Do you agree with Trump's statement....for once, I do. Jefferson kept slaves, so take down his statues, erase his name from the constitution? I went to Jefferson School...change the name?  It's part of history, That was what was done back then, and we need to LEARN from it, NOT ERASE it! You can't sanitize our country's history, which is what people are trying to do, along with making everyone try to believe there is only one mindset that's right.

President Donald Trump says it's "Sad to see the history and culture of our great country being ripped apart" with the removal of Confederate statues and monuments around the country.

Local and state officials have renewed pushes to remove Confederate imagery from public property since the violence and death of a woman in Charlottesville, Virginia, during a white nationalist rally over the removal of a Robert E. Lee statue.

Baltimore and other cities have already removed or covered up Confederate statues.

Trump in a Thursday tweet called them "our beautiful statues and monuments" and said "you can't change history, but you can learn from it."

"Robert E Lee, Stonewall Jackson - who's next, Washington, Jefferson? So foolish!" Trump continued. "The beauty that is being taken out of our cities, towns and parks will be greatly missed and never able to be comparably replaced!"

Yes we would have to erase those names as words from our dictionaries if we went the way some are looking at this.   And that isn't going to happen.  Let them stand and learn from them works for me.  Maybe put a plaque in front of them explaining their niche in history.  Whether it be good or bad.  Times have changed and so have we.

Another view...this makes sense to me too; ie; I can understand his view:

CHULAFINNEE, Ala. (AP) - White Southerners who equate Old South symbols with regional pride rather than hate are even more on the defensive since neo-Nazis, Ku Klux Klansmen and other extremists became the face of the fight over Confederate monuments.

With more than two dozen relatives who fought for the Confederacy, Robert Castello literally wears his Southern pride. The visor, suspenders and ring he donned Thursday were all emblazoned with the familiar design of the rebel battle flag.

But Castello, whose Dixie General Store sells Confederate-themed hats, shirts, stickers and signs in rural eastern Alabama, said he doesn't have any use for overtly racist groups like the Klan.

"When I was growing up it was like a badge of honor to be proud of your Southern heritage. It was taught and it was part of who you were," said Castello, 58. "To see it denigrated down to the point of Nazis is disgusting."

A leading Southern heritage organization, the Sons of Confederate Veterans, had no official involvement in the bloody protests in Charlottesville, Virginia, and its leader condemned the white supremacists who rallied for preserving a statute of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee.

"It's painful to watch, for lack of better words," said Thomas V. Strain Jr., the group's commander. "It was our family that fought, and it was our families that died, and now we have these knuckleheads hijacking the flag for their own purposes."

If people would keep their nose outta others business, learn to ignore what they don't like, work on their own issues, instead of revving things up,  and glorifying it on the news and TV every day, maybe the jerkwads would give up. Worry about yer own life first, and quit forcing yer viewpoint on everyone else.

Reb I agree with your first post. I have one question for everyone. If all Confederate monuments and statues from the Civil War are removed, will any and all references to the Civil War NOT be taught in our schools afterwards????? I've got more, but too wound up after watching the news lately.

Who knows? The way we have to sanitize everything nowadays, and force kids to accept anything and everything, rather than allowing them to learn from right and wrong, and develop an opinion on their own, and how to deal with conflict, IMO, is just hurting them.  A good instance, sports. It used to be expected everyone participates that was physically able. Sports USED to teach things like learning to accept losses, deal with conflict, be gracious losers/winners, good sportsmanship, become leaders, etc.,etc. Now, it's OK not to take sports, and EVERYONE gets a participation trophy...."Yay, you almost caught a ball! That's OK!  Yer a winner!" We (not me) wants to mold the kiddies into one certain mindset, and turn them all into a buncha weak-kneed babies that will accept anybody and anything, because it's "the right thing to do". I really wonder how the hey we are even finding people to join the armed forces with what the schools are turning out lately. Pretty soon we won't even have a flag, a country, or a history, because it's all been erased, since it was all the "wrong thing to do".  It'll be a rainbow flag flying over a devastated, overtaken country. There will be one, lonely, crooked sign left standing, that says "It was the right thing to do..."

This article provided some background I wasn't aware of and is causing me to re-think the merits of removing certain monuments.

Here is a quote from that story:

"These names were specifically chosen to intimidate and exclude African Americans," Dallas ISD parent Mary Parrish said to board members when she stood to speak.

It seems extremely plausible that Mary could be correct.  And if she is, I think there is merit in the discussion.

A big part of the problem is perception and perspective - which change over time.  I don't have any problems sending my children to Martin Luther King Elementary or John Fitzgerald Kennedy High School.  But if the school's name was Malcolm X Elementary, I'd be at the meeting helping to look for a better name.

I think it is also worth nothing that the public school system is probably the last place in America where major political and funding decisions are made at the lowest level by district voters.  If the people in that district want to change the name of their school, I have no horse in their race.

WHAT DO I THINK?????????? i think these nimrods should mind there own friggin business. good, bad or ugly, its part of our heritage, or history, friggin deal with it.  this country has gotten so politically correct its pathetic. i have no problem with immigration.......to a point. but when they COME to this country and start demanding changes to adapt to there culture they need a one way ticket back to where they came from.

when U.S. citizens travel to other countries, to the best of my knowledge they dont start demanding cultural changes.
