New years Day brought a sunshine morning, a light breeze and an eager Duey.  Our last outing would find us in a small cattail patch bordered by a creek  behind a friends barn.
The recent rain had caused a thin layer of ice to form and each step was disaster, no stealth here.
We bumped a hen right away, and saw a second bird go out the south end.  We made the turn, were hunting back to the north, down the east side.   A brief but intense bit of dog work, sent a mature rooster busting skyward, cackling on the flush.  Bird was brought to earth with a single killing shot and a retrieve to hand ended our 2006 season. The last was also the first of 2007.
There was time but no need to look for another, this was the perfect end to a wonderful season.
