Minnesota State Forest Nursery seedling sales start today

 :coffee: .....
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources state forest nursery is accepting orders for April and May 2017 seedling pickup or delivery.

Millions of seedlings will be available for the 2017 spring planting season, including 22 species of native bareroot trees and shrubs. Seedling selection and availability decreases after the first rush of orders in fall.

New for 2017 is the Pollinator Pack, which contains a mixture of chokecherry, highbush cranberry, juneberry, red-osier dogwood and wild plum that will create pollinator-friendly habitat.

"With over 85 years of experience, the nursery has developed methods to achieve the best seedling stock possible," said Adam James, assistant nursery supervisor.

State Forest Nursery seedlings are grown from seeds collected in Minnesota, James said. Seedlings are then shipped to the same region from where their seeds were collected so the seedlings are well-adapted to local growing conditions and have a better chance to survive.

Visit the DNR's website at www.mndnr.gov/forestry/nursery for a list of available species and the tree seedling order form, or contact the nursery at 800-657-3767.

A minimum of 500 seedlings must be ordered, which is enough seedlings to cover about 1 acre of land. The purchase can be broken down into increments of 100 of each species. Prices vary depending on species and start as low as $125 for 500 seedlings.

Private landowners can buy state forest nursery seedlings to:
•Reforest land.
• Improve wildlife habitat.
•Create shelterbelts and buffer zones.
•Improve air and water quality.

Minnesota landowners with a forest stewardship plan should contact their plan writer for information on cost-share programs for purchasing and planting seedlings. Contact a local forestry office or visit www.mndnr.gov/foreststewardship to learn about the forest stewardship program.
