                    Ask a Conservation Officer:

Does child keep his or her own fishing limit?

 Jul 30, 2016

Q: If I buy my child a lifetime fishing license and he is 11 years old, can he keep his own separate limit of fish or does he still go under my license limit?

A: Yes, your child may keep his own limit of fish with or without the lifetime angling license. A Minnesota resident younger than 16 may take and possess their own limit of fish without an angling license in Minnesota. Once a resident turns 16, they are required to have in their possession either a resident youth angling license or the lifetime fishing license. A nonresident younger than 16 would require either a nonresident Minnesota youth angling license or be included in a nonresident family angling license in order to have their own possession limit of fish. See pages 12-13 of the 2016 Minnesota Fishing Regulation synopsis for more information.
