Well the hand writing was on the wall~ Here we go...Kinda suspected after what cookie posted a couple weeks ago about the 2014 walleye take @ 1million lbs.Again to appease the gill netters take....This will  continue on our lakes where gill netting is allowed during spawn.

More restrictive walleye regulations for Upper Red Lake take effect Jan. 23

Beginning Friday, Jan. 23, walleye regulations will become more restrictive on Upper Red Lake because of a record December walleye harvest, according to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

The daily bag and possession limit will be two walleye, and anglers must immediately release all walleye
17- to 26-inches long. Only one walleye in possession may be longer than 26 inches. The current regulation allowed three walleye in the daily bag and possession limit.

Walleye fishing pressure and harvest continue to increase on Upper Red Lake despite more restrictive angling regulations that were implemented on Dec. 1, 2014.

“Fishing pressure in December was more than double compared to last December,” said Gary Barnard, Bemidji area fisheries supervisor. “High walleye catch rates and ideal ice travel conditions attracted a record number of walleye anglers to Upper Red Lake this winter.”

Walleye harvest is up 57 percent from estimates for a comparable time period last year, requiring some action to help curtail excessive winter harvest.

Upper Red Lake harvest restrictions are necessary to comply with a joint walleye harvest plan agreement with the Red Lake Band of Chippewa. For more information on Red Lake fishing regulations, see www.mndnr.gov/regulations/fishing.

2 walleyes should be plenty for people to keep especially for familys going up there with 4-8ppl. its about the experience not the limit. people get to upset about how many fish they can and cant keep. id rather they regulate it then have it overfished.

Cody I sure do agree with the part about the experience.  However when a guy drives 5 hours one way and can't even bring home enough Walleye's to feed a family of 4 (2 15 inch walleyes just doesn't cut it) it will keep me away.

I gotta agree with the general, hell go out on any local lake for the experience with the family, kids will have a gas catching sunfish and perch and your a lot closer to home and money ahead for your experience.

It just bothers me that we(non natives) do so much to maintain a healthy fishery for the future of certain lakes only to have the selected few clean house and put the blame on others, then the cycle starts over, tax payers to the rescue.Okay,it burns my hide....there I said it.

Ya know,as good as the bite has been on our non-native 50,000 acres,we never here how the other 1/2 of url is doing,or the entire lower red?Gotta think the red lake nation has been doin some fishing...Back in the 70's I remember traveling along the lower red, tribal members would pull there houses from there summer location and spend the winter on the ice, hell they have a 10 walleye daily today with no slot, one would assume they're doin pretty darn good as well.
