A lot of these stands are "shacks on stilts"
The problem is more towards the shooting lanes that are being cut.

they talked about at one time taxing them as buildings on private land.

personally I think it sucks and they should leave things be as they are. politicians got bigger problems then that to worry about.

i don't like perm. stands.  They are an eye sore, safety hazard for loggers, and preempt other hunters from hunting an area.  There are a few guys that have build some pretty elaborate stands in a few really good bottlenecks near where I hunt.  If I try to hunt where I did 7 or 8 years ago these guys now tell me to move because its their area now.
Anything that is free is worth saving up for.

Personally I like them and hunt from one. I walk almost a mile into the woods to get to mine. I do however understand the other point of view. Portables aren't near as comfy as I sit all day.

I'm not a big fan. think it stakes ownership on public land and causes people to behave poorly over a false sense of ownership. you want a permanent stand with no chance of someone walking up and sitting 20 yards from you. buy some land and pay taxes, otherwise  share the woods.

I understand both sides, but if I was to choose an argument, it would have to be nay. public land is for all and perms on public like mentioned give a false sence of ownership. I could go for them being grand fatherd in but dont know if that would help matters. cant stand how resorts are charging access fee to ice fish either. its like being charged to camp on public water.

For the reasons posted above, I'm on the NAY side as well.  Of course it makes me a bit of a hypocrite as I have and use them on my land.  Then again, anything damaged on my land land is my loss.  I would not be opposed to leaving portables up during the season.

on your land that you own and pay taxes on. you maintain them and take the loss if something happens to them.

i hate confrontations when hunting especially on public land.  i'm out here to relax and not deal with some fruit cup that thinks he owns the public land because he shot a deer there 4 years ago

I am in favor of NO perm stands on any public land. Crow Wing co. already prohibits perms on county land. This eliminates the perception that the land belongs to the one with the stand. If you want to have a perm then buy the land and pay the taxes and do the upkeep.

there is also a safety issue with perm stands.. those that are not maintained or abandoned can still invite a wandering soul to climb in them. and then it almost becomes litter in the woods.. milled lumber, nails, ladders, carpet, chairs..

I say ban permanent stands and make it illegal to use some ones portable stand while it is on public land.

Current law says you can use some ones stand if you beat them there if it is on public land, the owner can not make you leave it even if they intend to remove it that minute. It is hunter harassment to do so. The owner has to wait till you leave it.

I hunt out of a ground blind now but we used permanent stands for years.

I also think that cutting huge shooting lanes should be banned as well, up by where I hunt there is a person who takes a bobcat with a brush hog on it and cuts a 15 foot wide 200 yard long  patch through the tag alders in the tailings basin from the old mine. One to the east and one to the south.

It is so wide and long it shows up plain as day in satellite images through google.

Since 1959 I hunted out of rough stands.Made with maple saplings between 3 trees mostly Birch trees cause they grow in tripods,Then either birch or maple sapling flooring, with a sapling hand rail. Back then people respected your stand area cause there were few stands in Nemadji state forest.Since about 1990 those boxed in plywood stands started being placed everywhere! Then windows and heaters were installed! That chased us out of Nemadji!! the perms were thought of as MY area dont infringe! I lived in Holyoak and chaine sawed out every one I saw! While getting fire wood.
I say no more! if you want a temp stand remove it nightly and take no ownership of public lands! First come first served!
My father and uncles hunted Nemadji with their fathers and their fathers with their dads,Back to before the automobile,Then WWII break and in 1947 right back. Now days its a zoo out there with the ownership attitude! And enough plywood to build a few houses! No respect for public land and others! :titanic:

dew i think you nailed it with the respect thing.   we knocked a few permanents out of the public behind us, took the wood and burned it so as to not leave a mess.
