Idaho  Tribune: Thin Ice Claims Lives of Two Fishermen in North Central Idaho

             A fishing trip turned deadly Feb. 6 in north-central Idaho.

This morning's Lewiston Tribune reported that 79-year-old David Kries and 73-year-old Roger Ward, both of Kamiah, were killed Friday when they fell through the ice while fishing on Lewis County's Winchester Lake. A Life Flight helicopter rushed to the scene after receiving a call that someone had fallen through the ice, but while the rescue was in process, a second person was discovered in the lake. Both men were pulled from the frigid water, but they died a short time later at Lewiston's St. Joseph Regional Medical Center.

 The Lewis County Sheriff's Office said the two men had been fishing on the shore, but a wind gust blew some of their equipment toward the lake's center. When they tried to retrieve their gear, the ice broke. Officials said the ice was anywhere from 2- to 4-inches thick but there were sections of the lake that were ice-free.
