Is spreading lawn seed with a spreader over you entire lawn a waste of money/seed? I know working it in with a rake or top dressing with soil is even better. I did this earlier this spring and haven’t seen much happen. Opinions.

Nope....on an established lawn, Coop. That's the only way I fertilize, I always mix them together.  (except for the midsummer fertilization) Fall and Spring are dandy times. Gotta say that's the reason my lawn stays so thick. Started doing this about 7-8 years ago, and I sure can tell the difference. I'm talking about on an established lawn, right before a rain, though. If you mean on bare soil, ya, lots of wash away and free bird food....gotta lay that soil over the seed, or have the ground raked up loose, do a drop spread of seed, then some type of cover over the seed/soil.

It’s an established lawn that has been neglected. I mowed then spread the seed with a fertilizer spreader. Later I fertilized. I’m trying to get the weeds under control, and thicken the grass. Maybe I won’t see much this year. I’ll keep at it. That’s a good idea doing both at the same time.

Worked for me! This stretch was dirt and crap two years ago after the GAS CO dug up the entire stretch in huge chunks.  :angry2:

Looked good last week!

When I moved in I had more bare spots and weeds than grass.  I aerated and de-thatched.   Then I put down a starter fertilizer and some seed.  I did this in mid-May.   Couple more applications of fertilizer that summer.   Kept it damp until the new grass was well started. Mowed it to 2.5 inches.  The next year neighbors were stopping and telling me how good it looked.

Not sure you get enough contact with the soil by putting the seed on top the the existing vegetation.  Maybe in Mid-September you can aerate and then seed again with a quality seed that meets the sun/shade conditions of the area you're working.
