The one on the left appears to me to be a Drake Hooded Merganzer.  I haven't a clue what the other one is.  I bet Bufflehead will know. :)

Dr. Bob - nice job.
Bufflehead - smokin' .
I had  never even heard of a smew when I got this picture. I'm not sure if the smew is a hen or a drake but I'm betting you're correct Bufflehead. The photo was taken in California - Sonora area. Would a smew ever come through here? Here's another nice shot.

Cool!  Thanks for the Waterfowl ID lesson Doug.

The only other time I have heard the word smew was when I flipped that very large rock over onto my big toe up at Vermilion Trout.  I think I said smew a couple of times as the blood started to seep up thru the top of my tenner shoe. :'(

As an after though - I believe I grumbled "fawkinnae" for weeks from that darn rock!
