Would love to learn a little more about the trout fishing and land based fishing opportunities. I can learn the how to's and such on my own but the where's get me. Not looking for specifics or honey holes, just what species I can chase in what types of water. There's a big difference in what lives where here vs where I'm from. Just moved here from NC in April. I've caught more trout in western NC than I care to remember, but all on spinning gear.

I primarily crappie fish. My boat didn't make the move and my wallet hasn't allowed for a new one, so I'm just trying to explore land based options within a reasonable drive of the west Metro. (2hr)

I don't eat fish much anymore so species don't bother me.  Thinking carp or catfish in the river.... I used to flathead fish a bunch. I'm sure the 'sippi  holds decent blues/flatties/channels. I'm equipped with Abu 6500s and such for that. I also have plenty of ultra light gear crappies/panfish...although I'm not overly interested in trying panfish til it gets cold and hard water abounds.

Figure walleye/pike/toothy critters and such are out of question until I get a boat or winter comes.

How are the SE MN trout streams? Thinking of picking up a fly rod and trying to learn that.  Access reasonable or is it a lot of private land access? River access here around the city shouldn't be too bad should I give the catfish a try. I miss my boat lol. Not used to being stuck to land, but the opportunities for something new excite me.

with my self not being from the area up there I cant give you specifics but I can say that I am sure you can get into almost any of the fish you mentioned in the river up there I know the Mississippi has flats and channels and walleyes and pike as does the Minnesota if you can find access up that way    I would even think you could catch some decent fish off of docks and channels up on some of the lakes up there if you hit them at the right time of day and right time of year.  I don't know anything about the south east trout fishing as I have never been down there but I do know there are some trout ponds and streams across the state other than se mn   get on the mn dnr web site and do some looking around and you should be able to find some of the other trout opportunities in the state

You can catch any of those species at the Coon Rapids dam, and there is a DNR stocked trout pond very close to there as well. I'm not sure what the competition for space is (cause I haven't fished it for years) but, all of those fishing opportunities are accessible from land.

Are there flatties as far up as Coon Rapids? Im a flathead fisherman from days gone by, but never in a river and never from the bank.

Honestly, I caught MANY catfish there back in the day. But, I couldn't tell you what kind they were. (I was a much younger man then)
