On KARE11 tonight they ran a story about a lake that has "sinkholes".  These sinkholes are reportedly created by large numbers of carp that swim under the ice surface in a circle.  This action causes the ice to dwindle away from underneath.  The unknowing fisherman drives out on the lake and not noticing anything different about the ice suddenly plunges through the ice.

This isn't a joke-it was on KARE11!  Wed. Feb. 21st. '07
I believe this to be the link to see for yourself!

So my question is-real or fisherman's "story"?  ;D Can fish actually do this?  Personally I'm doubting it-unless the fish had been doing this in the same spot since the ice formed.  What could possibly cause the ice to deteriorate from underneath?  Current alone couldn't-not the current created from fish-at least in my opinion.  What do you think?

Im guessing if it were 10,000 carp. More likely its a spring.

???  seen this before! not carp but cisco,s and whitefish comeing to the surface to feed on fresh water shrimp and other crustations.  they appear when the weather warms and the sun gets to the point in the sky that generates heat through the ice.
this phenom, usually takes place in at least 15 fow and mosyly happens in 25 fow,as carp usually dont frequant deep water at the surface. dark, heavy mud flats that will collect and hold the suns warmth to start the life cycle for the food chain and next to a deep water drop off to circulate the water, witch in turn pulls the new life of the food chain into the deeper water to start the feeding frenzy and the water action to chew away at the ice. :)

Yes, I heard of this happening many years ago.  I have also heard of bullheads doing this also.  I know its hard to believe but it happens.
