On the south end of the lake, most resorts have pulled fish houses off of the ice for the year.  Anglers on the ice this past weekend reported good fishing for pike and walleyes.  Open water fishing on the river has started out excellent with good numbers of fish and many trophies.

The Rainy River is open to the Birchdale access and large boats can access the river at this landing.  Some resorts have been taking customers out river fishing in boats with excellent results.  Earlier in the week, anglers were pushing boats off the shore ice, again with great fishing.  Safety first.  Help others.  Be patient at landings. Take care in releasing walleyes.  Updated river info at http://lakeofthewoodsmn.com/rainy-river-fishing/

Some ice fishing still happening at the NW Angle through resorts and outfitters.  This is a day by day call as how long ice fishing will last.  ATV's, UTV's, and snowmobiles only.  As always, call ahead to your resort.  Safety first. Resorts are checking ice daily and reporting 16+ inches of ice down to areas of less ice and open water in typical trouble spots. Snow has melted off of the lake. Daytime, 24-28'.  Fishing has been hot in the late afternoon and evening. Jigging with jigging raps or rattle spoons is working best along with glow colors. On the Ontario side crappie fishing remains good.  Use a guide as areas of sketchy ice.  For day to day reports, watch Lake of the Woods Tourism Facebook, Twitter and fishing reports.  www.LakeoftheWoodsMN.com.
