It's all most here boys!  Man, it's going to be a long week.  My internal alarm's going off at about 4:30 every morning.  I think I've cleaned the rifles 4 times in the last week.  The gear is starting to pile up in the basement.  Thank God the opener only comes once a year, because if I had to go through this once a month for the entire fall............

Good luck to all the Minnesota boys next week.  Man, we just live for this stuff!  If anyone's passing through Outing on Hwy. 6 on your way north, stop by for a visit Friday evening.  Let me know and I'll give you our location.  Always nice to see fellow forum members.

Hang 'em high boys!

May the wind be in your face, the sun at your back, and a nice buck coming down the trail.

gophergunner,
Sorry won't be going that far north.  Thanks for the invite.  Gun opener is always an exciting time.  The weathers been so nice I haven't taken out the heavy stuff yet.  I've been out with the bow a number of time and plan to go tomorrow and Sunday as well.  Now is a great time to be out there because the bucks are on their feet checking for the first hot doe.  I did shoot my rifle last weekend so that's ready.  My pack has been "packed" for a month or more and I will actually remove some stuff for rifle season.

I wish we had a trailer or a camper.  We'll be staying at the Wigwam Hotel just south of the thriving metropolis of downtown Outing.  I guess you could saw we're in South Outing Heights!

I'll be up by park Rapids at the family farm. Trail cams don't show anything many would get excited about but I don't care about that. Deer camp is my favorite. Never knowing what can step outta the swamp at any moment. I haven't gotten anything ready yet. Plan on shooting the rifle tomorrow to make sure she's still hitting where she needs to be.

Bow hunting right now, so all of my stuff is ready. Last night, I saw 2 mature does with 3 fawns. I passed. This morning, 2 smaller bucks, one real narrow 8 and a 3 point (only had 1/2 a rack) they passed about 80 yards out with no clear shot.

And the kids will be coming home for rifle season, so they should be able to see something. We live at deer camp 24/7, and it only gets way better when the kids are home!

Talked to my buddy yesterday.  He had 4 deer working around him, all close to within range.  The one doe turned and went the wrong way, and he had 3 close by, but the property owner came home and deer hear the car doors closing or something else and went back away from him.

Well guys, I've got a mind numbing update to report.  I've been helping my son's buddy Tyler get set up for deer season.  He just completed 5 years of service in the Marines and got out three weeks ago.  He went to get a hunting license, only to find out they won't sell him one unless he takes the hunter's safety course.  Tyler not only was in the Marines for 5 years, but he was a RANGE OFFICER and GUNNERY INSTRUCTOR.  He scored out highest in his group on the  M-4, or is it still called the M-16 in the military?  We were heading north at 7 this morning, but he's got to get on the horn again with the state and see if he can get this resolved.  If not, he'll have to take an on line safety course so he can buy a license.  5 years of service, instructor certified, an expert marksman, and he can't buy a friggin' license.  You can't make this stuff up.

Unfortunately he will have to do it, i was in the same situation a few years back, i also had to find an instructor for the field portion of the test. Good Luck

Wow! thats our DnR for ya, but I belive pstuder is correct. These days, one needs the course, its not hard to find and a range instructor, the local PD or sheriffs dept, can help. really sorry to here of this set back. i was looking forward to his story.

Here is a second option the requires only the "on line" course and not the range/DNR involvement.

Active Military
Exempt from Safety
Certificate
Requirement
A person is exempt from having to have a firearms safety certificate if the person has completed military basic training and is serving in active military service in any branch or unit of the U.S. Armed Forces, including while on regular leave or terminal leave.

Nevertheless, following active military service, the firearm safety certificate is again required. However, anyone who has completed basic military training is exempt from the shooting and field exercise portion of the instruction for that certificate and may take the remainder of the instruction online through the DNR.
(Minn. Stat. §§ 97B.015 and 97B.020)

“Active duty” is defined broadly to include federal active service (U.S.C. Title 10),
federally funded state active service (U.S.C. T

The apprentice license is a viable option but note that it does have one caveat.  People hunting on an apprentice license cannot be hunting by themselves.  There must be a licensed hunter over the age of 18 in the stand/blind with them at all times.

If that sounds like it could work then I'd just do that for now.  You're allowed to do it twice in your life and then you must get the firearms safety certificate.

Yeah he sure does!  He's a little different, but really a nice guy.  He took us and showed us some spot to check out for hunting, and we saw deer in all of them except, of course, where I chose to post.   I looked at a few reviews for the place and nobody had anything bad to say.  The rooms were clean-everything worked.  Restaurant right across the street, and we can walk to the woods from the hotel.
