From what I'm seeing, the ice should definitely be out by next weekend on all Ely area lakes. Rain is kicking butt, Burntside, White Iron, and Shagawa all turning black, and if anyone is thinking about coming up and opening their cabins, start planning the trip.  No one fishing yet that I know of, but expect that to change with this weather. Water levels have risen a bit with the rain, but no where as high as they should be.

Wow, I forgot how much later the ice goes out up there.  I've been fishing crappie the past 2 weeks.  While I miss the woods and easy commute up there, I don't miss the extended cold!

Fall Lake was declared open as of this afternoon.  An ice field north of Lover's Island was the last hold-out, but a boat could be launched at the Long Branch and beached at the Four Mile.

Time to open up the cabin.

JPR,
Had a tiny setback here last night, 27 degrees, and didn't lose much ice. We need a good wind that will take out all the lakes, unfortunately, not much (2-4 mph)predicted for the next few days. When is the last time Ely didn't have 20mph winds, minimum???
DAMN!!!!!!!!!! ???

Opened up the cabin this past weekend, which of course meant firing up the sauna....  While the lake was ice-free, I must report that even though I took a pretty good leap off the dock - - - - I came out even faster than I went in.  My pitiful howls are still resounding up over Basswood somewhere.
