Q: I’m getting my snowmobiles ready for the trails this winter and tried to renew my registration and trail sticker, but the license vendor would not sell me a trail sticker for my Minnesota snowmobile. Is one not required anymore?







A: Because of a law change made by the Legislature in 2012, the fee for a trail sticker is now included in the price of your Minnesota snowmobile registration. As long as your snowmobiles are currently registered, you are not required to purchase any other privilege for riding a groomed trail. There are a few people who use their snowmobiles only on private property or on adjoining waters for ice fishing or working in the woods, and who do not wish to spend money on the now-included trail sticker fee. For those very limited number of instances, there is a non-trail (NT) registration available through your deputy registrar. However, this registration is non-

transferrable and requires a new registration number to be affixed to the sled, and prohibits the user from riding anywhere there is a designated grant-in-aid or state trail. In addition, if the user of an NT-registered snowmobile wishes to then ride on a designated trail, they need to purchase a regular registration for the snowmobile; simply adding a trail sticker is not an available option.
