Supreme Court will take up Lake Calhoun-Bde Maka Ska dispute

MINNESOTA NEWS, MINNESOTA NEWS FROM THE ASSOCIATED PRESS, TOP STORIES
ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Supreme Court has agreed to decide whether the Department of Natural Resources had the authority to change the name of Lake Calhoun in Minneapolis to its original Dakota name, Bde Maka Ska (buh-DAY’ muh-KAHS’ ka).

The state Court of Appeals ruled in April that the agency overstepped its authority. Because the name had been Lake Calhoun for more than 40 years, the appeals court said, authority to change it rested with the Legislature under statutes governing lake and other place names.

The DNR disagrees with that interpretation of the statutes and says it had the authority to change the name.

Hennepin County asked the DNR for the change because Lake Calhoun was named for pro-slavery former Vice President John Calhoun. But some nearby property owners challenged the change.

I wish Justice Allen Page was still on the court.  He has spoken in regards to the necessity to confront and have discussions about our history of slavery and segregation.  I wonder if he thinks renaming lakes, roads, schools, buildings, towns(?)* is productive in this regard or counterproductive.

If we must erase the name of John Calhoun from the public square, how come no one is calling for the renaming of everything named after presidents Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Jackson, and Van Buren?

I agree, one day it's "if we don't remember out past we may repeat it" and another day it's "wipe out all traces of our past".  Good grief,

Or all the programs and rallies for more diversity in this town, while people line up outside Salvation Army for something to eat or a place to sleep. 60 school-age kids living on the streets, here, reports the local news.
Take care of what's right here FIRST before ya invite more in.
