I was thinking about purchasing a couple of these. Have you guys ever used them before?

I believe the company is called "Bite Me Box Tipups"

I've thought about them too but the price always scared me away. What's this ones price? The other thing is they are so big and would take a lot of space. Seems like 90% of the time an insulated round tip up works fine. I do need one of everything though, if I can just get out the first time then my buying cravings go away. These right before weeks can be very expensive.

I couldn't agree more hawg :happy1:.  New ion ice auger, new marcum camera, I need to stay home or be out pheasant hunting.  Those tip up boxes look to be about $100 each.  I'll stick to the round insulated ones.

You'll love the Ion. Did you get the X? I bought a new one last year so I couldn't justify a whole new auger but I did buy a new style drill for $139 from Reed's. I think the centering point is a good improvement. Mine worked very well but sometimes my holes would end up just under the hole sleeve and let in cold and freeze the hole faster when it was bitter cold out. I have my eye on the new HD Aqua Vu camera too but $699, or $599 (can't afford either) is a big ouch! LPS, I do know a couple people that have the boxes and love them. LRG on HSO swears by them.

Hawg,

I did not get the X as I have a gas auger too that I'll use until it dies when I'm running and gunning.  The ion was mainly just for drilling the holes in the new house.  I'm not sure if it has the point on it or not I didn't check that close.  However my 7 year old Eskimo auger does have what I believe they call the new auger on an X.  So if need be I'll just put that auger on the ion.  I purchased one of the marcum pancams for inside the big house.  The kids love the idea of being able to turn the camera with their  iPods.  I'll have it hooked up to the 32inch tv inside the house.  Hopefully I'll get to try it out this year ;)

Only the brand new X has the center point but in all reality it's not a big deal. It's that 1 month prior to season when my stupidity gland takes over that made me buy it.

I have 10 of the round insulated tip ups, and have had them freeze before. I was thinking I could put a candle or sterno can in there to keep the hole open.

i have about 15 tip ups from the 9.99 to the more.expensive round isulated. they all freez up one thing ive done before was paint a 5 gal bucket black,, drill a hole thru the top just big enough for the spoolto fit thru, and cover the the hole with tue bucket. the black absorbs the sun heat, or one can put a candle in ther. the only inconvience is u have to lift the tip and bucke off the hole, grap the line to set the hoom, on usually dose this with the tip hut now yu have the bucket.  doing this with large pike was a hassle, cause now u have a bucket to get in the way

Do you guys know how to re lube them correctly? Take them apart and run a 22 cal. swab thru them with a coat hanger wire and then clean the shaft. Put in a little Blu Lube or other tip up lube in the bottom of the shaft and hold your finger over the top end. As you slowly insert the shaft from the bottom release the top hole only when the pressure starts to force the lube out around the shaft at the bottom. Put your finger back on the top hole and repeat until the shaft is all the way up. That lubes the entire shaft evenly. Don't get excessive with the lube or it can pack to tight. The old founder at HT that died a while back taught me that, your tip ups will be like new.

I think for $100 you could make boxes for all your tip ups to do the exact same thing.

I replied here earlier but must not have hit the post button.  We were talking about this awhile back but may have been on the other site.  In MN now isn't it considered unattended lines when in a fish house to have tip ups outside.  I love doing that.  Having a tip up outside the window to watch.  So I don't do it anymore cuz I was thinking that it is illegal now.

Ayup. Now they get ya on "unattended".   Jerks.

What fishing methods are illegal?
•    Intentionally fishing for a species during its closed season.
•    Using an artificial light to lure, attract or spot fish. However, you may use a lighted artificial
lure. Batteries used in lighted fishing lures must not contain mercury.
•    Leaving your fishing rod or any type of line with hooks attached unattended.
•    Using explosives, firearms, chemicals (not including fish scents), spring devices or electricity
to take fish.
•    Taking fish by hand (noodling) or by snagging.

Our question Rebs is:  Is a line that is set up outside a fish considered unattended if you are inside the fish house?  I believe it started due to someone that was tip up fishing and stepped inside a nearby fish house to talk to someone and was ticketed because now he had unattended lines...   Being inside the house may cancel out the 200' rule.  You are the club detective.

Yup...considered unattended. They used to state ya had to be within 40' of it and have it readily visible. Not anymore. I can't keep up with the changes,,,, :doah:

I guess you guys figger it out...in another section of the regs, it now states this:   :doah:

Ice fishing

How many lines can I use through the ice?
Two, except on designated trout lakes and streams you can only use one line.

How far away can I go from my lines?

You must remain within sight of your line. If you’re using a tip-up (a device with spooled line and a
flag that pops up to indicate when a fish bites) you need to be within 200 feet.

Thing is, each one is gonna call it like they want. I had a new pup with a John Wayne attitude nail me in my porty, back when you needed yer reg # TAG tied to your portie, AND yer DNR# legible on the side. My number was ripped off in a gust of wind (new shelter) but was on OTHER side, and my tag and reg # was zipped tied to porty. Little prick starts writing me a ticket, so I pull out my badge and explain he's making one that isn't gonna fly with the other reg on it. Still gave me a ticket, I took him to court and it was dismissed as a petty misdemeanor" , aka parking ticket. little smartass. There's a few knobs out there, though the majority are great guys/gals. The bottom line is to properly EDUCATE folks, unless there's a blatant violation, like too many fish. Writing a ticket just to ticket hints you need to find another job.

When you fish the popular lakes around here you see lots of wardens and none has ever said anything about my tip ups outside the house. I'm I just lucky? Years ago, maybe 30, we were having a party. Everybody started leaving and the next thing you know I was alone with 29 tip ups out and 6 lines in my house. I got them, went home 1/2 in the bag (no 3/4) and proceeded to spray paint all my tip ups white so they couldn't see them from the air. Great idea huh?Well, the holes are black in the white snow which made them stand out more, so all I did was get a couple buckets full of sticky gooey tip ups. Not one of my prouder moments  :bonk: Friends still give me the business about that.

Since we are bearing our souls here I did one too.  I had just bought one of those wooden tip ups. My buddies and I were fishing at my cabin on Ottertail.  We were partying like rock stars as usual.  We were going to  leave on Sunday morning and I realized I had left my new tip up out on the lake.  We all drove out to get it on our way home.  We could see the flag up a mile away.  We got to it and all of the line was out. A good sign.  I pulled it in and it was a 6 lb walleye.  Biggest one I had ever caught..   lol  I even had it mounted and was so proud of it.  Now that I live on the Rainy I have people come in and they look at that fish and look at me and I can tell they are thinking, why did I mount such a little walleye.   lolol
