BRAINERD LAKES AREA ? Brainerd Guide Service, John Blong (218-825-8965) The lakes are in excellent condition in the Brainerd Lakes area. Last weeks' rains brought many of the local lakes up. Anglers shouldn?t have any troubles launching all but the largest boats at most public landings. The crappie fishing continues to be excellent in the Brainerd Lakes. The majority of crappies have been holding in 4 to 6 feet of water, just outside the pencil reeds. Tube jigs, Puddle jumpers, or just a plain minnow have all been good baits. The walleyes opener should be a good one. My guess is that the fish will be in 10 to 14 feet of water on the main lake. The local hotspots, like the bridges on Upper Gull Lake, and Margette Lake, located on the Gull Lake Chain should be good again this year. Key locations are the dished out areas adjacent to the bridges. Just make sure you bring an anchor and get there early. These locations produce some nice fish every year, but they can get crowded. Shore anglers should check out the fishing bridge by Zorba?s on Gull, or the dam just below Gull. Both a excellent early locations. Be safe and have a great opener.
