CO Jeff Halverson (Staples) returned from working a western fire in California. Officer Halverson worked the small game/bow season openers and had a 500-pound bear harvested by a very excited bear hunter.

CO Tim Collette (Pequot Lakes) checked hunters on the small game and archery deer openers.
Nice weather brought many people out and some success was seen. Time was also spent monitoring ATV activity and working deer shining activity where an individual caught shining after legal hours had a rifle, two shotguns, a handgun, a compound bow and an open container of alcohol in the vehicle at the time.

CO Jim Guida (Brainerd 2) worked archery, small game, and early goose hunters this week.

Licenses were checked and hunters were reminded to wear blaze orange when hunting squirrels.

Some areas where deer baiting problems have existed in the past years were checked with good compliance. A call of an injured eagle on the roadway turned out to be a goose.

CO Sam Hunter (Park Rapids) checked ATV's, fishermen and hunters. Small game and archery

deer hunting opening weekend brought a lot of activity to the area. Officer Hunter picked up an

injured eagle and investigated an aquatic vegetation complaint.

CO Bob Mlynar (Aitkin) worked bear, archery deer, grouse and ATV activity.

CO Karl Hadrits (Crosby) reports activity this week including response to issues of trespassing and suspected poaching, suspicious fishing activity, mud truck and OHV damage to snowmobile trails, abandoned bicycles at a public access, and wildlife issues of beaver damage, fisher killing chickens, bear damage, and an injured bald eagle. Archery deer and grouse hunters were checked over the opening weekend, and fall fishing activity was monitored. An individual who was caught hunting deer over bait faces confiscation of a nice bow, loss of hunting privileges, and a stiff fine.

CO Lee (Crosslake) and COC investigated illegal deer baiting locations in preparation for the opening of the deer archery season. A party was located hunting over illegal bait. Several small game hunters were checked in the Fifty Lakes area. Time was also spent assisting with a Wildlife firearms shoot in Grand Rapids.
