1/2 mile of home.

This was the problem, my bud was a big man(big heart too..rest his soul), only one of us was riding in the cab

You guess it, me in the back..not dressed for that kind of ride....MAN WAS THAT A COLD RIDE!!!.

The next day, new keys, 25+ below. We went back and the good luck continued.. The car after sitting all night in the cold, wouldn't start...jumpers, starting fluid, frozen hands..finally off the ice...didn't fish the rest of the winter...had enough

One time I and a freind went spearing out to Oahe. First thing he does after setting down in his house was to take his specs off and wipe the fog off them. Yep...down they went. 14 feet down. He walked over to my house to tell me he couldnt see a damn thing without them. I came over with a treble hooked spoon, and first try I managed to hook them and pull them up the hole. He was sure a happy fisherman!

Lets see...  I managed to drop my custom mid west rod down the hole paired with a $50 real and a $4 jig ealier this year.  That one really hurt.  Also I learned not to tie on a jig over a hole since if you lose grip of the jig down it goes.  I think I have last 2 radios down the hole.  I'm sure there is more but just can't remember.

Sure could be interesting come open water,  with a underwater camera and some GPS spots marked out where some of these fish house cities were when the ice was still covering the lake.

I bet you would see all kinds of good stuff

BFG ur dad must have better hearing aids than mine. Dads are expensive but nowhere near that much.

Most $$$ - Does it have to be all at once?

The first thing to go was a starter. The starter was weak so we took the starter and the battery in the shack to warm up. When it's cold and windy takes awhile getting that stuff off. (high that day was -8) So there we sit 4 hrs from home and 6 miles out on red lake w/o a starter. Boy wish I would have knew some IBOTS then.

Called a buddy from home. He went out took starter off the other vehicle and drove the 4 hrs to bring it to us. When he got to us he said you guys can put the **** thing on ur self, I had to shovel 3' of snow to take it off. Ya know he was planning on heading back that evening but after lettin him reel up a few croppidiles he decided to play hooky for a few days.

Then he went and lost his keys, radio, ice spud and some of my dice down the hole. Loseing his keys was a big deal as he had all his keys on there house, shop, P.O. box, well dozen keys in all. He only had duplicates for his house and truck, what a pain in the arse. You guessed it the spare truck keys were locked in the truck. Took out one of the slider windows in the back and got his spare back.

So dollar wise not a whole lot was lost but the whole thing was a big hassle. Some of the keys were not replacable either.

The only thing that really stick out to me was my new zippo going down the hole. Watched it drop all the way to the bottom on the vexilar. Of course it sat ther on the bottom showing up on the vexilar for a week until I finally moved the house because I couldn't stand it anymore. I know I trebled something off the bottom once as well with the help of the camera. (good for something right) I just don't recall what that was. I can't say i have ever lost anything real expensive down the whole though.

I had a spearhouse on the lake where I used to live, the house was walking distance from my home. I hadnt been in it in a week or so, so one day I walked down to open up the hole. I was sure I had left my chisel outside propped up at the house but couldn't find it, thought somebody took it. I went back to the house and welded another one and went and opened the hole. After my eyes became accustomed to the dark, I saw what looked like a long weed sticking up from the bottom, few minutes later I realized it was my chisel. The sun had heated up the steel and melted the ice and the chisel went through and stuck standing up in the mud. I got it back with a nail through a broomhandle.

I wish I could invent a rig to troll behind the boat to retrieve lost items.
the number of items lost down the fish holes on upper red lake would be mind boggleing as well as the kinds of items. I know of rods, flashlights, phones, GPS'. auger bits, scoopers including slush inhalers, knives. including leathermen tools, gameboys, chisles, glasses and most of these were lost by ME!! ok well at least some of them were. most of them from our group tho.
