Sports betting bill passes 1st test at Minnesota Legislature

March 7, 2019

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — A bill to legalize sports betting in Minnesota has cleared its first committee test but still faces an uncertain future.

The bill by Senate Tax Committee Chairman Roger Chamberlain passed his panel on a 5-2 vote Thursday. It now goes to the Senate state government committee.

His bill would allow sports betting only at the state’s two horse-racing tracks and all of its tribal casinos, with a provision for wagering via mobile devices linked to the tracks or casinos. The state would collect a 6.75 percent tax on net wagering revenue.

Minnesota’s 11 tribes oppose the bill. John McCarthy of the Minnesota Indian Gaming Association testified that expanding any off-reservation gambling would threaten revenues that tribes need for funding essential services for their members.

No hearing has been scheduled on a similar bill in the Minnesota House.

The two horse tracks are owned by Indians so what are they crying about.  I want completely independent of the Indians type betting.  I have gone to Canterbury a few times and met family or friends there.  Makes for a fun day.  Don't go anymore....

there crying/whining because the state would collect a 6.75% tax the natives wont get.

i sure wish this government would grow a pair and tell these tribes to f#%^&&% pack sand and build a state owned casino, then put in sports betting.

besides this is going to die just like legalizing mary jane just did.
